Following a disappointing nineteenth place at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Women's Marathon Team Trials, Mary Akor won the Vancouver Marathon in 2:37:54. Her finish was nearly seven minutes faster than her 2004 win and her 2006 and 2007 efforts when she was second in 2:45.33 and 2:44.22, respectively. Claudia Camargo having suffered from shin splints came in second in 2:54:53. Ellie Greenwood of Vancouver was top Canadian in third in 2:55:28.

Defending Champion Thomas Omwenga wins the 2008 Bank of Montreal Vancouver Marathon in a 2:15:59 In the women's race Mary Akor beat out defending champion Claudia Carmago to win in a time of 2:37:54.

Defending Champion Thomas Omwenga, a 2:10 marathoner who battled dehydration to win last year's Vancouver Marathon finishing in 2:25:23, will return along with women's race winner Claudia Carmargo. Omwenga's competition, Mohammed Awol and William Serem, will not be participating in the 2008 Vancouver Marathon due to visa problems. Camargo is expected to be challenged by Yolanda Mercado and Mary Akor who had just completed the 2008 US Olympic Trials two weeks ago.
