Wilson Kipsang Will Seek To Defend
His New York City Maraton Title

The New York City Marathon has the money and prestige to pay for and attract many of the best marathoners in the world. And race organizers take pride in trying to be the best and most competitive marathon in the world, at least in the Fall season. In the field are five men who have run sub 2:05 for the marathon,
Similar to past years, the New York City Marathon has assembled many of the world's top marathoners. The field includes Wilson Kipsang, who previously held the marathon world record with his run in Berlin in 2013. Kipsang has run a sub 2:05 marathon more than anyone in history and has run faster than any other entrant a staggering four times (2:03:23 1st Berlin 2013, 2:03:42 1st Frankfurt 2011, 2:04:29 1st London 2014, 2:04:44 1st London 2014). Kipsang's personal best of 2:03:23 is more than a minute faster than the three other sub 2:05 entrants.
However, unlike many other major marathons, the New York City Marathon does not have pacers. The lack of pacemakers allows some of the best championship style competitors to have a real shot of winning. One of those is Yemane Tsegay, who won the silver medal at the 2015 World Championships Men's Marathon in August, but also has a sub 2:05 PR on his resume. Tsegay also placed second at the Boston Marathon this spring and is certainly a contender in New York. Tsegay and Lelisa Desisa have competed against each other twice this year. Desisa took the win at the Boston Marathon, but finished behind Tsegay at the World Championships (7th).
The New York City Marathon course is known for being challenging and cross country greats have had success in the Big Apple. That leads us to believe that Geoffrey Kamworor may be a tough man to beat on Sunday. Kamworor won the World Half-Marathon Championships in 2014, won the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and finished runner-up behind Mo Farah at the World Championships 10,000m on the track. Kamworor has run one marathon in 2:06, which shows he has the range to make history in New York.
Meb Keflezeghi, who turned 40 earlier this year, brings his experience to New York as the leadingerican contender. Meb finished 8th at the Boston Marathon this past spring and has run a 1:03:02 half-marathon at the end of September, which shows he is in good form and cannot be discounted as a contender for a spot on the podium. The nexterican male contender, Nick Arciniaga, finished 7th a year ago in 2:11:47. Arciniaga has run under 2:12 for the marathon four times and will look to improve upon his performance in New York a year ago.
