Air Force Materiel Command, headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio, is the winner of the U.S. Air Force Marathon Major Command Challenge Commander's Trophy. The Air Force Marathon had over 7,400 participants compared to 6,300 for the 2007 marathon race.

Andy Houghton finished his first marathon on the grounds of Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio. Considering that Houghton lost both legs in a motorcycle accident at the age of 20, just finishing a mile is impressive. Houghton was among several disabled runners to finish the marathon. Captain Castro, who lost his sight in an explosion, finished the marathon in 4 hours and 16 minutes.

Nearly 7,400 runners participated in a record crowd at the 12th annual Air Force Marathon. Nathan Peter from Michigan won the men's race with a time of 2 hours, 30 minutes and 37 seconds. Despite the damaging effects of Hurricane Ike the course was clutter free and full of adequate volunteers.

A record number of runners appeared last year for the 2007 Air Force Marathon. That record number is forecast to rise again this year to over 6,700. Last year winner was Josh Cox who ran an Olympic Trials Qualifying time of 2 hours 20 minutes and 57 seconds.
