Over the week of March 17-23, 2025, several marathon events showcased remarkable athletic performances across the United States.
At the Bataan Memorial Death March, Douglas Tumminello and Eowyn Dalbec posted winning times of 3:07:43 and 3:13:08 respectively. This event, held at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, was the largest of the week, drawing over 2,600 participants in honor of the WWII soldiers who endured the original Bataan Death March – a powerful blend of athletic challenge and remembrance.
Gulf Coast Series (FL, MS, LA, TX – March 17–20, 2025)
Remarkably, Ricky Whitaker participated in marathons across four states in four days, achieving top-three finishes in each:
- Florida: 3rd place with 3:50:50
- Mississippi: 1st place with 4:17:29
- Louisiana: 1st place with 3:56:13
- Texas: 1st place with 4:06:36
Whitaker is on a mission to complete marathons in all 50 states before his 40th birthday, inspiring many with his dedication and perseverance.
Oakland Marathon Running Festival – Oakland, CA (March 23, 2025)
In the men’s race, Joseph Grovers secured victory with a time of 2:44:46, showcasing remarkable endurance. Notably, Grovers is a dedicated community volunteer, organizing local running events to promote health and wellness. The women’s race saw Kelly Goswamy finish first in 3:32:50; she is also a nutritionist who advocates for balanced diets tailored to athletes.
Redwood Trail Run (Spring) – Oakland, CA (March 22, 2025)
Trail enthusiast Chris Deming dominated the men’s race, finishing in 3:41:56. Deming is known for his environmental advocacy, particularly in preserving local trail systems. Rosalie Chan led the women’s race with a time of 5:03:22; she is also a tech journalist who covers emerging technologies in Silicon Valley.
Modesto Marathon – Modesto, CA (March 23, 2025)
Michael Mrgudic led the men’s category with an impressive 2:32:00 finish. Beyond his running prowess, Mrgudic is a high school teacher who integrates physical fitness into his curriculum to encourage student health. In the women’s division, Eve Schaeffer claimed the top spot with a time of 3:17:44; she is also an accomplished pianist who performs at local community events.
Napa Valley Trail Marathon – Calistoga, CA (March 22, 2025)
Brandon Costa took the men’s title with a swift 2:42:34 finish. Costa is a professional chef specializing in farm-to-table cuisine, emphasizing local Napa Valley produce. In the women’s race, Bryn Miller finished first in 4:27:58; she is a dedicated public school teacher who integrates outdoor education into her teaching methodology.
