COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 In my opinion this is one of the most breathtaking courses I have run. I shed a tear more than once so overcome by the grandiose vistas. I very much enjoyed the rolling terrain. Praise for the volunteers and thank you for the cola at each stop and finish. Oranges at most water stops also. The photographers were fun. Smiling with pleasure to capture our antics. Nice race finish up the hill with turns. I loved the hills. I will be back next year.

"Best marathon location" (about: 2012)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I've run in several marathons and I under trained for this one and paid the price at mile 17. But the staff was phenomenal guiding me in and cheering me on. Dora with the medical staff, made sure I was o.k. at the end of the race. This race location was the best I've ever seen, and the staff was awesome. Best marathon ever, even though it was my slowest time, what a great location.

"good aide stations, bad shirt" (about: 2012)

| 1 Lake Placid Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I think the double out and back course makes it more entertaining for the marathon because it is not lonely. But there are many times you can be running against slower half marathoners and lots of Team In Training people. There more aide stations than most races and they are well stocked. Again this race seems to cater to slower TNT people which makes it a good first half marathon. It can be hot and a lot of the course is in the sun and there are some hills, so you need to be prepared for those conditions. The tech tee was a disappointment, it was a cheap scratchy dark blue. Now it is common to have a women's shirt, these were all unisex. For the price of this race a better shirt would be nice. The post race has good food and a good feel. It is a short walk to the lake for a cooling dip.

"Nice Marathon; great location" (about: 2012)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Lake Placid Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I chose this race because my family often visits Lake Placid and I was familiar with most of the route. The course is billed as challenging, which it was, but not overly so, save for the hill at the end. This year's race was on a warm day (probably in low to mid 70's and lots of sun), and I feel that had it not been for the heat I would have been able to run close to my PR time on the course. The expo the day before the race was very low key, and was able to pick up my number and packet very quickly. Same for the starting area the morning of the race. None of the crowds and lines at the port-a-johns or baggage check in that I have experienced in larger Marathons like NYC or Boston. It actually felt more like a local 5k, which was fine with me. The aid stations were frequent and well supplied. I really appreciated the cups of ice at some of the later stops! The post-race set up was also very nice, plenty of food and drink and places to rest. I also liked that my family was able to be right at the finish line for me - my kids were able to run the lap on the oval with me. My only real complaint (which I have seen in earlier reviews) was the use of plastic cups. They are very hard to drink from while running, and it is not fun to have Gatorade splashed on your face! I also was not crazy about the turnaround point for the beginning of the 2nd loop for Marathon. There was only 1 lane of road open for runners, and I felt there was not enough room for running heading in both directions. Overall I would recommend this race for the scenary and nice friendly feel it had! I hope to do it again!

"Hope all of my future half marathons compare." (about: 2011)
2 previous marathons
| 2 Lake Placid Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This was the 2nd time I ran this half-marathon. I loved it! I have only run 2 half marathons ever, both being in Lake Placid. Being new to races, how does this compare to other raceseasier, harder? I am afraid to try other ones because I am not sure if I am ready for other races. I ran this one with little difficulty. I am interested to know what more seasoned racers think. If I was ever to do a whole marathon, what would be a good one for my first one?

"Lake Placid: Athlete's Paradise, Do the Half" (about: 2011)
11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 My 49th Marathon.first time in Lake Placid..Don't know why it took me so long to get up there.as the Lake and environs is just spectacular, the scenery, olympic sites , sense of history and the number of various athletes in general is so cool. Pros: 1. Well organized, beautiful, challenging course which begins and ends in the Olympic Skating Oval. 2. Lake Placid Village is replete with good restaurants and shops. 3. Staying in town makes it possible to walk to and from the race. Nice places to stay. 4. Professionally executed with a small town, intimate feel. 5. Cool to run past olympic venues and in equestrian. site. 6. Lots of water, snacks and gatorade on the course. 7. Great volunteers who stuck it out through some down pours. 8. Lots of variety in food at finish. Room for Improvements: 1. OMG plastic cups!!! Let's get greener! Not great for runners either. 2. Consider changing marathon course from a double up and back...too boring..with all that scenery I m sure something else can be arranged. Would never do the full again.Focus was on half I think the medals were the same. 3. No obvious medical tents..thank God very few people needed one..but at least hand out some vaseline. 4. No real expo..good to expand at least a little especially in the land of Olympics. Merchandise was so so. Official shirt : average and same shirt for full and half. Made me come back at 8pm to change shirt even though there were tons of extras. Bottom Line: great for a destination half with family. Take the boat tour of Lake Placid, visit the olympic sites and enjoy beautiful scenery, nice people and a lovely town.

"Scenic and Challenging" (about: 2011)

| 1 Lake Placid Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Placid Marathon was a tough but fun experience. There are hills to contend with. There is amazing scenery. You will be alone for a good chunk of the 2nd loop. However, you will also have tough spectators cheering you on through possible rain. Only comment for the organizer is to offer a more detailed race map at the expo with parking and spectator guide included.

"Great marathon!" (about: 2011)
4-5 previous marathons
| 1 Lake Placid Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I would second some comments made by the other runners here. This would be a difficult course to PR. The race is a hilly loop that you repeat twice and then ends with a third of a mile incline in the last half mile of the race. In 2011, the weather started out a little humid and then turned to rain, but the course was beautiful all the way. You run past brooks, John Brown's farm, the Olympic ski jump, mountains. . . It's lovely and runners encourage each other since you repeatedly see those faster and slower than you on the loop. Right after the half-marathon mark, there is a strange detour into a parking lot with varying surfaces. There should be one volunteer assigned here to direct runners and prevent cheating since the race really thins out at this point (I think 1900 are in the half and 600 in the full). As a slower runner, I appreciated that there was so much food along the course late in the race and at the finish line. I was very surprised at the amount of food offered along the course: bananas, oranges, granola bars, candy, pretzels, many gels . . . I can't eat too much during a race, but it was nice that they didn't pack it up after the front of the pack crossed the finish line. The massage tent was open to very end as well. The race director was prompt in answering questions. There are no pace groups. Do be sure you pack well - it's a small marathon and there is no expo, just a table with Lake Placid marathon gear. I did find all that I needed at the local running store, however.

"Spectacular event a result of great organization" (about: 2011)

| 6+ Lake Placid Marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 The organizers have done a magnificent job growing this marathon while maintaining control and consistently tweaking improvements into it. Much better registration area. More (and well-stocked) water stops than one should need. Great traffic control & police presence. And it's so nice not to have fresh-legged relay runners blasting past me coming home! Just an outstanding event from beginning to end.

"Amazing" (about: 2011)
1 previous marathon
| 1 Lake Placid Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The Lake Placid Marathon was simply amazing. The race support and water/food tents every 1.5 miles or so. The Course was very cool running the the olympic village and running by the olympic ski jump was awesome. The race went well my advice is that if your looking for a new pr don't run lake placid hard hills at the end of the race but if your looking to complete a marathon or do your first one this is the place to be. I have nothing bad to say about the race and I am looking forward to running the lake placid marathon again in the future. It was my first marathon n it won't be my last there. |
