MAKAU, FINALLY

As expected, Patrick Makau of Kenya won the 31st BMW Frankfurt Marathon on a cool bright morning in German's financial centre. But the manner of his victory, in 2.06.08, was far from expected. On a clear, sunny morning, but with temperatures struggling to reach 2C (35F) by the midday finish, Makau never looked comfortable at the back of a leading group of a dozen.

Makau, 27, has been the world's fastest marathoner for the past two years, the second of which was the world record 2.03.38 he ran in Berlin 13 months ago, during which he disposed of previous record holder, Haile Gebrselassie in exemplary fashion.
