A small but strong elite field will look toward breaking the course record at the Big Sur Marathon this weekend. Among the contenders will be last year's winner, Arsenio Ortiz, who also holds the second fastest time on the course, 2:19:16 enroute to his 1999 victory; Sergey Nochevny, last year's runner-up; Hector Lopez, last year's third place finisher and a course newcomer, Kenya’s Jonathan Ndambuki who has run a personal best of 2:10:58. The Big Sur Marathon, known for being one of the most beautiful in the world, is also very difficult, and the course record of 2:16:39 has stood since 1987.
