National Black Marathoners' Association Announces Goals
Imagine if you will, hundreds of African-Americans from around the nation
- Converging at a different marathon each year,
- Wearing the same color jersey,
- Offering encouragement and support to one another, and
- Providing a scholarship to deserving high school distance runners.
The National Black Marathoners' Association (NBMA) is a not-for-profit
organization. It is open to everyone, regardless of their athletic ability
or previous marathon experience. Our objectives are to
- Encourage African-Americans and others to pursue a healthy life-style
through long distance running and walking.
- Serve as a vehicle for African-American distance runners across the
nation to meet in mass at a single marathon.
- Provide scholarships to deserving African-American high school boy and
girl distance runners.
Here's how we hope to make these simple dreams into reality
1. Individuals will either (a) provide their email address and/or (b)
periodically re-visit this website. The email address will not be shared
with any other organization.
2. Once a year, a "multi-race" marathon will be identified for the members
to meet and run. A multi-race marathon is a marathon that also includes a
variety of other races, such as a 10K, half marathon, or marathon-relay.
This allows runners of various abilities to participate.
3. The race will be identified at least six months prior to the start. This
allows people to plan and train for their event.
4. Everyone will be asked to wear a specific colored tank-top or jersey. If
the person happens to already own that color jersey, then there's nothing
to buy. If the person doesn't already own that color, then they may
purchase it from their local merchant. (Note: There's nothing to order or
buy through the NBMA.)
5. This website will be updated with the "multi-race" marathon event and
jersey color. If the individual provided their email address, they'll be
sent a message from with the event and color.
6. The person registers for the race and makes their normal travel plans.
(Note: The NBMA does not receive any funds from the race organization. We
simply identify the race.)
That's it!!! If you notice, during this process, the NBMA receives NO FUNDS
from you to participate. However, you'll know that you were a part of an
annual, unique experience. Hopefully, from this experience, you'll be able
to meet and offer encouragement to other Black marathoners, and perhaps,
make a life long friend. Also, you may help to send an student to college
along the way by making a tax-deductible contribution.
