WACKY WATER STATION CONTEST INJECTS FUN
AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN MARATHON OF THE PALM BEACHES
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (August 17, 2004) ¾ Being an inaugural race isn’t
hindering the Marathon of the Palm Beaches, presented by Pontiac-GMC, from
quickly distinguishing itself from any other. As part of a long line of
“firsts” the marathon is now offering the local community a chance to get
involved without having to lace up their running shoes.
In an effort to involve local communities and nonprofit organizations in
this historic event, the Marathon of the Palm Beaches is introducing the
Wacky Water Station contest, co-chaired by John and Greg Rice. Groups,
clubs, nonprofits and neighborhood associations are encouraged to submit an
entry form with a description and proposed theme for their water station.
Twenty-seven groups or organizations will be selected to line the 26.2 mile
course and provide refreshment to the runners.
“Our original goal for the Marathon of the Palm Beaches was to create an
event that offered opportunities for the entire community,” said Iva Grady,
its marketing director. “The Wacky Water Station contest will provide
individuals and organizations in the local community the ability to
participate in a fun, friendly competition, while adding more of the kind
of creative energy that is fast becoming the hallmark of this race.”
Invited to develop, design and man one of the Wacky Water Stations along
the marathon course, each group is asked to develop a theme incorporating
decorations, costumes, music, energized volunteers and any other “wacky”
ideas. The concept is to create a water station that is fun, entertaining
and memorable for the thousands of runners who will pass by on their
journey to the finish line. Each station will be judged by a committee
which will also interview runners on their favorites. Prize money will be
awarded to the top two water stations that exhibit the most creative and
inspired idea, offering $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place.
“For runners, there’s nothing more encouraging and motivating than to be
cheered along the course as you run,” said Ron Kramer, operations director
for the Marathon of the Palm Beaches. “The Wacky Water Stations are a way
to give them something to look forward to at each mile marker.”
The inaugural Marathon of the Palm Beaches, presented by Pontiac-GMC, will
be held on Nov.14, 2004 from 6:00 a.m. to noon. The event takes place over
a three-day weekend packed with race-related activities, including the
CityPlace Celebrity Mile hosted by Mayor Lois Frankel on Sat., Nov. 13 and
a two-day Sports and Fitness Expo on Friday and Sat., Nov. 12 - 13. The
event is co-sponsored by WRMF 97.9 fm, ESPN Radio 760 AM, WIRK 107.9 FM,
