HARVARD STUDENT WINS RAFFLE TO COMPETE IN MARATHON OF THE PALM BEACHES
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (May 12, 2004)--- There is a new addition
to the roster of runners for the Marathon of the Palm Beaches. Sarah
Mercer of Cambridge, Mass., was the winner of the Marathon of the Palm
Beaches’ “Come for the Run, Stay for the Sun” raffle held during the Sports
and Fitness Expo at the Boston Marathon in April. She was awarded two
roundtrip airline tickets to West Palm Beach on American Airlines; a
three-day, two-night stay at the Marriott West Palm Beach; an elegant
dinner cruise for two on the Palm Beach Princess; and two complimentary
race registrations for the Marathon of the Palm Beaches.
“I am so excited to be a part of this inaugural race, and to
run my fourth marathon on such a beautiful course,” Mercer said. “This is
the ideal qualifying course for next year’s Boston Marathon. With quality
training, a flat course and good weather, my goal is to finish under 3:20.”
The raffle was implemented by Marathon of the Palm Beaches race
organizers as a way to promote the race to the over 20,000 national and
international runners competing in Boston. Mercer was randomly selected
from over 1,000 entries collected.
Mercer, a 22-year old from Littleton, Col., is currently a
senior at Harvard University where she has been nominated for Harvard’s
first Intramural Athlete of the Year award. After graduating on June 10,
she will enroll at the University of Colorado-Boulder Law School. The 2004
Boston Marathon was her third marathon, which she completed in 3:36 despite
the extreme temperatures.
The inaugural Marathon of the Palm Beaches, to be held Nov.14, 2004, is
presented by the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches. The event takes
place over a three-day weekend packed with race-related activities,
including the CityPlace Celebrity Mile and a two-day sports and fitness
expo.
The event is co-sponsored by Marriott West Palm Beach, the Palm Beach
County Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, WPBF Channel 25, The Palm Beach Post,
the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, Carey O’Donnell PR Group,
Wilesmith Advertising & Design, the City of West Palm Beach, Wachovia Bank,
Jacuzzi Brands, the Palm Beach Princess, the Port of Palm Beach and Trump
Ice.
