A Race Like No Other
The 41st Running of the New York City Marathon - The Women's Race
by John Elliott
In some years, it's easy to pick who would be the top women finishers at the New York City Marathon. But the 2010 field left us speechless - the race could go to anyone. The pundits would give the edge to those who had succeeded before at New York: Derartu Tulu, Ludmila Petrova and Salina Kosgei. Others had proven their mettle at the Boston Marathon: Teyba Erkesso with her strong win and Tatyana Pushkareva who nearly caught Erkesso at Boston. In the field were also a couple of debutante marathoners who could finish well and/or fail: Mary Keitany and the new American hope Shalane Flanagan. But it would be hard to tell what would happen.
The race started at a relatively slow pace - with the largest group of women running together that we have ever seen at New York. Nineteen women were together at that halfway mark in 1:15:47. Inga Abitova (2nd at the 2010 London Marathon) and Teyba Erkesso (the 2010 Boston Marathon champion) were leading, but the pace suggesting a 2:32 finish was still too slow. Through the 59th Street Bridge and onto First Avenue, the pack remained mostly unbroken. Tatyana Pushkareva who had run so well in Boston was the first to fade at mile 15 - her manager had told us that the Russian Federation had wanted her to run the European Championships and that New York was too close, that must have been true. Derartu Tulu and Salina Kosgei were the next to fade off the pack by mile 19.

The race began in earnest into mile 22. Up First Avenue, the two debutantes started to move. Mary Keitany increased the pace and Shalane Flanagan was right there also leading. Mile 22 at 5:20 and Mile 23 at 5:13 were the fastest miles thus far in the race and only Edna Kiplagat could stick with the two. The group of three looked strong and by mile 24, the fourth runner, Inga Abitova, was fourteen seconds back.
Edna Kiplagat and Mary Keitany upped the pace further into mile 25 and Shalane Flanagan fell back. Flanagan told us that she thought she would be relegated to third place, "but I just thought if I could really just compose myself. The finish line, it just takes a few steps to get in front of someone... I don't know if Mary had seen the course that well, but I knew it. I knew what I could do over the last bit, so I just knew I had to keep it close to her."
As Kiplagat continued to push the pace and run away, Flanagan proved that she is heroic and did what she knew she could. With just under a mile to go, Flanagan moved into second place as the distance caught up to Keitany.

| Kiplagat, in a fitting follow-up to her victory in May at the Los Angeles Marathon, crossed the finish line alone in 2:28:20. Flanagan finished in second place in 2:28:40. Flanagan was nervous about the marathon when she spoke to us earlier in the week, but immediatly after finishing she was already talking about how great she felt, how her team had prepared her well for the race and what she might do differently to win the race... next time. Keitany looked terrible as her legs seemed to fail her as she finished in third place in 2:29:01, still a great performance in her debut marathon.
The New York City Marathon surprised all of us - who could have expected the three top women to be Kiplagat, Flanagan and Keitany when the field was filled with past champions and runners-up of all of the major marathons?
With the New York City Marathon also standing as the USA Woman's Marathon Championships, Shalane Flanagan also received the title of USA Marathon Champion. Katie McGregor was second American in 2:31:01 (11th in the NYC Marathon) and Kathy Newberry was third American in 2:35:23 (17th in the NYC Marathon).
