The Volcano Art Center and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park announced that 2008 marked the final running of the annual Kilauea Volcano Runs within the park.

Alan Ryan of Laupahoehoe, Hawaii won the redirected Volcano Marathon on the island. He covered the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours, 20 minutes and 55 seconds. The overall female finisher was Amy Ray-McWhinney of Keaau, with a time of 4 hours, 9 minutes and 29 seconds. Due to heavy volcanic activity the course was altered to avoid new lava flows.
