"Good Half Marathon, but $145. Overpriced." (about: 2010)

The course was great, with plenty of water stops. The race is overpriced at $145 for the half and the full. I have run Las Vegas 6 times and this was the last.

"Disappointing" (about: 2010)

First half was fast and went by quickly because of all the scenery. Second half was not so pleasant. It was a tale of 2 marathons - 1st half flat and second half boring. I am also displeased with the way splits were broken down. It did not display splits for the half, 20 miles, or the last 6 miles. That would have been nice. For the $145 that I paid, I was very pleased with the Vegas experience; but the run, and then what followed (very few pictures, no split times, and the aftertaste of everything) really was not an experience I care to suffer through again.

I agree with the comments that say R&R Vegas is a half marathon first and foremost. Running the Strip is fantastic. The second half of the marathon course is mind-numbingly boring. It felt like I was going nowhere.

This will be the only time I will run this marathon. I don't think it's worth the $145 fee. Charging $145 for a half marathon is plain greedy.

This was my 10th full marathon, so I was hoping it would be special. And it was "special" if the most interesting thing you saw in the 2nd half was some adult video emporium called "Sinderella." At first, in my compromised, exhausted state, I thought they were selling Disney stuff.

The first half was the best I've ever run - flat and fast. Finished mile 13 in 1:48 and thought it was going to be a great racing day. And then the horrific second half was upon me. Too many miles of continuous, slightly uphill grade in a mostly industrial wasteland, running around in circles with no end in sight.

I'm only saying this because I really would like to run this race again if they had a better second half and I'm posting here in hopes that the race organizers actually read our comments.

On the plus side, since I finished in under 4 hours, all drink tables were well stocked, food at the finish line was available, and the Brett Michaels concert was very nice.

"Needs some help" (about: 2010)

This is the 2nd time I've run the marathon here. I like this course over the one they had in 2009 but it still needs help.

Some of the pros:
1) Hey, it's Vegas; what a fantastic first half of the marathon.
2) Brett Michaels - he sounded great.
3) Easy registration/packet pickup.
4) Really nice expo (although pricey for R'n'R gear).
5) You truly feel like a rock star from the citizens/workers there after running the marathon.
6) Flat first half with awesome views.
7) The bands that played were actually pretty good.

Negatives:
1) Sort of a dull 2nd half. Not much to look at and the spectators are virtually nil. What happened to the bikini-clad strippers who used to come out?
2) Some of the water stands were undermanned. Still no problems getting fluids though and I didn't mind the Cytomax. Thanks to all of the volunteers, though!
3) Expensive.
4) You could grab only so much food after the race and then you can't go back. A lot of races I've done in the past you could get quite a bit of food. For the price I paid, I'd have hoped for more opportunity for food/drink.
5) Crowded corrals - people who shouldn't have been in the low numbered corrals were present.

This is an awesome half marathon (although it'll be crowded) but I really enjoy the race and love to do it every year - since I love running down Las Vegas' Strip. Also, the city is alive with runners, so it's easy to make friends and share experiences.

"Great half marathon. Not a great full marathon." (about: 2010)

I ran the full marathon and would not recommend it. The first half was great but the second half was very boring. After I crossed the finish line I had a hard time finding the silver blankets to wrap my body in to keep warm. They were just lying on the ground. I tried to find a friend at the family and friend section but there was no way I could make my way to the right section. There were way too many people watching/listening to Brett Michaels. They had the concert right in front of where you meet your friends and family. If that is where you were meeting your friends and family you wouldn't have been able to. It was total chaos. That was just a horrible set-up! There also wasn't enough food at the finish line. I finished in 3:52 and you would think there would have been enough available. I would definitely not run the full again. Maybe the half - and just to have fun!

The second half of the marathon course was not as bad as people are saying. It did not go through pothole-filled, factory-laden industrial sections. It was mostly through residential neighborhoods and corner store businesses - stuff we run by every day in training. Nothing scary. Nothing evil.

"I couldn't agree MORE!" (about: 2010)

2 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon

I ran this race with my small running group of 4 women. I had to convince them to fly out from beautiful Miami to what I thought would be beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada.

This race was made for halfers! They had a horrible second half, with way too many switchbacks, over two freeway overpasses (4 times each) and with a total elevation gain of 451 feet. Coming from Miami, that was tough. They only gave us 5.3 hours to do it. Luckily, I did it and did my best time ever, but do yourself a favor... run a different race. If you want a fun half marathon, go to Vegas. Full marathoners get the shaft. By the way, one of the highlights of this race was getting to see Bret Michaels sing at the end. Guess what? Unless you run a sub-4 marathon, you get nada! I run a plus-4 marathon, so I got exactly that... NOTHING!

One last comment: the medal SUCKED. I think it is supposed to be a blackjack (Ace and Jack), but I can't tell with all the advertisements on the medal. Not to mention the crappy black tech t-shirt that is 3 sizes too big. Who wears black shirts to run in anyway?

The six-hours cutoff is one of the reasons that I registered; then, a month later, it changed to 5.5 - after I already registered, bought 2 plane tickets and paid for a 3-night stay at Mandalay Bay! So guess what? I did all of that and had to run the half instead!! Never will I do a Rock 'n' Roll race again; they should have refunded us.

"Nice first half; not-so-nice second half" (about: 2010)

Actually, most folks have summed it up quite nicely so I will only add that it seems the Rock and Roll folks should only be doing the half. They don't seem to care much for the full marathoners - as the last 3 events I completed with them had the second half of the course run through an industrial wasteland (well, maybe not as much as New Orleans, but certainly San Antonio and this one). Also, they claim to have a band at every mile. Having completed 3 of them this year, I'd say there are maybe 10 or 12 bands max - and again, on the second half they are hard to find. The entry fee is ridiculous; 50 staters should avoid these events.
