ING has pulled out as the naming sponsor for the Ottawa Marathon. Despite being the largest marathon in Canada, Ottawa is looking for a new title sponsor but does not think that the ING pull out will have any effect. The 2009 race should be bigger than last year.

Tara Quinn-Smith, a member of the Brooks Canada Marathon Project (BCMP), was the women's Canadian champion and placed fourth internationally at the ING Ottawa Marathon with a time of 2:33:57 in her debut in the marathon distance. The twenty-eight-year-old and her husband Andrew Smith, with a time of 2:19:58, qualified for the Berlin World Championships in August 2009. There were five long-distance runners from High Park's 'Marathon House,' a residential program for competitive runners vying for the Olympics, who competed in Ottawa. The Brooks Canada Marathon Project is in it's second year offering lodging for its runners as well as medical and travel support and performance-based financial incentives due to a $1.5-million commitment from Brooks Canada founders.

Asmae Leghazoui won the women's marathon title in her first marathon on the ING Ottawa Marathon course. She finished with a commanding five minute win over the second place finisher, and a new course record. Leghazoui's new course record was set with a time of 2:28:43. The previous record, established by Lioudmilla Kortchaguina in 2006, was 2:29:42. Cheruiyot won the mens ING Ottawa Marathon in 2 hours 10 minutes and 59 seconds.

Defending champion David Cheruiyot won the the 2008 ING Ottawa Marathon in a 2:10:59 to earn US $15,000. Solomon Molla was runner-up in a 2:11:04. In the women's race Asmae Leghazoui debuting in the marathon distance finished in a 2:28:43.9 collecting $15,000 prize money. Elsa Kireeva was second in 2:33:45 and Kebebush Haile was third in 2:33:47.
