   Student dies on Chennai marathon run (The Times of India)
The "Give Life" Chennai marathon ended in tragedy Sunday with the death of a 22-year-old Anna University student, who collapsed in the final leg. M Santosh, a native of Kochapalli village near Pakkam-Agaram in Krishnagiri district was struggling just prior to the finish and collapsed and died apparently due to cardiac arrest. The heat and sun that came out later in the race were cited as factors in his death.

   Marathon Kids Look Forward to LA Kick Off (Happy News)
Marathon kids will kick off on Saturday, October 11. Each participant will begin running 26.2 miles in one quarter mile to one half mile increments all while committing to eating 26.2 days per month of 5 fruits and vegetables until the City of Los Angeles marathon kicks off. 13,518 registered Los Angeles Marathon Kids achieved an 85% completion rate last year. This year 17,000 are expected to participate.

Philadelphia-based health service company, CIGNA, will be the presenting sponsor of the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend for both 2009 and 2010. The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, which attracts more than 80,000 participants and spectators from all over the world, is one of the largest events held in Central Florida. CIGNA believes this will be a way to encourage thousands to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Chris Ponteri stated that his indoor marathon of 95 laps around the Petit Center has received 40 registrations. Ponteri over estimated his guess for a full race of 100 registrations in 2 hours. He cited cold weather as a reason for the low registration turn out.

Fiona Russell is training for the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon on October 5th and she is taking a lesson from Olympians. After watching the Olympic marathon Russell has found the secret to avoiding a Radcliffe-esque race from hell. She will employ massage therapists, physiotherapy, and podiatry to avoid a painful short fall to her marathon.

Beth Ostrosky says her first priority these days is training for the New York City Marathon in November. Her wedding to radio shock jock Howard Stern is something she isn't really thinking about. She has put in distances of 10 and 18 miles for her training.
 
   Goucher commits to 10-Mile Championship (Duluth News Tribune)
5,000 and 10,000 meter Olympian, Kara Goucher, will compete in the 10-Mile Road Race Championship from Minneapolis to St. Paul. The event is slated for 0ctober 5th and will be Goucher's first road race committment leading up to her Marathon debut in New York City.

   Time flies for 26.2 miles in Lehigh Valley (The Morning Call)
Rob Weidman who lost his GPS training watch mid-race, went on to win the Lehigh Valley Hospital Marathon in a personal best of 2:49:37. Carol Jefferson who took a wrong turn around the twenty-two mile mark won the women's race in 2:59:28. The Lehigh Valley Hospital Marathon is a fundraiser for Via, the Bethlehem nonprofit agency for disabled people.

   Millot at his best to secure Moray crown (The Press and Journal)
NIKU Millot set a personal best time of 2 hours 43minutes and 11seconds to win the Moray Marathon ahead of 150 runners at Elgin yesterday. The Metro Aberdeen athlete has been running for two years and completed his 7th marathon in style with his win. The women's winner was Kate Jenkins who won the women's title for the tenth time in twelve years. This was her second quickest she has recorded over that period of 3 hours 2 minutes and 6 seconds.

   Couple uses marathoning as a bonding experience at Queen City Marathon (Canada.com)
Fifty-three year old Helen Fehr finished the Queen City Marathon in 3:59:27; but missing as she crossed the finish line was husband, Randy Duncan, who was sidelined with an injury. Fehr and Duncan began running in 2005 through a work-sponsored 10k program and progressed into marathons thereafter. Before they continue their international marathon tour, Fehr and Duncan will make a stop in Boston which Fehr has qualified for.

   Runners smash records at Queen City Marathon (Canada.com)
Defending Champion Amanda Froehlich set a Queen City Marathon record winning the women's race in 3:02.51 in her third marathon. Robert Ritchot set a course record with a winning time of 2:42:12. Brendan Lunty was second in 2:43:32 and Clyde Van Caeyzeele finished third in 2:43:38.
 
 Wolverhampton City Marathon

   2,000 strong undertake Wolverhampton Marathon (Express and Star)
Wolverhampton Marathon saw around two thousand cyclists and runners on event day. This was the tenth staging of the event. Events included a full marathon, half marathon, half marathon relay, half marathon wheelchair, cycle race, and children’s mini marathon.

 Fox Cities Marathon

   Volunteers essential to annual Fox Cities Marathon's success (Post Crescent)
Over 6,500 runners will start on the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley campus in Menasha, Wisconsin on September 21 for the Community First Fox Cities Marathon. But with just under two weeks left there are still 100 volunteer spots that need to be filled. Three hundred and fifty spots were available at the start of registration. Organizers are scrambling to find the assistance needed to support the race.

   Ready, Set, Go Green! Hartford Marathon Has Joined The Race To Save The Earth From Trash (Courant)
The October 11th ING Hartford Marathon is going green and making strides in a yearly progressing. This year the goody bags are being replaced with re-usable drawstring bags to keep 10,000 plastic bags out of landfills. A water bubbler will be used again this year to provide water at the finish line for runners.

   Race to Enter Icebreaker Indoor Marathon Starts Monday Morning (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)
There are only 100 spots for the Icebreaker Indoor Marathon in Milwaukee to be held at the Pettit Ice Center. The 94 or 95 lap race will cost participants 75 dollars and is expected to fill in two hours when registration opens on Monday morning at 10:30 am.

The scope of the Lehigh Valley Marathon is growing year after year. Well over 2000 runners and volunteers supported the marathon with higher hopes for the 2009 event. Race participants doubled from the 2007 race as participants of all abilities accepted the 26.2 mile challenge.

The 2008 Lehigh Valley Hospital Marathon will be seeing its second year. Approximately 253 of those 1,150 will run the full marathon and 20-mile race, and more than 900 others will participate in the Relay Team race, in which each five-person team will run between 4.5 and 6.5 miles. Last year, the race made more than $30,000 for a program for people with disabilities.

With her marathon debut now slated for the November 2 New York City Marathon Kara Goucher will step into the marathon limelight. Goucher's career was headed in the 26.2-mile direction last fall when she crushed a 1 hour 6 minutes and 57 second half to win the Great North Run in England all the while defeating Paula Radcliffe. Had the course be record eligible her time would have eclipsed the American record held by Deena Kastor by over 30 seconds.

   Wanjiru turns pro (Daily Yomiuri Online)
The 21 year old Kenyan runner who electrified audiences at the Beijing Olympics by winning Kenya's first Olympic Gold Medal in the marathon has started a competitive professional running team of Kenyans with Japanese coaches. Wanjiru told reporters that he will go for Gebrselassie marathon world record and defend his marathon title the 2012 London Olympic Games.

   Marathon man Miles feted in Cape Breton (The Chronicle Herals of Nova Scotia)
Legendary Johnny Miles was honored with a bronze statue and in speeches from government representatives, family members, the author of Nova Scotia’s Marathon King and the artist who carved his likeness before the statue was unveiled in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. Johnny, who credited his success to clean living and God-given ability, trained on his own in the streets of Florence and Sydney Mines and shocked the running world when he won two Boston Marathons, in 1926 and 1929.

The fourth annual Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay is set for September 21 and race organizers are offering 100,000 dollars to the first 5 person team that can eclipse the 2 hour marathon mark. The 5 person relay would have to average 4 minutes and 35 seconds per mile to run the sub 2 hour marathon.

   Creek wins Adelaide marathon (Borderwatch.com)
Former Mount Gambier A Grade cricketer Justin Creek won the prestigious South Australian Road Runners Club marathon in 2:44:29. Last year he competed in the Canberra marathon, finishing that event in 2:37:00. Adelaide Marathon had 253 finishers.

   Mizuki Noguchi's Chances for Berlin World Championships still Unclear (Japan Running News)
Athens Olympics women's marathon gold medalist Mizuki Noguchi, who had withdrawn from the 2008 Beijing Games and her planned participation in the October 12 World Half Marathon Championships in Rio de Janiero due to an injury earlier this summer, has slowly started training again. Noguchi injured her biceps femoris and semitendinosus on July 25 while training in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Noguchi's only realistic chance to qualify for the 2009 World Championships will be at March's Nagoya International Women's Marathon, but many remain uncertain if she can regain her old levels of fitness.
 
   Olympic marathon champ Wanjiru sets sights on world record (France24.com)
Beijing Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru of Kenya promised to go for a world record in the Berlin Marathon next year and retain his title at the 2012 London Games. Current World Record Holder Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie set a world record of 2:04:26 at the 2007 Berlin Marathon; but skipped last month's Beijing Olympic marathon citing health concerns over air pollution in the Chinese capital. Twenty-one year old Wanjiru who lives in Japan is the first gold medal winner for Kenya.

   Jungfrau Marathon Steeped in scenery (Financial Times)
The 16th Jungfrau marathon takes place on Saturday, starting from Interlaken in Switzerland’s stunning Bernese Oberland. Defending champions of the men and women's races Jonathan Wyatt and Anita Hakenstad Evertsen will be back to take on the marathon course which ascends 1,829 meters with a gradients of 30 percent. Wyatt completed last year's race in 2:55:32 and Evertson finished in 3:23:05.
 
 Lake Tahoe Marathon

   Marathon Man to Bear up Unilever (This Is Money)
With the departure of chief executive Patrick Cescau, Unilever has appointed a marathon runner Paul Polman to take control of the consumer goods giant. Polman, the first ever outsider to lead the staid and bureaucratic Anglo-Dutch firm, is set to keep executives on their toes having developed a habit of team-building by inviting junior managers to join him on his morning runs.

   Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon launched (Kenyan Broadcasting Company)
Standard Chartered Nairobi International Marathon will be hosting its sixth event on October 26, 2008. The race events include a full marathon for men and women, a half marathon, 10km race, 5 km family fun race and a wheelchair race. The event brings in around one million dollars for the community.
