"It was a fun event" (about: 2015)

Griffith Park is the world largest park inside a city. Imagine that even after you have run an entire marathon, you have not gone though half of the parks or trails yet. You don't need to cross any street or road in the entire run. Along most of the trails, you are running along the surrounding city, Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood sign, the LA Zoo, golf course, and freeway.

You may choose to run a full marathon or a half marathon on race day, once you have registered for a full marathon. There is no requirement to pick up your bib a day before the race. You pick up your bib a few minutes right before the race. The parking lot is next to the starting line/finish line.

It is a tough course. About half of the trails are either uphills or downhills. Some of them are very steep. You will meet other hikers along the trails in different places. Some sections of the trails are horse trail. You will need to slow down or stop to yield to the horses. In the 2015 run, it was a hot day for marathon. The course was not well marked. Not far away from the starting line, everyone ran into a wrong route, which getting narrow to make everyone realized that it was a wrong path. After that, people ran into wrong paths in different places. I ran into a total of three wrong paths. I think I was among the average. For this reason, it is nice to run with a small group with the same pace together.

The number of aid stations was about average for a trail marathon. You had to carry your own water bottle. The aid stations were well equipped with water, electrolytes, oranges, bananas, and salt pills. A couple of aid stations supplied gel as well. The volunteers in the aid stations and at the major intersection were very helpful.

There were limited spectators along the way. You may see more hikers or horse riders. There was a young cheering group in the middle of trail, far away from everything. That was a big surprise to everybody. It was heartwarming to see them, especially when we were not sure if we were getting lost or not along the way. There was a loop back point. The runners cheered each other along the way. There were no more than a dozen of spectators cheering you at the finishing line area.

The race director is a nice lady. She greeted every runner at the finish line. I think she did her best to have all organized. In addition to a medal, you earned a belt buckle for finishing Marathon. Overall, it was a fun event.

"Great course / poor organization" (about: 2015)

Something you would only see it in the movies actually happened.
At the first aid station, volunteers gave us the wrong direction. We went left instead of right. From there on, we were trying all available paths to find the right one. It could have been a great race.

Who needs spectators when you have such amazing vistas. All the stops were well supported and encouraging.

"Tough Course in Many Ways" (about: 2015)

Imagine running a trail marathon inside a city's park. You can do it only in Los Angeles. After 26.2 miles, you have not had a chance to loop around the entire park yet. Along the way, you can enjoy the natural beauty in this largest inside city park; you can see surrounding city views from different directions. No doubt, this is a beautiful course.
It was a tough run, in many ways. The course is filled with uphill and downhill slopes. Some of them are very steep. It was a very exhaust run. The course marks are not clear. Everyone got lost not far away from the start line. After that, people get lost in many different sections. Some of them due to the marks were confusion; some of them due to the runners ahead kicked out the mark signs. I made wrong turns in three different intersections. After chatting with other runners afterwards, I realized that's an average.
The organizer is very nice. She greeted every runner at the finish line apologizing confusing course marks. I think she tried her best to get thing organized. The parking was easy, very next to the start/finish line. The before the race bib number pick up was smooth and quick. There was even a young cheering group appeared in the middle of section, a location far away from everywhere.
Every aid station was a quality one. The stations were well loaded with water, electrolyte, salt, gel, banana, and orange. The attendees were very helpful. Like all the trail runs, there were very limited aid stations.
You have to share the path with many other hikers, and horse riders. In some cases, we had to slow down, and even stop to yield the path to others. I did not run into any issue, though. There were very few spectators, except the cheering group in the middle, and handful of spectators at the very end. After all, this is a trail marathon.
It was a hot day. On the top of the hills, there were breeze to cool you down. In some valleys, there was no breeze, it was steamy hot. In many sections, there was no shade.
Overall, it was a fun race. I enjoyed the run.
