The Modesto Marathon, set for March 23, 2025, continues its tradition of promoting health and community engagement in California’s Central Valley. Established to encourage fitness, the event also supports local initiatives like the Teens Run Modesto program, which mentors youth in goal-setting and physical fitness.
The marathon is renowned for its flat and fast course, making it ideal for runners aiming for personal bests or qualifying times for prestigious races like the Boston Marathon. The route starts in downtown Modesto, winds through historic, tree-lined neighborhoods, passes Modesto Junior College’s west campus, and extends into the picturesque countryside adorned with orchards, offering participants a blend of urban and rural scenery.
In recent years, the event has seen a steady increase in participation. In 2023, there were 2,133 participants across all race categories, with 299 completing the full marathon. The following year, 2024, saw a slight uptick, with 2,162 participants and 343 marathon finishers. This growth reflects the marathon’s rising popularity among both local and visiting runners.
The event offers various race categories to accommodate different fitness levels:
- Marathon (26.2 miles): Participants tackle the full course with a 7-hour time limit.
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles): Runners experience half the marathon distance, enjoying similar scenic routes.
- 10K (6.2 miles) and 5K (3.1 miles): These shorter distances cater to both beginners and seasoned runners seeking a quicker challenge.
To ensure runner safety and comfort, the marathon course features 12 aid stations, the half marathon includes 6 stations, and the 10K has 1 station. Each station is equipped with basic first aid supplies, and medical support is available throughout the course and at the finish line.
All finishers receive a commemorative medal celebrating their achievement. Additionally, awards are presented to the top three male and female participants overall, as well as in various age divisions. The current course records stand as a testament to the event’s competitive spirit:
- Marathon Male: 2:16:45 (2019) by CJ Albertson, 25, Fresno
- Marathon Female: 2:39:04 (2015) by Anna Bretan, 30, Berkeley
Beyond the race itself, the Modesto Marathon fosters community involvement. Proceeds benefit the Teens Run Modesto program, which challenges area youth, especially those at risk, to experience the benefits of goal-setting, character development, adult mentoring, and improved physical fitness through a structured training program culminating in the completion of the Modesto Marathon.
Participants consistently praise the event for its organization, supportive volunteers, and the unique experience of running through Modesto’s diverse landscapes. The combination of a well-structured course and community support makes the Modesto Marathon a standout event in the running calendar.
The 2025 Modesto Marathon promises to deliver an exceptional experience for runners of all levels. With its flat course, comprehensive support, and community-centric approach, it stands as a testament to Modesto’s commitment to promoting health, fitness, and unity.
