The tenth and final running of the Gasparilla Marathon had nearly ideal running conditions with temperatures in the mid-40s for the 6 am start unlike the previous nine years with hot humid weather or cold and windy conditions.

Lieutenan Colonel Sam Armwood ran the last Gasparilla Marathon on a treadmill while stationed in Afghanistan. He planned to join his wife, Amy, for the race but was deployed with the Air Force in January.

   Long Journey Ends With Victory In Gasparilla Marathon For Wilson Chepkwony (St. Petersburg Times)
Wilson Chepkwony won the tenth and final Gasparilla Marathon after running a race the weekend before in Jacksonville Florida and traveling more than 24 hours in bus to hop in a plane to fly to Florida. He won by more than five minutes.

   Chepkwony, Gacek Win Gasparilla Marathon (Tampa Bay Online)
Wilson Chepkwony won the overall marathon title at the Gasparilla Distance Classic in Tampa Bay just seven days after running a marathon in Jacksonville. His winning time of 2 hours 24 minutes and 48 seconds was seven minutes slower than his time from one week ago.

The Tampa Bay area is bracing for another record cold front. Runners are putting in final preparations for the Gasparilla Distance Classic and hoping that the rain will hold off for race day.

Six runners will run their "final voyage" of the Gasparilla Marathon this weekend. Only six runners have done all nine of the 26.2 mile events in Tampa Bay and the 2010 running will be the last marathon event included with the Gasparilla Distance Classic.

   Miramar Man Overcomes Wind, Rain To Win Gasparilla Marathon (MSNBC)
Ronnie Holassie fought through wind, rain and chilly temperatures to win his second Gasparilla Marathon title with a time of 2 hours 27 minutes and 56 seconds. He was nearly fifteen minutes faster than runner-up Chad Byler of Rochester New York
 
   No One Challenges Kraft in Gasparilla Marathon (MSNBC)
Nina Kraft of Germany seemed to power through the wet and rainy conditions of the Gasparilla Marathon on Sunday. Kraft, who has won Iron Man races in Florida and Brazil was the overall women's marathon winner with a time of 2 hours 47 minutes and 40 seconds and placed fourth overall.

   Athlete Makes U.S. Trials in Last Ditch Effort (Race Results Weekly)
The winner of the 2008 Walt Disney World Marathon Melanie Peters who failed to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Women's Marathon wouldn't let it discourage her. Twenty-eight days later she ran the Gasparilla Distance Classic Marathon and finished fifth in a 2:46:45, making the Trials qualifying time. Although Peters was taken to the medical area in a wheelchair, she is looking forward to the trials in April.

   Peters Takes Gasparilla Women's Marathon (Tampa Bay Online)
Missing the U.S. Olympic Women's Marathon Trials by just 29 seconds at last month's Disney Marathon, St. Petersburg's Melanie Peters is preparing for the 2008 Gasparilla Marathon. The U.S. women's B qualifying time is 2:47. Peters, a 24-year-old Michigan native, crossed the finish line of Sunday's race with fifteen seconds to spare.

   Distance Races Run Into Glitch (Tampa Bay Online)
Tampa race organizers for the Gasparilla Distance Classic, which includes the Bank of America Marathon, are thinking of pulling the plug on using the new timing system they have slated for race day. Contracted to use Michigan-based SAI Timing, SAI Timing's new electronic timing device failed to work at the 2007 Honolulu Marathon leading to a runner and race director's worst nightmare. Race officials may switch back to using Championchip since more than 17,000 runners are expected to participate in race weekend.

   Floridians Have Shot To Share Gasparilla Marathon Purse (Tampa Bay Online)
In order to promote competitive distance running Tampa's Gasparilla Marathon officials will offer prize money for the top three Florida finishers. This is in response to the abscence of Floridians in the recent U.S. Olympic men's marathon trials and only three qualifiers from the state competing at the women's trials.

After 26 miles of Sunday's chilly and often blustery Bank of America Marathon, the race was decided in the final two-tenths of a mile when two gifted Ethiopian runners squared off in an all-out sprint.

   Russians Weather Elements, Field at Bank of America Marathon (TBO)
Running in rainy and cool conditions that worsened as the wind picked up in the race's second half, Strijakov finished in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 34 seconds, winning the marathon.
 
   Sultanova-Zhadnova Dominates Women's Bank of America Marathon (TBO)
The 44-year old Russian won the event in 2 hours, 41 minutes and 26 seconds, beating the rest of the women's field by almost seven minutes. It's her second consecutive Gasparilla marathon victory.

There's a new individual Outback Steakhouse Military Division in the 15K, 5K, marathon and half marathon. The Outback Steakhouse Military Division will be open to active, retired and former military personnel.

   Day Anything but Routine for Hops Winners (St. Petersburgh Times)
With a steady pace of 5:37 per mile, Jeff Fabian won the Hops Marathon in an unexpected time of 2:27:35. Fabian says he doesn't run all that much, but he still managed to beat Richard Roberts with over a three minute lead. St. Petersburgh's Kim Donaldson took lead in the women's race for her city in a time of 3:01:18.

   Phillips, Teats emerge victorious in Hops Marathon by the Bay in Tampa (St. Petersburg Times)
Christy Phillips of St. Petesburg took the women's field in the Hops Marathon by the Bay in Tampa, Fla., on Sunday, crossing the line in 2:54:55, despite hot temperatures. Tony Teats of Oldsmar took the men's field in 2:30:06 as he starts working to qualify for the 2004 Olympics.
 
   Marathon Man finishes with flourish in Tampa (St. Petersburgh Times)
Jerry Dunn, 54, who completed his record 200th run of 2000 on Sunday in the Hops Marathon by the Bay in Tampa, ran his fastest time of the year, 4:05:30. Next up: the Run for the Lungs charitable race.
