"Very Inspirational Race" (about: 2021)

For 2021, race is held on a 1.5 mile loop in a huge office complex in Overland Park. Major salute to military and first responders. Civilian plane flyover at start. First lap is lead by American Legion guys on Harleys. RD last comment to them, 'make as much noise as you want'. Many different distances. Marathon starts at noon. The web site has some discrepancies, but I'm guessing those will be ironed out. Support is excellent. Highly recommended.

This race is so meaningful due to it being on 9-11. The course is a one mile loop which I didn't mind. You really make friends on the course this way. The race is well run, has ample fluid and food support on the course due to them running a 5k, half, full and ultra marathon at the same time. Parking is right by the start/finish and if you need to go to your car for a snack or to rest a bit, you can. The pasta dinner the night before was included in the race fee which was really nice. This is a small race which I enjoyed. It would be ideal for first time racers or any distance and great for a training run for an upcoming marathon. I would do this race again. I really enjoyed it.

"Marathon Finish" (about: 2015)

Nice 1 mile loop through college campus. Good volunteers and wide range of snacks at the end of each loop. Lots of students with kind words for the runners.

Only negative was the finish. Event seems to be setup primarily for the ultra-marathon. Fortunately I was counting my own laps, because there was no one to tell me I had completed the final marathon lap. Not sure if there were finisher medals since no one was at the finish line.

Run is probably better for those running the full 9:11, or those running short distances where everyone finishes close to the same time.

"Awesome flat run !! Great volunteers and support !" (about: 2013)

I came in wanting to do an Ultra in 2013. Kept watching the forecast and it kept showing higher temps. Race day was hot(mid 90's at noon start) started cramping... took a break and got back out there, even when family trying to get me to stop. Lots of inspiration with policeman in full uniform doing 26.2 and Military guys and gals in full gear. Support was great, basically every half mile a water stop and cold towels. There are spectators, just not tons and that is ok.... I stopped a little early and ended night with 29.3 !! Weather looks good for 2014 !!! Hope to do at least 50K....Excited for new course too...

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

My 1st marathon; chosen for GREAT support (every 1/2 mile in 2013), GREAT cause, and flat course. It was 96 degrees, cloud cover once, for a couple of minutes, that I can remember, with good wind to help somewhat. Not for the faint of heart! Tents for family and participants, runners/walkers of all kinds, and lots of family members participating. GREAT volunteers who kept you in good spirits the entire time. I like the idea proposed in another post: put your vehicle on the west side of the mall (instead of the south side) so you can make your own, specific stops. THANKS Tony Drew, et.al. I will be back!

"Hot & Windy" (about: 2012)

A September marathon in Kansas with a noon start? Yes it was hot (high80s) and windy. If you run marathons for scenic views and the bling this is not the run for you. The 1mile loops around an unshaded parking lot and the small 5K quality medals serve as a reminder that this run is about honoring our 9/11 heroes and the soldiers who have sacrificed since. On the up-side the volunteers were great and restrooms and water stops were never more than a mile away. If I could suggest anything it would be to figure out away to do an early morning start to try to beat the heat.

"Terrific Event" (about: 2011)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Patriots' Run
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Patriots' Run Marathon & Ultra is a small, well-organized event I thought had a very casual feel. The COMPLETELY flat course is not at all scenic (one mile loops through a mall parking lot), and it is not shaded, but that didn't prevent it from being a terrific event.

Start was uniquely at noon. It was hot this year (at least 85 F), but at least it was dry. Live music throughout the event, that was really nice as you approached the start/finish area.

Support was FABULOUS - there might have been more volunteers than runners!! Plenty of water/sports drink, and lots of food during the race (and after). If you parked on the backside of the course (still in the mall parking lot) you went right by your car. So not even ten steps off the course and you could quickly access items unique to your own support.

Lot of military participation - some in full gear (including rucksack!).

Plenty of kids around - but never in the way. It was really a wonderful event for those with families. The kids get to see what Mommy and/or Daddy's weekend trips to this marathon or that marathon is all about.

Thank you, Olathe!

"Awesome for beginners & recreational runners" (about: 2011)

I live her locally but this is the first time I have done this run. I am slow and just run to keep weight off and in shape. This was the perfect marathon route for me. I had 9 hours and 11 minutes to finish, if needed. I also loved the loop because you were never out there by yourself for stretches at a time. You had all kinds of people to talk to if you wanted to. This was a great organized race. My thanks to all who volunteered to make it happen. My deepest thanks to all our service men & women, and other first responder who were there yesterday reminding me of true sacarifices made everyday!

First, I recognize that, like many runners who travel 20 or 30 weekends each year, I am high-maintenance. Because I needed to catch a plane, the race director let me start early, which caused some initial problems, but which were worked out. Thank you, Tony.

Second, I thought 26 one-mile loops would not be very good, but you got to talk to your friends throughout the event, the many porta-potties were never more than a mile away, and tremendous aid stations were never more than a mile away. There was also entertainment and plenty of post-race food.

This was a very nice, low-key event. I highly recommend it.

This race honors those touched by the tragedy of 9/11. It gives runners the choice of a marathon or an ultra-marathon... or really any distance you choose! I opted to continue for the entire 9 hours and 11 minutes and found that the course was well supported for the entire time. There were cheering volunteers, LOTS of food, ice water, entertainment... and lots of encouragement from other runners. The course was a one-mile loop through the parking lot/service road of a local mall. It was a great venue since parking was ample, and traffic was not a concern. There is a hotel (La Quinta, very nice!) right in the parking lot as well. I enjoyed this event and plan to do it again! Well done... and for an outstanding cause!
