"Fast Downhill Course for PR and/or BQ" (about: 2019)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Huntsville Utah Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I live and train at about 800 feet, so I was worried about the effects of altitude when I arrived in Utah a few days before the race. Luckily, the altitude did not seem to affect me at all during the first half of the race--the cardiovascular benefits of running downhill must have offset the altitude. Since the course seemed relatively easy at this point, I opted to cruise and bank the extra time for when I knew it would get harder at the end. Just after the half marathon point, the course levels off quite a bit and becomes more flat to rolling hills (yes, that includes slight uphills). It was then that I began to feel the effects of altitude and really started gasping for air. I slowed down significantly in the second half, but had banked so much time in the first half that I still PR'd and earned my BQ! Be prepared for virtually no crowd support other than the aid stations (which were plentiful, well stocked and fantastic!) and 200 yards from the finish line. This did not bother me in the canyon because there was so much visual beauty, but once we exited the canyon and were running on long country roads with no one around, I could have used more support. Overall, great race for a small town and I highly recommend it!

"Be warned, downhill drop" (about: 2016)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Huntsville Utah Marathon
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Everything about this marathon was great, except for one thing that no one mentions. The downhill is worse than what you think. The elevation drop is so bad your legs start to hurt by mile 10. You have to break or run way too fast, and your legs suffer. If you live close and train running downhill, you will be fine. If you don't, then I would not run this race. I'm a 3 year BQ, and BQ'd on this race, but could not walk for 3 days after, my legs hurt that bad. Just keep that in mind, the youtube video does not do the downhill justice.

"Nice course - well organized" (about: 2015)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I really had a good time with this race. Packet pickup was very easy, and bussing to the start went off without a hitch. There was a large tent at the start to keep warm in, but it was not needed this year. The only thing that I would like changed is the start time. The race started at 9am, and the Huntsville area was in the middle of a heat wave. Running in the sun in the heat for the last half was tough and an earlier start would help with that. Overall, I really enjoyed everything.

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Had a great time running this marathon even with the heat. I should have listened to J and C years ago when they told me to run this. Very scenic course and lots of food at the finish.

"All-around great running experience" (about: 2013)
50+ previous marathons
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I particularly loved that the buses that took us to the start were allowed to stay an extra ten minutes so we could stay warmer that much longer. That is a rarity for a race. The volunteers were great, and the course was beautiful.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I was very impressed with the quality of the organization. It was a beautiful day. The volunteers, aid stations, and scenery couldn't have been better. At mile 20, after all the downhill, getting the flat part of the course was especially tough.

"Beautiful, Challenging, Organized" (about: 2013)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Great course to keep your eyes and mind on things other than the physical challenges you experience on a long run. Well organized race from packet pick-up to bus to bag drop and pick up at the end. Positive and encouraging volunteers and great aid stations. Not too crowded. A bit more room at the top while waiting for the start would be appreciated. Keep this race running!

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is a gorgeous course. The Monte Cristo canyon is wonderful with the fall colors. It's a nice downhill without being too steep and the organization is great! Nice shirt and medal this year too.

"Beautiful, well supported race." (about: 2013)

| 1 Huntsville Utah Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Great downhill course with lots of aid stations. I thought the 9am start was great. You run through a mountain setting the entire event, which is great unless you want big crowd cheering you the whole way. |
