After five years as title sponsor of the Ocean State Marathon, Brooks Pharmacy withdrew support of the event last week. The Brooks decision to end the association, which saw the marathon grow into one of the most competitive in the United States, was based on low overall entrant numbers and economics. The event, including the addition of a companion half marathon, is scheduled for October 12, Columbus Day weekend, at Providence, RI.

32 year old Kenyan Elly Rono won his second Ocean State Marathon in two years. In a steady drizzle Rono's winning time was 2:14:48. Using a much feared hill near the end of the course to his advantage Rono made his push there. He pulled ahead of James Karanja and Gilbert Rutto to finish strong.

Viktoria Klimina of Russia won Sunday's Ocean State Marathon in Rhode Island in 2:28:30, a new course record for women. Elly Rono of Kenya took the men's title for the second straight year, finishing in 2:14:48.

The 10th Annual Brooks Pharmacy Ocean State Marathon will be run on Sunday, October 13 over a restructured course entirely within the City of Providence and will feature a record prize purse of $122,000. The 26.2 mile event is designed to lead over 2000 runners, including 20 to 25 elite athletes, on a tour of Rhode Island's capital city that will take in all of the diverse, historically rich neighborhoods, beautiful Roger Williams Park and the vibrantly revitalized downtown.
