Air Force Officials Cancel 5th Marathon
WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – Base officials here have cancelled
the 5th U.S. Air Force Marathon, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept.
22, in response to concerns about the safety of participants and volunteers
alike, following the suspected terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center
and Pentagon Sept. 11 in New York City, N.Y., and Washington, D.C.
"We were prepared for a recording-breaking year, with over 3500 runners
signed up and 12 wheelchair participants," said Tom Fisher, marathon
coordinator. "Although the cancellation is difficult for those who have
worked so hard preparing for the marathon, in light of the recent
activities, it is the best decision."
Registrants will be individually notified as soon as further details are
finalized.
