ADAMLE TO ANCHOR 2006 LASALLE BANK CHICAGO MARATHON
BROADCAST ON SPORTSRADIO 670, THE SCORE
CHICAGO (September 13, 2006) - WSCR-AM Sportsradio 670, The Score today
announced veteran sports radio and television broadcaster Mike Adamle will
anchor the 2006 broadcast of The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. Adamle will
be joined in the booth by former Olympic marathoners Linda Somers-Smith and
Mark Coogan. Live coverage of the 29th annual Race will air exclusively on
The Score on Sunday, Oct. 22 from 7 to 11 a.m.
In advance of the Oct. 22 Race, Adamle will co-host four hour-long programs
with The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon Executive Race Director Carey
Pinkowski. The shows will air on the four consecutive Saturdays leading up
to the race - Sept. 23, Sept. 30, Oct. 7 and Oct. 14 - from 7 to 8 a.m. and
will feature training tips, interviews and developing news regarding the
Race.
"Mike is not only one of the best sports broadcasters in Chicago, but first
and foremost, an athlete who understands a marathon from perspectives
ranging from the elite runners to first-time competitors," remarked Sports
Radio 670, The Score Programming Director Mitch Rosen. "With Mike as the
anchor of this team, the broadcast is sure to captivate our listeners by
allowing them to experience the excitement and emotion that characterizes
The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon."
A 30-year veteran in the sports broadcasting industry, Adamle currently
serves as a fill-in host for The Score and a fill-in anchor for NBC5. He
also provides regular Chicago Bears insight for Comcast SportsNet. A former
NFL player and Northwestern University football standout, Adamle has been
employed by all three major television networks in Chicago during his
career.
Adamle will be joined by Somers-Smith, an accomplished marathoner who
qualified for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team with a personal record and
second-place finish (2:30:06) at the Olympic Trials. The 1992 champion of
The LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon (2:37:41) and 1993 runner-up (2:34:25),
will bring an intimate knowledge of the Chicago course to the broadcast and
offer insight to the elite race in particular.
"Linda not only adds a vast, personal knowledge of the marathon and the
Chicago event in particular, but that keen ability to relay the elite
action to The Score's listeners," said Pinkowski. "Because she continues to
compete in the Masters division, Linda is on top of developments in the
sport and how athletes are training, competing and strategizing today."
Coogan, 40, participated in the 1996 Olympic Marathon in Atlanta to
culminate a two-decade career in distance running. A seven-time member of
the U.S. World Cross Country Team, Coogan won the silver medal in the
marathon at the 1995 Pan Am Games before qualifying for the Olympic team in
February, 1996.
"Listeners will recognize Mark as he has broadcast our race before and done
a tremendous job. He has competed here as well as in New York and Boston so
his first-hand knowledge and ability to compare what the athletes are
seeing in Chicago to similar races will offer a unique and valuable
perspective," said Pinkowski.
The 2006 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon will feature 40,000 runners from
around the globe including a field of elite athletes competing for a
portion of $650,000, the highest prize purse currently available in the
sport. The Race will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22. Also associated
with the Marathon is a two-day Health & Fitness Expo featuring more than
150 exhibitors that will take place on Friday, Oct. 20 and Saturday, Oct.
21 at McCormick Place. The Health & Fitness Expo is free and open to the
public.
