"Fast, Tough Course" (about: 2019)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Mt Hood Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 1 Agree with most of C.O.'s comments below, except I didn't find the traffic on Hwy 26 objectionable. I went out in the first wave (at 5am), so maybe traffic got worse later. Despite a lot of hill training, my legs were pretty dead by mile 19. The last 7 miles were rolling hills that felt mostly uphill, so it was a matter of hanging on for dear life. That said, I PR'd by 4 minutes and BQ'd by 18. I estimate I would have been about 5-7 minutes slower on a flat course in similar conditions. On-course spectators were prohibited, so don't plan on any fan support until the last 50 yds.

"Running on the Shoulder of HIgh Way is not Fun" (about: 2019)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Mt Hood Marathon
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 I agree with C.O.'s comments about the noisy route. We have to run on highway #26 shoulder for 20 miles. The noise and high speed vehicle passing by was an unpleasant experience. The event started by breaking into 5 waves with 15 minutes apart to make sure the running stream is thin and fitting into some narrow shoulder sections. The buses from the downtown Portland were scheduled 3:00am ~ 4:00am when we book the bus. Two days before the race, we were told that the bus loading would be changed to 2:30am~2:45am, or you will miss the bus. This is unexpected and unreasonable. The course is down hills most of the way. There is an uphill in mile 5, and many long section of uphills after mile 20. So, this is not your typical Revel event. This was the 4th Revel course I have run. This is the worst so far. I don't recommend this course to any of my friend. On the positive side, expo, start line, and finish line were well organized. The aid stations were well loaded and the volunteers were friendly and very helpful. Visiting Portland was really fun.

"5 Great Miles Then 20 Miles of Busy Highway" (about: 2019)
50+ previous marathons
| 1 Mt Hood Marathon
COURSE: 1 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 I've run over a 100 marathons. This race had some of the very best aspects I've encountered and some of the very worst. It has a large elevation drop that is very hard on the legs if you don't train for running downhill. Here are my thoughts: GOOD: Organization - was excellent before, during, and after the race. Expo - somewhat small but had a variety of vendors and everything a runner needs. Start format - we were bussed to the start according to our starting (wave) time. Soon after we arrived our wave started. This worked very well for shuttles and for access to porta potties. Medal - very nice large & solid medal with spinning center circle - also nice ribbon. Goodies - Race packet included a pair of gloves, a Mylar blanket, sun glasses, cramping prevention pills and lotion, and coupons / ads. Shirt - had choice of material & sleeve length. Choose a long sleeve tech shirt and it is very nice. Finish area - very nice setting in park. Good food including pizza, bananas, bagels, Coke & Spite, PowerAde, water, and 1 free beer. Finish also had vendors, free 'air cast' leg therapy, free massages, photo ops, etc. Aide stations - nicely spaced and well stocked. All had PowerAde and water. Some had energy gels, oranges, Vaseline, and porta potties. Most manned by very enthusiastic volunteers. 1st 5 miles - were run with a full lane for runners and absolutely gorgeous scenery - the best I've ever seen in any race. BAD: Course - after the first ~5 miles runners had to run on the shoulder of a highway for the next ~20 miles. Initially the highway was 2 lanes, but it turned into a 4 lane highway for ~11 miles. We were running with traffic that was speeding past us at 60 to 70 MPH. Most of the time the shoulder was ~10 feet wide, but in some places the runners only had 3.5 feet between the road and the guardrail! The highway was very busy with lots traffic including semi trucks and pickups pulling trailers. The noise, and exhaust fumes were terrible. It was very unsettling to have vehicles speeding up behind you and passing so close to you. And this lasted for ~20 miles! Had I known there was even 5 miles of this I would NOT have run this race and there was 20 miles of it. I hated it. Again, my thoughts on this race are bipolar. REVEL did an excellent job with everything except ~20 miles of the course. If there was any way they could get 1 lane of traffic closed for the runners this would be a great race. As it is I would never run it again. I will definitely consider REVEL races in the future as they did a great job, but I will research their race course before signing up to ensure that most of the course is not right next to a busy highway. Peace. |
