CITY OF AKRON LANDMARKS TO HOST NEWEST
PIECE OF MARATHON HISTORY
Road Runner Akron Marathon announces Brouse Cup tour
AKRON, Ohio (June 29, 2007) – Images of the Stanley Cup and the Wimbledon
Trophy hoisted above the heads of their winners were in the minds of race
officials when they collaborated with law firm Brouse McDowell to create
the Road Runner Akron Marathon's new winners' trophy, the Brouse Cup.
The Road Runner Akron Marathon, which will hold its fifth annual race on
Saturday, September 29, has designed a large sterling silver trophy to be
engraved with the names of each year's winners in the men's and women's
open and men's and women's masters divisions. The cup is 18 and a half
inches high and weighs approximately 20 pounds. Each of the four winners
will be given a replica of the Brouse Cup to keep.
The Brouse Cup, a gift by Brouse McDowell, will be showcased throughout the
community beginning in early July at the facilities of sponsors and city
landmarks that fall on the 26.2 mile marathon course. Confirmed tour stops
include: The National Inventors Hall of Fame, City Hall, Akron Beacon
Journal, WAKR/WONE/WQMX, Brouse McDowell, Crowne Plaza, John S. Knight
Center and Canal Park.
While Brouse McDowell and the Road Runner Akron Marathon are hoping that
this new trophy will gain notoriety in the running community, the main goal
is to provide a tangible piece of the marathon that can be shared
throughout the Akron community.
"The Road Runner Akron Marathon has become an important and beloved piece
of Akron's culture in the past five years," said Dave Hunter, an attorney
at Brouse McDowell and the marathon course co-chair. "The new Brouse Cup
not only makes a great trophy, it allows other organizations in the City of
Akron that play a part in the race to share a part of the marathon with the
community year-round."
Hunter, who's been dedicated to the marathon since its beginning five years
ago, was the catalyst behind the new piece of Road Runner Akron Marathon
hardware. "We want Akronites to be proud when they see the Brouse Cup
around the city."
The new Brouse Cup will be presented to marathon winners for the first time
on Saturday, September 29 at the awards ceremony in Canal Park Stadium.
The fifth anniversary race also features a new half marathon course, free
Brooks running shoes for all marathon finishers, and a community party on
race day.
The Road Runner Akron Marathon is organized by the Akron Marathon
Charitable Corporation, a nonprofit group that is dedicated to promoting
health and fitness. Additional information on the Road Runner Akron
Marathon, Half Marathon and Chase Team Relays is available at www.akronmarathon.org or by calling (330) 375-2786 (2RUN).
