The Knoxville Marathon organizers have announced that the Knoxville Marathon kids run will be held at 6 pm on Saturday to help increase the overall participation for the March 29th event. Race officials hope to double or triple the size of the event with the move to the night before the marathon.

Knoxville Local Takes the Marathon Prize

Stewart Ellington won the Knoxville Marathon in 2 hours 28 minutes and 36 seconds. Second place was Justin Gillette of Niles Michigan whose wife won the women's event in 3 hours and 3 minutes. Michael Wardian who won the National Marathon on Saturday placed third in 2 hours and 29 minutes and 50 seconds.

Ellington wins Knoxville Marathon

Stewart Ellington won the 2008 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon in 2:28:36 and Melissa Gillette won the women's marathon in 3:02.51. Gillette's husband Justin won the men's race in 2007. Ellington had run the half-marathon the past three years, but this year decided to make a hard push at winning the full marathon.

Knoxville Marathon sponsor is long term

Following a press conference with Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam discussing the Knoxville Marathon, Tony Spezia, president and CEO of Covenant Health, said the Knoxville Marathon can count on long-term sponsorship from his company. Covenant Health is in the first year of a three-year deal (through 2010) to sponsor the Knoxville Marathon. It didn't officially become the primary sponsor until the second year in 2006 when the marathon became known as the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.
