The first ever Route 66 Mother Road Marathon is scheduled for October 3, 2009. The race will cover the famed route from Miami, Oklahoma to Joplin, Missouri. The race organizers expect to attract more than one thousand participants.

The 21-year old who collapsed and died during events at the Route 66 marathon, Kjell Anders Tovander, was a student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was looking forward to a life with a family and children according to an interview with his sister.

Jerry Faulkner has been focusing on the Route 66 Marathon for months. Faulkner was running well over one-hundred mile weeks leading up to the 26.2 mile. He won the race in 2 hours and 27 minutes despite strong winds and a challenging 23 mile.

The mens and womens course records were broken at Sunday's Route 66 Marathon but the great day of running was overshadowed by the death of 21 year old man who collapsed while running the half-marathon.
