Yakima resident Jose Garcia didn't know if he could compete in Saturday's Yakima River Canyon Marathon just four months ago. Suffering from anemia, he found it exhausting just stretching for a workout. With help from iron pills, however, the cross country coach and first-time marathoner won the race in 2:29:41 after setting a blazing pace. Marlene Farrell took 13th and the women's field in 3:10:00.

Running With American Pride at the Yakima River Canyon Marathon

Jose Nebrida, originally of the Phillipines, will carry the American flag this Saturday as he runs the Yakima River Canyon Marathon. Nebrida has carried the flag in races since September 11th and will continue to do so over the next 18 months - once in each state and Washington DC.
