The Mercedes Marathon course will no long run through Mountain Brook or Redwood. This also means that the marathon course will not cross Red Mountain, a very challenging part of the 26.2 mile course the race director Valerie McClean thinks might have prevented the race from growing.

Mercedes Marathon event organizer Valerie McLean may be rerouting the Mercedes course to make it faster. The course winds through Homewood and Mountain Brook where there are significant climbs that impede a faster time. In a day where races are boasting fast times Mercedes seems to be wanting to keep in stride to attract more runners.

Eight hundred participants took part in the 2008 Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham, AL. Among the masses were locals, Andrew Cargile, Tripp Wynne, Raymond Boone and Mel Griffin, who trained and came out to race. Gilbert Kiptoo of Danbury, Connecticut won the race in 2:23.

Gilbert Kiptoo went on to win the 2008 Mercedes Marathon even though Andy Martin raced out to an early lead.
