 Bellingham Bay Marathon

   Bellingham Bay Marathon nears (The Bellingham Herald)
The Bellingham Bay Marathon will take place Sunday September 28 and is partnering with the SSC to take steps in becoming a "green" event. The second annual marathon will include a half-marathon and five kilometer race along with the marathon distance.

The Boulder Backroads Marathon will have about 2,000 participants this weekend. Most of the athletes should be resting up this week as the training and mileage of preparing for the race should have been done in the previous few months. Jeff Mason, race director, will continue the tradition of organizing water stops and fuel stations along the scenic route.

   Lake Orion's Clint Verran returns to run Free Press marathon (Detroit Free Press)
Clint Verran, the fifth place finisher at the 2008 Men's Olympic Trials, will return to race in the Detroit Free Press Marathon where his first of 24 marathons began back in 1998. A physical therapist in Lake Orion, Verran was part of the Hanson's distance project and competed at Eastern Michigan University.

   Equinox Marathon Participation Nears 1,000. (Daily News Miner)
Race Director John Estle says times are changing for the Fairbanks Alaska Equinox Marathon. The marathon race which touted well over 1,000 participants back in the 1960's, now in its 46th year, is climbing back toward the 1,000 registration mark. The race has not seen numbers in the 800's since the late 70's and current registration is already well ahead of last year with just over 800 registered runners for the Sunday race.

   Salwan Marathon on November 16 (Hindustania Times)
The Salwan Marathon began with 300 students and a budget of less than 500 dollars. The 2007 event grew to nearly 27,000 participants and this years race will have over 700 schools registered and will be capped at 28,000. Events for the day will also include a race for the visually impaired.
 
   Marathon Number 456 is completed - only one week after Number 455. (Cotswold Chatterblog)
Steve Edwards finished the Great Langdale Marathon in Cumbria as marathon number 456 on Sunday 14th September 2008. This occured only one week after he ran Marathon Number 455 at Wolverhampton. Edwards quest for the world record continues.

   Kelai-Jufar re-match in Toronto Marathon (IAAF)
John Kelai ran the fastest marathon on Canadian soil last year with his 2 hour 9 minute and 30 second performance. He kicked down the leader, Jufar, for the win. This year promises to be an excellent re-match between the 31-year-old returning champion, Kelai of Kenya, and 24-year-old Tariku Jufar of Ethiopia, The two runners highlight the strongest-ever men’s field announced for the 9th edition of the for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon to be run on September 28. The race is an IAAF Silver Label Road Race.
 
   'Marathon Mania' is coming: Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon to support over 60 local charities (CNW Group)
John Doig, Senior V.P. for marketing, is expecting the Toronto Waterfront Marathon to raise well over the $920,000 for over 60 charities that last years race turned over. The marathon, half-marathon and 5K help to support a healthy lifestyle for people across the country of Canada and around the world with over 13,000 participants and earning the IAAF Silver Label along with New York, Chicago and Boston.
 
 Yonkers Marathon

   83rd Yonkers Marathon off to new start. (The Journal News)
The second oldest marathon in the world, the Yonkers Marathon, will move it's starting line to Riverfront Street by the library due to overcrowding at the old starting line by the pier. Over 350 people from around the world are expected to attend the marathon and half marathon that will showcase the city of Yonkers.

   World-leading 30:57 10km by Mikitenko in Karlsruhe, Berlin Marathon next (IAAF)
Irina Mikitenko ran 30 minutes and 57 seconds at the German 10 Km Road Race Championships in Karlsruhe on Saturday the 13. She placed second in her debut marathon at Berlin with a time of 2 hours 24 minutes and 51 seconds and will return on September 28 to race in the Berlin Marathon.
 
 Florida Marathon & 1/2 Marathon

   New Melbourne and Beaches Music Marathon up and running (Florida Today)
Mitch Varnes has created the second largest North American surf contest from the Sebastian Inlet Pro Surfing Competition. He hopes to take his passion for surfing and create a runaway event with the Melbourne and Beaches Music Marathon to be held on February 9th.

   Five-and-a-half marathons - in six days! (Suffolk and Essex)
Richard Merry, from Colchester, hopes to raise £15,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity by running five and a half marathons inside of 6 days while traversing the Sahara Desert next March.
 
 Maui Marathon

   Marathon director happy with outcome of Maui Marathon (The Maui News)
Despite a lack of prize money and the slowing economy, Bill Burke was satisfied with the overall outcome of the Maui marathon. Even though the four time marathon winner did not show up, the competition was still strong. Over 2,000 runners competed in the marathon, half-marthon and 5K events.

 Erie Marathon at Presque Isle

   Winners Go the Distance at Erie Marathon (Go Erie)
With 1,100 runners from Canada and 34 states cramming the line on Presque Isle State Park in Erie, Pennsylvania it seemed impossible that a local would sneak in for the win. But Andy Holland of Fairview would win the title by nearly 2 minutes in 2 hours 41 minutes and 57 seconds.
 
 Maui Marathon

   Runners from Japan capture Maui Marathon titles (Honululu Advertiser)
Junichi Kawabata won the Maui Marathon with a runaway time of 2 hours, 36 minutes and 24 seconds. Rounding out the men's field was Clement Simon of France, 2 hours 50 minutes and 5 seconds, and Yoshiaki Mikami of Japan in 2 hours, 52 minutes and 47 seconds for second and third respectively. Youko Yamazawa, Japan, ran away from the field yesterday to capture the women's 38th Maui Marathon in 3 hours, 9 minutes and 40 seconds. She was followed by Sharon Moran of Ho-nolulu in 3 hours, 25 minutes, 37 seconds. Chiharu Mikami of Japan was third in 3 hours 36 minutes and 9 seconds.

   Thugs raid Olympic Marathon champion's home (Daily Nation)
It was reported that 10 heavily armed men raided the home of Samuel Kamau Wanjiru at Muthaiga Estate in Nyahururu Town on Friday night. The North District Commissioner denied the claims and stated that the gunshots heard were merely to drive off a herd of elephants.

   Pumlani wins Robin Hood marathon for third time (This is Nottingham)
PUMLANI Bangani,34, who was running for the Salford Harriers won the Robin Hood Marathon for the third time in the last 4 years with a time of 2 hours 25 minutes and 27 seconds. Rotherham Harriers runner Debbie Mason, 40, was the female marathon champion with a time of two hours, 53 minutes and 15 seconds despite having knee surgery less than two years ago.

   Runner dies at Nottingham's Robin Hood marathon (This is Nottingham)
Race Director Chris Sumner sent his condolences to the family of a man who died shortly after crossing the half-marathon mark around 12 noon in Nottingham. Sumner stated that this was the third person to die at the race in the last 9 years.
 
 Rochester Marathon
  Post-Race Review/ Results
   Thousands finish Rochester Marathon, despite searing heat (Democrat and Chronicle)
Despite searing heat and the worst conditions event organizers had seen in years 23-year-old David Rappleyea of Henrietta won the Rochester Marathon in 2 hours, 37 minutes and 39 seconds. Jill Skivington, 28, of Rochester was the first woman to finish just missing the 3 hour barrier by 3 seconds. Race officials were forced to shut the race down near the 20 mile mark around noon as hospitals said they were over loaded.

   Auckland Marathon tickets running out the door… to TradeMe (National Business Review)
Auckland Marathon hopefuls desperate to get an entry into the race have been turning to an online trading site to purchase entries, some worth up to three times their value on TradeMe. A handful of auctions saw bids for half-marathon entries at $110-153 and a full marathon ticket is up to to $400 having started at $100. The original tickets cost $106 for the full marathon and $89 for the half and late entry fees were $151 but tickets were sold out even before the first early entry fee deadline.

Over thirty foreign participants have confirmed to participate in the Ninth Colombo Marathon. Many hope the marathon will be an opportunity to encourage more tourists to visit the country. This event is supported my the Ministry of Sports along with the Athletic Association, Sri Lanka Tourism, SriLankan Airlines, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth Affairs, Negombo Hoteliers Association and several other private sector entrepreneurs.

   Cowtown Marathon Runners now can toss in their chips (Dallas News)
The new ChronoTrack chip which is waterproof, disposable and attached to he runner's bibs will become more frequently used at races in Texas. Raul Najera's Austin-based Run Far timing system has tested ChronoTrack since July. The commonly used ChampionChip can be a hassle for race organizers to distribute and collect.
 
 Houston Marathon

   Houston Marathon kickoff party to showcase charity program (Galveston Daily News)
The Houston Marathon's September kickoff party will be more than a pre-race party. The party will be a showcase the Run for a Reason program, in which participants in the Chevron Houston Marathon and the Aramco Houston Half Marathon raise money for a number of local charities. Also new at the kickoff, will be the absence of a registration table where runners can sign up for the January marathon or half marathon since the race reached its combined capacity during the summer, and the waiting list is almost full.

Becky Vanderhoff who weighted 250 pounds fifteen years ago will celebrate a dramatic metamorphosis by running the 2008 Rochester Marathon in singlet and shorts, as trim and fit as the hundreds of others who'll be racing alongside her. What began with short walks, a Weight Watchers regimen and a new treadmill, Vanderhoff discovered a love of running. She'll weigh about 140 on race morning.

   Montreal marathon back on the map: founder (The Gazette)
Over 17,000 participants are expected at the 2008 Marathon Oasis de Montreal in events such as the marathon, half-marathon, 10k run, 40k cycling course, 10k wheelchair circuit, 5k student challenge and a 1k race for children. 9,500 people have signed up for the full marathon, many of them international elite runners. Defending champion of the women's race Wioletta Kryza, the fastest woman in Montreal in 2006 and 2007, ran a 2:43.25 in last year's edition of the race.

 Air Force Marathon

   Special Forces soldier not your average US Air Force marathoner (Air Force link)
Captain Ivan Castro will compete in the 12th annual U.S. Air Force Marathon at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio; but he won't compete in a special category. Castro, who served with the U.S. Army Special Operations Command's elite Special Forces, survived a mortar attack in Iraq in 2006 having sustained a damaged arm, shoulder, neck, heart, nose, cheek, finger, buttocks, back, legs, lungs and nerves were mending, along with the aneurism, multiple abrasions and contusions and the loss of sight in both his eyes. While recovering from injuries, he listened to doctors and nurses around him discussing their experiences at the Marine Corps Marathon. Castro is now the only blind officer to serve in USASOC Special Forces and has run the Army Ten Miler, Bataan Memorial Death March Marathon and the Boston Marathon.

   Springfield runner has marathon goals for Bay State Marathon (Mass Live)
At twenty-four Joe Hegarty has big goals for his first attempt at the marathon distance. Aiming for a 2:30-2:35 finish at the Bay State Marathon, if things go well, his long-range goal of running in the 2012 Olympic Trials could be a possibility. Bay State Marathon will take place in Lowell, Massachusetts on Oct. 19.
 
 Berlin Marathon

   Gebrselassie hopes to break world record at Berlin Marathon (International Herald Tribune)
Haile Gebrselassie is confident to break the world record again when he runs the Berlin Marathon. He ran a 2:04:26 on Berlin's relatively flat course in 2007 to take the world record title from Paul Tergat who set the previous mark of 2:05:55 in 2003.

   Ndereba training for Philadelphia Distance Run (Philly.com)
Two-time Olympic silver medalist Catherine Ndereba will headline the field of elite athletes at the Philadelphia Distance Run. Ndereba who trains in Philadelphia has won the event five times and is also a two-time winner of the Broad Street Run. Ndereba's impressive career includes being the first four-time women's winner at the Boston Marathon, two victories at the Chicago Marathon and runner-up finishes in the London and New York City marathons.
 
 Rochester Marathon

   Rochester Marathon expects big numbers (Democrat and Chronicle)
The Preferred Care Rochester Marathon returns for the fourth staging of the event with over one thousand registered for the half marathon, more than five hundred for the marathon and eighty-two relay teams (with three or four individuals). Race director Greg Brooks is making final preparations for the large crowds.
