HARTFORD MARATHON FOUNDATION INTRODUCES NEW COURSE FOR 2007 UNITED
TECHNOLOGIES GREATER HARTFORD MARATHON
First course change in eight years
Hartford, Conn. (July 12, 2007)— The 14th annual United Technologies
Greater Hartford Marathon features a new course for the first time in eight
years that showcases a revitalized riverfront and incorporates fewer turns
and hills. The half marathon, team relay and 5K also are new courses.
"We are very excited about these changes to the course," said Beth Shluger,
Executive Director of the Hartford Marathon Foundation. "We believe the
new route will attract more people, whether they are runners, walkers or
spectators. The course is less grueling and the Connecticut River setting
is even more beautiful."
The new course uses Prospect Street in East Hartford, instead of Main
Street, taking runners completely off a busy thoroughfare. Miles 20-26 in
Hartford are re-routed to include a new riverfront trail. Upon exiting the
trail, runners will head toward Bushnell Park for the traditional finish
under the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch.
Changes to the half marathon course also are exciting. While the half
marathon and marathon still begin together at Bushnell Park, the
half-marathoners will split away at the three-mile mark and head back to
Hartford via the new riverfront trail. Once they exit the trail, they
will travel through the vibrant, revitalized Park Street to cheering
spectators and festive Latino music.
