Kenyan Christopher Cheboibich held of last year's champion - countryman Luke Kibet - to win Saturday's Country Music Marathon in Nashville, TN. He won in 2:13:27. Aurica Buia of Romania took the women's field in 2:34:40. The runners survived a hot day - it reached a high of 83 degrees - and more than a dozen of the 6000 contestants had to be taken by ambulance to a local hospital

Aurica Buia of Romania, 31, beat last year's winning time and all comers to take the women's field of the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, TN, on Saturday. But it wasn't all that easy. Buia suffered a painful calf that required her to stop twice during the race to stretch, though still finishing in 2:34:40, almost two minutes ahead of second place Ramilia Burangulova, 39, of Russia.

Patrick Doak, who lost the use of his legs at age 10 in a gun accident, won what was a two-man race in the wheelchair division of Saturday's Country Music Marathon in 1:59:19. Doak said he was disppointed the race had only two wheelchair competitors compared with a dozen last year.

A strong field of Kenyan runners is expected to dominate the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, but with prize money only for the top five, many will have traveled a long way with no payoff. Still, even small prize money can mean a world of difference to the runners from this impoverished country.
