First Marathon: Edmonton Festival Marathon, 2001
My first marathon was the Edmonton Festival Marathon on May 20, 2001. It was a really special experience because I ran the race with my dad (Rick Hooper) and Uncle (Peter Hooper). There were times when I thought the old men would leave me behind, but we ended up finishing together in a respectable 3:29. Not too shabby for a skinny kid and two old guys! It was a cold and windy day, but the course was great (same course that will be used for the World Track and Field Championships in August 2001) and the cheering family and friends helped a lot. I was never too sure I’d make the finish line upright, but the support of my dad and uncle as well as the rest of the 3:30 pace group (thanks running room) pulled me through. I was a great experience, and a day that I can guarantee I will never forget.
