A Great Race in A Capitol Place: The Mad City Marathon
Olympic Medallist Frank Shorter To Be Featured Speaker

Madison, Wis.– A couple of cookies here; a glass of milk there, and before
you know it, that’s 300 extra calories per visit. It’s easy to see why
Santa’s beyond pleasantly plump. Santa could burn nearly 600 calories with
a 30-minute daily run, at a leisurely 12 minute-per-mile pace. That’s
perfect base training in preparation for the 2004 Mad City Marathon, A
Great Race in a Capitol Place.

On Sunday, May 30, join two-time Olympic medallist Frank Shorter and
thousands of runners at the 2004 Mad City Marathon. Shorter, who earned
Olympic gold in 1972 and silver in 1976, will conduct workshops at the
Health and Fitness Fair and be the featured speaker at the Pasta Dinner on
Saturday, May 29, organizers announced today.

"I have always wanted to visit Madison and, believe it or not, have never
had the opportunity until now," Shorter said, "The University of Wisconsin
has enjoyed such a great reputation for success in the distance running
events, I want to see for myself why this is so." Shorter also wants to
confirm the oft-quoted similarity between Madison and Boulder, Colorado,
his residence.

The race, in its 9th consecutive running, will begin at the capital square
and finish in Olin Turville Park. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., The Capital
Brewery Finish Line Festival will celebrate the accomplishments of the
anticipated 5,000 runners.

New to this years event is the addition of The Capital Times as the
presenting newspaper sponsor. This sponsorship includes the marathon, half
marathon, marathon relay and 5K/10K. Unity Insurance will present the Fit
for Life Kids Run, a fun run around the capitol square for children 12 and
younger. Other sponsors include Mosaic Funds, Clear Channel Communications,
Charter Communications, UW Sports Medicine and Midwest Airlines.

"There will be plenty of surprises along the course to keep our runners
pumped," said Ken Woodford, race co-chair, "We’re hoping for further
community involvement, Mad City ROCKS – Runners On Course with Krazy
Supporters, will bring neighbors, friends and family out onto the 26.2
miles of the route" "The Mad City Marathon has earned rave reviews from
experienced runners because of participant support. This initiative will be
an added bonus for the rookie runner." Woodford said.

The Mad City Marathon, A Great Race in a Capitol Place is a partner in the
Fit City initiative. Mayor Dave Cieslewicz will be the official starter of
the marathon. For further race details, registration and volunteer
participation please visit www.madcitymarathon.com.
