Runners looking for scenic miles and wide-open views will find both at the inaugural Billings Skyline Races, taking place Sunday, May 31, 2026, in Billings, Montana. Set on the towering sandstone cliffs known as the Rimrocks, this brand-new race invites runners to explore one of Montana’s most iconic landscapes while enjoying a thoughtfully designed course through the city’s expanding trail system.

Participants can choose between two distances: a Half Marathon (13.1 miles) or a 30K (18.6 miles). Both courses offer moderate elevation changes and are run primarily on paved paths, making the race approachable for first-time distance runners while still providing a rewarding challenge for experienced competitors.

What makes the Billings Skyline Races special is the scenery. From the Rimrocks above the city, runners will enjoy sweeping views across the Yellowstone Valley with the distant Beartooth Mountains visible on clear spring mornings. Sections of the course follow the sandstone ridge along Skyline Trail and Skyway Trail where the vast Montana landscape stretches out in every direction.

The Half Marathon begins with a memorable start high on the Rimrocks. Runners are bused to the Skyline Trail before beginning their journey along the ridge and finishing at the Yellowstone River valley. The course winds through scenic trails and quiet roads before finishing at Two Moon Park, a beautiful riverside setting that provides the perfect place to celebrate the finish.

The 30K course begins and ends at Two Moon Park, taking runners on a loop through Billings’ well developed trail network. Along the way, participants will experience rolling terrain, open prairie views, and a final shaded stretch along the Alkali Creek Trail as they return to the finish line.

To keep the event welcoming and personal, the Half Marathon will be limited to just 200 runners, allowing participants to enjoy a relaxed race atmosphere and strong support along the course. The 30K distance will remain open to additional runners looking to tackle the longer challenge. Aid stations will be located approximately every 1.5 to 2 miles, fully stocked with water, electrolytes, and nutrition. Volunteers and race staff will be stationed throughout the course, bringing energy and encouragement that reflect Montana’s well-known hospitality.

Whether runners are chasing a personal best, preparing for a fall marathon, or simply looking for a scenic destination race, the Billings Skyline Races offer a memorable way to experience the beauty of Big Sky Country. On May 31, runners won’t just be racing—they’ll be helping launch a brand-new Montana running tradition.
