Jess Ruthe surprised herself by running the Auckland Marathon as a training run and winning the women's race with a time of 2 hours and 49 minutes which earned her seventeenth place overall.

Kris Gemmel will hope to add the Auckland Marathon title to his Dunedin and Christchurch titles. He will have to stave off attacks from 2008 champion Ben Ruthe of Tauranga

Ben Ruthe won the 2008 Auckland Marathon. He will line up next to his wife who has set her eyes on the 2012 Olympic Marathon. The couple had nearly lost her father and their son earlier this year.
