Joan Benoit Samuelson, Race Weekend - May 23 through 25, 2014
Burlington, Vermont( December 6, 2013) – RunVermont and the KeyBank Vermont
City Marathon have proudly announced that Olympic Gold Medalist, Joan
Benoit Samuelson will be their guest at the 26th KeyBank Vermont City
Marathon. She will be involved in every aspect of Race Weekend activities
with many opportunities for runners to meet Joan.
In addition to being an Olympic Gold Medalist at the 1984 Olympics in the
marathon, Joan Benoit Samuelson, known to many as "Joanie", also won the
1979 and 1983 Boston Marathon. She set the American Record at the Chicago
Marathon in 1985, running a time of 2:21:21 that stood for eighteen years.
The 2014 KeyBank Vermont City Marathon & Relay will coincide with the 30th
anniversary of the women's marathon being introduced into the Olympics in
Los Angeles, CA where Benoit Samuelson won gold. "We're very excited to
have Joanie here for this year's race. She's one of the most accomplished
athletes in our sport and one of the greatest ambassadors. I'm confident
that we'll show her what a spectacular race we have." said Peter Delaney,
Executive Director of RunVermont.
Benoit Samuelson will be present at The Sports & Fitness Expo both Friday,
May 23 and Saturday, May 24. She will be the Welcome Speaker and Honorary
Starter at the KeyBank Vermont City Marathon & Relay on Sunday, May 25.
The KeyBank Vermont City Marathon is the largest sporting event in Vermont
with over 8000 runners competing in the marathon and relay events. It is a
fast and spectator friendly course; highlighting the historic city streets
as well as the majestic lake and mountain views of Burlington, VT. The
KBVCM brings over three million dollars to Vermont annually. For more
