This year's Valley of the Sun Marathon in Mesa, AZ, received good marks from the nearly 2,000 finishers despite some internal problems among the organizers. Paul Wenneborg was the overall winner, coming in at 2:27:02. Kelly Melfy of Mesa was the women's marathon winner in 2:56:50.

Pilkington is favorite in 1st Valley of the Sun Marathon to be held in Mesa, Arizona

Paul Pilkington, the fastest U.S. runner in the 2000 New York City Marathon and winner of the L.A. Marathon in 1994, is favored to win the inaaugural Valley of the Sun Marathon in Phoenix this Sunday. Event organizers expect the marathon to become an elite regional event despite the proximity of the Desert Classic Marathon staged only 20 miles away on the same day.
