"Could Be The Toughest Marathon Course In U.S." (about: 2018)

You never know what you'll get when running a summer marathon weather-wise. Luckily, race morning was cool. Packet-pick up was the day before in Youngstown and was easy. The small expo was ok w/a few vendors and Second Sole was there to sell some expensive (!) merchandise (coffee mugs for $15). Anyways, the expo was an easy process, no waiting in lines, well organized. Race day arrived and there was plenty of parking and porta potties at the start line. The start of the race and finish were nearly next to each other. The course was beautiful but extreme. If you were looking to set a PR or qualify for Boston this is not the race! First, the race course is probably not certified which is fine because it is so extremely difficult with very long uphills, toe crushing down hills, and plenty of potholes to try to get around. Running through Mill Creek Park is beautiful but when the majority of the marathon is run through the park its very frustrating. At least there is plenty of shade through the park and the volunteers were helpful with clifshot, water, and Gatorade. Before ever considering this marathon, one should run at least one of the half marathons through the park to get an idea of the extreme challenge. At mile 14 I was on my regular pace but the next 4 started to slow me down with more long, winding, hills. The last 8 miles seemed to be a continuous uphill. I finally crossed the finish line and was able to enjoy the post race refreshments which there were plenty of...pizza, beer, fruit, bagels, water. The race medal was nice too. Overall, the course was way too difficult. I've run numerous other marathons and couldn't help wondering why the race director would design such a difficult course with plenty of other streets and roads in the vicinity. I heard after the race that participation was down due to the difficult course from last year. I suspect it will drop again even though they said this year's course was redesigned. Everything, other than the course, was well organized and convenient. Personally, I won't run this again.
