FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Weru Wins Again at the Lake Tahoe Marathon
(SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.)- It was win number three at the Lake Tahoe
Marathon last Sunday when 31-year-old Kenyan John Weru of Oakland won the
race for the third time with a time of 2 hours, 59 minutes and 50.31
seconds.
Weru was also a champion in 2003 with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes and 5
seconds, and again in 2004 at 2 hours 37 minutes and 26 seconds. Local
resident and 52-year-old Margaret Ashe of Olympic Valley took home the 2010
women's title for the 26.2-mile race with a time of 3 hours, 34 minute and
29.18 seconds.
Race Director Les Wright couldn't have asked for better conditions, with
Tahoe's trademark fall weather at a perfect 52 degrees for the start and
then warming to the high 70s in the afternoon making for a festive party at
Pope Beach after the races. According to Wright, nearly 3,000 participants
took part in Lake Tahoe Marathon Race Week, September 22-26, with another
6,000 friends and family members visiting the region to support the racers.
"The Lake Tahoe Marathon continues to offer a number of exciting events,
while driving tourism during a traditionally slow time of year," said
Wright.
According to Wright, there was also a big win in the Great Lake Tahoe Cycle
Race when Jesse Miller-Smith of Truckee finished the 72-mile race with a
record-breaking time of 2 hours, 50 minutes and 21.9 seconds, followed
closely by Justin Rossi of Reno with a time of 2 hours, 50 minutes and 22
seconds.
