"Arrive at the start line early" (about: 2007)

As a local, my suggestion is to get to the start line early. If you plan on driving to Mandalay Bay, the Strip and surrounding streets are closed at 5:00 a.m. So I suggest arrive there at 4:00 a.m. or at a casino off the Strip and walking to the start. Don't take the freeway; you'll get caught in a huge backup unless you arrive at 4:00 a.m. I've run this race for the past three years. I've been there. Stay on streets parallel to the Strip to get to the start.

This race has gotten mixed reviews. Some of the complaints are justified. It seems to have been forgotten that this is a flat course, and potentially fast. There are a lot runners clogging up the streets in the beginning, but after you leave the Strip, there's a little more running room.

One more thing. Next year (2009) this will be a Rock & Roll Marathon. Elite has a solid reputation for well organized races. If you have concerns about your marathon experience, maybe you'll want to wait until next year.

"Recommend running it once" (about: 2007)

I ran the marathon and I think this race is one of those marathons that you run only once in a lifetime. And if you want to run it again, just stick to the Half marathon. The course was nice and flat, but there were hardly any supporters/fans - except at the beginning of the race (which was very entertaining, with the fireworks). There were plenty of water stations and porta-potties, but the race felt very, very long, with hardly anyone cheering you on. The finisher's medal was the highlight of the race for me because this was my first marathon. Next year I am sticking to the half-marathon. I hope more and more people run this race, whether runners put in their negative comments, 'cause this is VEGAS, baby!! Don't forget to enjoy some of the casinos, and of course, the food. There are some great fueling spots... just explore and find your favorite spot. See you at the 2008 LV Marathon!!

"No community interest at all" (about: 2007)

Granted, it's hard to get excited about an event that starts at 6:00 a.m., but it seems like the only people who care about this race are the friends and families of the runners and the course volunteers (thank you!). This is the opposite of other big-city marathons, like NYC, Chicago, Twin Cities, and even Fargo, ND, where the community comes out and cheers you on.

The race itself is OK. After you leave downtown, the course is uninteresting. The 6:00 a.m. start is a real inconvenience.

Worst organized race ever. There were no maps of the starting area, and they couldn't tell you how to get there - we played "follow the crowd." They ran out of safety pins. No security for food afterwards (kids were taking food, so the slow marathoners had little or no food). There was no security for bag-check - my wife walked in and grabbed mine when they couldn't find it. Look back at the comments for the '06 race. Or Google the June 3 AP story about the race.

"Great first-timer race" (about: 2007)

I have run races in the past, but this was my first full marathon. For a 1st-time race, I thought it was great. LOVED running down the Strip as the sun came up. The enthusiasm of the crowd and runners was great. There's nothing like running a race with Elvis. ;) The course was nice and flat. The last mile was very difficult because it is completely deserted - no one to cheer you to the finish, which was very tough for a 1st timer. Also, there wasn't much for food at the end. On the plus side, who can complain about an open bar party for runners the night of the race? What a way to celebrate your finish. I would recommend this race to all my friends.

The 2007 Vegas Marathon did not include running down Freemont Street. Too bad. It was the most interesting part in downtown. That's really the only complaint I have. I ran Vegas in 2006, and the 2007 race was a big improvement.
Is the Las Vegas Marathon worth running year after year? Probably not.
Is it worth running just once? Yes!

"Great marathon, getting better!" (about: 2007)

This was my 3rd straight Las Vegas Marathon and I've seen major improvements each year. The start and the first 8 miles are incredible. Nothing quite like running down the strip. The half-full turn point should have been marked better (I'd expect this to be fixed for '08). There are not as many spectators as at most big races, but the ones who were out there were great. The finish area was much improved over last year, with more food and more organization. All in all, a great experience, and it's nice to see the organizers make improvements based on the runners' suggestions. I will definitely be back this year.

"Lackluster Las Vegas" (about: 2007)

The elites for the half-marathon were not diverted, and ran the full marathon course. The start was absolute chaos and it was nigh impossible to get there at the start barring an *extremely* early start time. On the course, after a few miles, there was no support, either from fans or from water/food. When the half and full met up, I spent more energy dodging 3+ half-marathon finishers than trying to run a decent time, and when I finished, the food and drink were less than stellar. Devine needs to see what other marathons are doing RIGHT, and find out what they are doing WRONG. The course was flat, and has the potential to be a quick run. Regardless, I won't be back, and I don't recommend it.

"congested start, nice course" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I really did enjoy the course, but had a five-minute delay starting the race due to congestion with the half and full starting together. I thought I had given myself enough time and had a race number to get a preferred start but couldn't find a way to get to the front of the start. I won my age group and contacted the race website right away and was told the awards would be mailed out at the start of the year. Now Elis says Devine was given the info and it's in their hands and the message board is down. The finish is also difficult due to the blend of half and full marathoners at this point. Fireworks were great.

"I DO NOT recommend this marathon" (about: 2007)

1 previous marathon | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 2

The starting line was definitely great, with nice entertainment and a ton of spectators. The first 3 miles had a lot of volunteers and the water stations were well equipped, but after the third mile they had cups out at the stations and we had to get our own water from jugs. The last part of the run was on the backside of the Strip and there was a ton of construction. Even with the chip on my shoe, I never got a finish time. This marathon is extremely unorganized and I would NOT recommend it to anyone trying to enjoy a 1/2 marathon
