Shalane Flanagan Crowned Champion
of 2017 NYC Marathon

The New York City Marathon is one of the richest races in the world and has a commitment to putting on a newsworthy and exciting race. Featured in the race for 2017 are the top three male finishers from the 2016 race and the woman who has won the New York City Marathon in each of the prior three years… Also in the race are 3 Olympic medalists, and thirteen previous champions of the New York City Marathon. Beyond those favored to compete for the win, the New York City Marathon also does a great job of showcasing and supporting American running talent and a number of American distance runners will server to round out the fields. Chief among the Americans will be Meb Keflezighi, a past NYC Champion, who will be running his final competitive marathon; and also Shalane Flanagan, arguably America’s best currently-running female marathoner.

Here – for the elite race – you’ll find full writeups on all aspects of the elite races, starter lists, past competitor lists and much more. You’ll also find schedules, course information and history that are of interest to those who just want to learn more about the event.

If you’re running or watching a friend/family member who is running, you’ll definitely want to view and print out the pace guide which will help you know when you or your friend will arrive at the different points on the course – mandatory information [works best if you plug in your friend’s race number!].

Visit these pages often and tell your friends about them….

Elite Athletes Past Performances
These men and women have met before at the marathon in various places. This page shows those races where two or more of the registered athletes have competed against each other. It’s sometimes about the prior times these athletes have achieved, but it’s also about how well they do head-to-head in the same race, in the same atmosphere.

 Movies and Books
In conjunction with the 2008 marathon, there was the publication of an extraordinary book and extraordinary video showing the New York City Marathon. Both were and remain excellent, so we’ll reprise our writeups from the 2008 race here:

Run For Your Life (DVD)
Run For Your Life is the story of New York City Marathon founder Fred Lebow, the story of the New York City Marathon and the story of the running boom. It’s compelling, interesting and humorous – and the editing is superb.

A Race Like No Other
Now available in Paperback
If you don’t run the New York City Marathon and instead read Liz Robbins’ book, you’ll know more about the race, the people and the city than you could see in ten outings on the course (except for the feeling of hitting the wall, that can’t be replicated in a book – ouch). Flawlessly written and crafted and very readable. Well done Liz.

 What Others Are Writing…
We wish we had a bigger staff. We wish we could write all of the articles we’d like to write (and there are a lot of them). Fortunately, others are writing about the New York City Marathon – present and past. Here are links to Press Releases and News Articles – not written by us, but at least we’ve found these for you…

Past Years…
MarathonGuide.com launched in March 2000 and each year since 2001 we’ve been at the New York City Marathon covering the event. With so many athletes returning each year, past races often provide insights into the current year’s events and personalities. At what mile do the runners typically make their moves? Which runners have been successful with an early breakaway and which have failed? The answers to these and many other questions can be found in the past years’ races.
