With the rising cost of marathons this one is affordable and New Glasgow is beautiful. It is well organized and a Boston Qualifier. I look forward to participating again 2014.

I want to offer my thanks to the organizers of this event, all the great helpful volunteers and the supportive crowd of New Glasgow. You all made the marathon a great race for me and I am very grateful. I loved the course (both on pavement and trail), loved the food pre and post-race, loved the finish and the cheering! I hope to return next year. Thank you New Glasgow!

I first ran this marathon in 2004 and intend to return for the sixth time this year. Other marathons could take lessons from the organizers of the Johnny Miles. This is an affordable marathon that provides loads of extras you won't find elsewhere. In 2009, for their modest entry fee you got a great commemorative ball cap, tech shirt, pasta dinner, all the donuts and coffee you could handle prior to the race, and a boxed lunch to devour after your post race massage. The organization of the event is top notch from start to finish and you can't beat the friendly, small town atmosphere. Although I was initially leary of a marathon which involved doing 4-1ok and 1 small loop, it turns out this is an ideal set up for race officials, spectators and competitors alike. As a runner, you are rarely out of sight of other competitors and it is easy to monitor your progress (and that of your friends) and plan your moves as you negotiate the varying terrain of the 1ok loop (ie. a long straight stretch of flat roadway to a rolling trail system along a river to a couple of good hills within a subdivision and ending with a gradual downhill to the finish area). The only portion which may prove frustrating for some is the trail section -it is sometimes necessary to use your manners to alert slower runners and walkers (yes, some don't heed the officials request not to walk 2-3 abreast) to obtain room to pass. This congestion is usually minimal after your fist time around the loop. All in all, it is an event that should not be missed - I hope they don't change a thing!

What a great time! We read the reviews (see Naples and Atlanta below), and flew into Halifax. It is a small, beautiful airport, with rental cars at the terminal. Getting around is super easy, with hardly any traffic. Beautiful countryside! We got in late the first night and stayed at the Inn on the Lake - not too far from airport. It's a great place, with a quaint bar and restaurant. The people were super nice (a recurring theme in Nova Scotia). We drove to Pictou in about an hour and a half on a great two-lane highway. We had reservations at The Customs House, and it was grand. It's a late 1800s government building, restored by twin brothers with roots in the town and careers in the Canadian Army. We had twelve-foot ceilings in our corner room looking over Pictou Harbor. I was a hero for that pick! The whole town is easy for walking, and we enjoyed the best seafood of our life. I'm sending my parents here just for vacation! We practiced carb loading with plentiful samples of local draft beer. We didn't find any that we didn't like. :)

Saturday afternoon we picked up our packets in New Glasgow. We stopped at the fire station to get directions, and one of the firemen jumped in his car and led us right to the front door! Did I mention they are super nice there?

We showed up late (oops), and they dug out our packets anyway and, yes, were super nice. As mentioned, the technical shirts are outstanding. The embroidered hat is now the best hat I own; it even has embroidery on the back and a Nova Scotian flag. We also got cool, "green," reusable grocery bags, timing chips, and there are free race pictures provided.

New Glasgow is a very picturesque "Mayberry" town bisected by a small river. Sunday morning we drove over and parked (15-20 minutes). There were about 1,600 total runners, which included all races (5K, 10K, half and full). We ran the half, and I was a little skeptical about us starting so close behind the shorter races, but it wasn't an issue. There was lots of room to run. The half runs the course twice, which I liked because I knew what was coming and how much time I had to catch up to grandma and her walker. About half of the race is on a trail next to the river, and this was my favorite surface to run on. It was smooth and easy on the joints. The road is offset by the numerous residents and spectators, clapping, cheering, beating on their water jugs, and ringing the cowbells (thank you, ma'am). The temperature was in the low 60's, and the periodic rain made for a great body temp. There were plentiful water stations, honey buckets, and course directors. They have a great finish line, and we got cheers from being from Lake Stevens (Seattle). There were lots of great foods and drinks for the post-race party. We would have stayed longer, but Pictou seafood and liquid carbs were calling.

This race weekend is well worth the extra distance you cover in getting there! Next time we are taking extra time for the day trip to Prince Edward Island and a day in Halifax. When in Pictou, don't miss The Saltwater, and there is free pool at The Highlander on Sundays (blast from the past).

"A community "event" in a small town" (about: 2008)

This was a very interesting course. Half road and half trail (I personally don't like running on trails, but heck, that's just me). Essentially 4 laps around a 10KM course, plus an extra 2 KM loop at the start, which made it a little boring, but at least I knew what to expect after the first lap.

Massive logjam at the start, with several slower runners from the half and 10K to negotiate around. This was very frustrating and confusing.

Course was fairly flat, with only a couple of very short but nasty hills, which marathoners had to climb 4 times. :(

In some cases, roads were not very well blocked off so had to dodge some traffic.

Nearby Pictou is a very cute scenic town, with beaches close by. Lovely race kit, including hat, shirt, medal, and pasta dinner - all for just $40! Great post-race food kit too!

Overall, race seemed to cater more to families and casual 10K runners.

There are no media or bands, and only a very small expo. The 5K, 10K, half and full marathons all line up one behind the other to start. But it sure was fun. This is very much a community event. Most of the people in town know about the JM running weekend and look forward to it. There were probably 1400 in total, 100 of which I believe were signed up for the full marathon. We did the half (two loops) - the outbound run is kind of weird because you go through part of Stellarton and they don't close the road. Most of the vehicles are very accommodating and stick to the wrong side of the street - most of them. The backside is on the Albion Trail, which runs along a scenic little river. The spectators are very sparse - most sticking to the start/finish area and you see them on the loop. But they are very enthusiastic.

The whole town was extremely welcoming and helpful (we were there from Atlanta, GA so we were a bit of a novelty). I switched at the expo from full to half due to illness without a hitch. While the medals weren't much and the photos were okay (free), they gave everyone the best darned long-sleeved technical shirts I've seen - they alone were worth the entry fee. And the JM visor hats are a collector's item. We stayed at the Comfort Inn Suites and were within walking distance of the start. There is ample close-by parking too. If it were not so far, I'd make it every year. It's a very neighborly affair.

This year I ran the half. Perfect weather for race day - cool and cloudy. Very well-organized on race day, though a little chaotic at kit pick-up/pasta dinner. If the event continues to grow - and it should, as it is a great event - perhaps a larger venue will be required.

It is easy to park at the start/finish, and the spectators and volunteers were all enthusiasm, all the time. Pasta meal, breakfast, post-race lunch, shirt and hat all for $40? Can't be beat.

Well done, race crew!!

"Sure beats Florida in June" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Johnny Miles Marathon

If you are looking for a very low-key marathon to run in June, this is it. Weather was outstanding (55 degrees at the start) and never got above 64 degrees. Unbelievable organization for a small-town event. FYI, if you are planning on using your USA pace band to track your pace, throw it away as everything is marked in "K." It wasn't until I reached the 5K marker that I realized I was in trouble. On a brighter note, it is very nice not to have a marker each mile letting you know how many more you have to go. For a Florida native, the hills were a bit formidable - although by Nova Scotia standards it was flat. Nova Scotia is beautiful in June and I would highly recommend the trip. Very easy to fly into Halifax and drive the hour and a half to New Glasgow. Stay in Pictou as it is very hospitable and only 8 miles from New Glasgow. Take a day trip to Prince Edward Island while there and sample the best lobster in the land as well as uncomparable views.

This was my first half marathon in New Glasgow and I enjoyed the route which goes along a scenic canal/river area. The route is relatively flat with a few hills but nothing frightening. Only drawback is that you have to do the route twice for a half and 4 times for the full but outside of that it is a well organized race and worth participating in. Not a big event but good community support for a small town.

I ran the HALF marathon 2 years ago, and loved it. The only drawback is that the half was a two-loop course. So do the math: the full marathon is 4 loops. But don't let this stop you. Half of the course is on a nice trail, it's relatively flat, and the race is well organized. The volunteers are enthusiastic and the crowd, although not big, is very supportive... Everything you want in a small town race, including your choice of distances: full, half, 10km, 5k fun run, kids run... Great family event.
