Gabriel Lucido led Sunday's Nokia Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Marathon in New Orleans for most of the race before finishing as champion in 2:34:12. Lucido trailed only two half-marathon runners, then had the course to himself when they finished. It was a different story for the women. Chris Purslow of Waco, TX, passed Barbara Holcomb of Cullman, AL, in the final 800 meters. Purslow finished with a personal best of 3:08.43.

Last year Brandon Wingate was the first local runner to ever have completed the Mardi Gras Marathon, and he finished fifth place in 2 hours 45 minutes. This year he will run it again. The race is in it's 38th year, and is the fourth oldest marathon in the United States.

Kaye Bultemeier, nurse practitioner with Women's Health Associates is running her first marathon Saturday in New Orleans. She, like many runners, needs a reason to put herself through a 26.2 mile race, and for this she is absolutely dedicated to her job. Bultemeier does everything from delivering babies to searching for cancer's cure, and she is aiming to raise over $2500 to support The Wellness Community-East Tennessee, based out of Knoxville.
