Oh the Hill(s)
As many have said, oh the hills. I knew it was a hilly course going in so shame on me for having unrealistic performance expectations. The 1st 5K of the course is relatively flat followed by a MASSIVE downhill that gets you about a mile at near sea level. And then you climb. And Climb. And Climb...for about 8 miles. I feel for anyone who did the full because they got to enjoy that not once but twice. Post race was pretty weak IMO, no electrolyte solution like Gatorade just water with bagels and fruit.

Hills, hills, hills
If you want to qualify for Boston, this is not the course for you. Too many steep hills.

Great organization, but miss the old course
2015 was my first time running the new course (half only); I had run the old course several times in my attempt to improve my marathon time and qualify for Boston. The old course was a fast, flat run mostly along the Erie Canal. About eight miles of it were on dirt/crushed stone, which actually seemed to help my feet not get as sore as they normally do. The new course is very scenic, but it is also extremely hilly, not just rolling hills but steep inclines that you almost need to walk up. It is a double-loop marathon, and after running the half, I couldn't imagine having to turn around and do another loop. I might consider running the half again, but I would never do the full marathon. I wish that this course had been added as an additional half marathon for Rochester runners, rather than replacing the Rochester Marathon course along the canal. However, I do like that Fleet Feet is now running the race - they always do a great job keeping everything organized and fun.

Too hilly and crowded.
If you want to try to qualify for Boston, this race is not for you. Very crowded the first five miles. The hills were too much. The course they had along the Erie Canal the year before was much better.

Scenic and hilly
Overall a good race variety of scenery, water, bridges, boats, trees, bike trails, residential areas, and even a cemetery. Lots of hills, Double loop with a little added. VERY crowded at beginning; I was walking as fast as the runners were running; it was that congested. Should start the Half marathoners later. Not enough porta potties (usually only one) at aid stations. Host hotel had 3 pm. checkout. Nice post-race pizza, chocolate milk. Super friendly volunteers. Had race day packet pickup since Expo closed at 4 p.m. day before.

Hilly, scenic, not a good full experience
The Pros:
- Course is scenic with lots of different scenery changes (boardwalk, trail, city)
-Course was well-marked
- Water stops on second half of the course were good.
Cons:
- With some minor exceptions, the full course was just repeating the half course. For me, it was mentally tough to run a big hill on mile 7 knowing that I was going to do it all over again at mile 20.
- For the first half, the water stops were disorganized and overwhelmed. I couldn't even get water around mile 6 as the volunteers were completely unprepared for the number of runners. That said, it was fine on the second half of the race since instead of 50 runners there were about 1 or 2 per water stop.
-As a full runner you were basically on your own for the second half. I was told of 3,200 runners, 2,800 were halfers. The rest made up the full and the relay. When I was running on the second half, everyone around me seemed to have a relay bib.
-Low spectator support on the second half of the course.
Overall, I would not run this race again as a full. If you are prepared for the hills and want to run the half only, I think it's a good race.

Well Organized Fun Regional Race
This year was the first featuring a new management team and a new course. I for one enjoyed the new course and was impressed with this race.
As a visitor to Rochester I found all the on-course volunteers, marshalls, police and spectators to be very polite & warm, the course was scenic and not as tough as I feared (there are several hills).
Some of the friendliest fellow-runners as well, everyone encouraging each-other.
Best: free parking near finish line, free on-course photographers, free shuttle to start-line, one of the best start-line MC's I've ever heard, good finish line vibe. Informative website, smooth registration & same-day bib p/u.
To be improved: water stands too small, easy to confuse water & Gatorade.

Very Nice, Enjoyable
Enjoyed East Avenue, canal portion. Run on cinders from about mile 9 to mile 17. Remainder of course is paved. Organization nice, people friendly. Plentiful water stops every 2 miles or so. Good size, not crowded with thousands of runners.
Only negative is Fluid electrolyte drink tastes awful.
Enjoyed very much.

Outstanding
It wasn't my best performance, but I still had a great time.
Pros:
- The Erie Canal portion of the course was beautiful. The leaves on some of the trees were just starting to turn.
- This was one of the best organized races of any size I've ever run.
- Water stations were plentiful and super-well organized.
- Volunteers were helpful and enthusiastic.
- They started us 15 minutes ahead of the half, so there was no crowding.
- For a race of this size (only about 700 for the full, not counting the relay teams), I was impressed by how many spectators turned out early to cheer along the city streets (some even came down to cheer at access points along the canal).
- The relay transition areas were right alongside the course, so the relay teams became extra-huge groups of cheering spectators ... a particularly nice surprise on the canal path.
- Plentiful chocolate milk, water, pizza, bananas, and donut holes at the finish.
- Bag drop and pickup was a breeze.
- Host hotel was very nice and a good deal. They even put out post-race bananas at the checkout desk.
Cons:
- I didn't like the Fluid energy drink they used, but what made it worse was that some of the kids at the water stops were yelling that they had Gatoraid. I hope they correct that in the future.
- I tried running with a pace group, but the pacer's splits were all over the place. I expected a steadier pace.
General info:
- A couple miles on the city streets have what I would describe as gentle, rolling hills. You pick up the Erie Canal path around mile 9 and it is almost perfectly flat from there to a short climb up to the Ford Street Bridge. Once over the bridge, it's flat again.
- Portions of the canal path are dirt and gravel. It rained the night before the race, and there were several large puddles in the path. You can run around them in the grass, but expect to get a little mud on your shoes if it's wet.
- Upstate NY is breezy ... pretty much all the time. That breeze typically comes out of the west, so you have to run straight into it for most of your trek along the canal.
- Long stretches of the canal are not readily accessible, thus, there are no spectators other than the volunteers at the water stations for several miles. If you're a runner that likes cheering crowds, especially as a motivator over the second half of a race, this might not be your style.

Great small marathon that I recommend!
This was a really nice marathon:
Good stuff:
1) nice medal
2) nice shirt
3) very organized expo
4) friendly volunteers
5) very pretty course (especially East Avenue)...Erie Canal was nice also.
6) Plenty of aid stations along the way
7) Excellent traffic control
8) Chocolate milk at finish (my fav)
9) The start was great...full marathon starts 15 minutes before half, so never crowded.
10) Nice finish line...lots of cheering and they call out your name.
I went to Letchworth State Park (about a one-hour drive south of Rochester) the day after the race...strongly recommend going there, as it is beautiful!

Best of the 5 I've run so far
Loved the Rochester marathon. Small - just the way I like it. Just enough enthusiastic spectators. Loved running along the Historic Erie canal through some neat little towns. Gravel was a nice break for my feet.

A wonderfully run small marathon!
I have run approximately 15 marathons and find the MVP to be a great event! The course is close to flat, with a few minor hills. The first portion is on the streets of Rochester. The roads are more suburbia than anything with a great deal of trees (very little direct sun) With about 2/3 of it on the Erie Canal path. The last mile or so is back on the streets. The parking is easy to access and there are numerous reasonably priced hotels in the area. This is a great run for the BQ Boston runner and the price is very reasonable for what you get! The volunteers did a fantastic job and did it with a smile!

decent race, but not a destination marathon
Pros:
Nice, mostly-flat course on city streets and 12 miles along the Erie canal (which is about 1/2 gravel and 1/2 paved)
Crowd support was better-than-expected for a small marathon
The Hyatt was a reasonably nice hotel, with friendly employees
Bag drop / pick-up was well-organized
Free massages at the end
Cons:
There's nothing for visitors to do in Rochester
The expo closed too early on Sat (4pm)
Unattractive race shirt and medal
Food at the end was poor
Faster marathoners will spend the last 6 miles passing by the 1/2 marathon walkers
some water stops weren't organized (the same volunteers had gatorade and water, one in each hand)
There aren't any race clocks along the course, but that's not an issue for anyone with a Garmin

Awesome well organized smaller marathon
I ran the Rochester half, my hometown race, in 2011. The course is mostly flat with a couple of bumps and inclines.
The course starts on the Andrews bridge and goes through downtown neighborhoods for a few miles. Wide streets with excellent traffic control by marshals and police. For the last several miles the half course merges with the final portion of the full marathon course that runs along the paved Erie canal and Genesee river paths. All races end with a downtown finish by the Frontier Field.
The event was very well organized. Nice expo that stayed open until late in the evening the day before.
Water stops were available, but I didn't end up needing them since it was cool out.
The weather that year was perfect, dry and cool.
Plenty of volunteers and spectators everywhere on the course. Although it's a small town, it's got an active running community and lots of people come out to (loudly) cheer.
I registered fairly late but still got a red long-sleeve cotton top. The registration fees were not high compared to other races.

Great flat and fast marathon
Ran this as my second marathon in an attempt to BQ for Boston '12. Weather was great (50ish at the start a little over 60 by the finish). Course was good - I like the section along the Erie that others are calling boring - but I'm glad that I rode the course a few days before to find out that there was 5.5 miles of gravel in the middle.
Water stop support was top notch and everything was plentiful as I went by. Gus were positioned after water/Gatorade which is tough if you want to take them right away.
Ran past a lot of half-marathon walkers in the last 4 miles of the course. I was all alone at that point, so it was tough to pace. Walkers were generally good about making room when they heard me coming though, which was nice.
Thanks Rochester - it was a well run marathon overall and everything I needed. Signed up for Boston '12 the next morning.

Wow! This is a superbly organized marathon. The course is great and scenic, running along the Erie canal, the hills are negligible, and the organization is stellar. Highly recommended!

Okay marathon
I thought the marathon was okay. The course is somewhat boring as you travel out against traffic to the Erie towpath and run it until about mile 24. It's nice but by mile 20 it's a little redundant. The last 2 miles you do nothing but tell half-marathon walkers that there is a runner coming. I ran this race on the back half of the Highlander cycle tour and would not consider running the just the marathon. Too many other fall marathons to choose from.

Another good year
I ran the half again this year. I have run as a relay team member twice and I have run the half 3 times. My wife ran as a relay team member for the first time this year. We had a great time. I may run the full marathon next year.
I feel that this was the best year yet. We had so much fun. The relay stations were crowded and exciting. I enjoy running down East Ave., on the canal, through the park and on the U of R campus. The people at the water stops where really fun and encouraging.
It just keeps getting better and better each year. I can't wait until next year.

Class Act! Rochester, You Rock!
This is my first Rochester Marathon, and my number 88 marathon. I loved it! Being skeptical about running for more than 10 miles on the Erie Canal Pathway, both from a support and a boredom prospective, I wrote to the race director. Greg replied to me and was very supportive and encouraging. I really did enjoy running on the canal pathway; it was so beautiful, had so much history, and there was plenty of support on the pathway from course marshals, water station volunteers, relay teams and spectators, and medical doctors! They were awesome! They talked to runners and offered words of encouragement.
The rest of the Rochester Marathon course was very nice. We ran on East Ave., with all the beautiful mansions and houses. Rochester Policemen did a great job controlling traffic; they also cheered the runners and shouted words of encouragement. Two policewomen were on the mound on the canal pathway, showing their support. I would like to thank bib # 83, Tom Butler, his running friend, and his wife for supporting me on the course when I was not feeling well. Thanks to Tom's wife for taking some of my running gear to the Fleet Feet baggage pick-up at the finish.
I highly recommend that everyone run Rochester. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency, a very luxurious hotel, with great service, for only $99 per night! We were given a late check-out to 3 p.m. I was sick to my stomach during and after the marathon; I took a nap, and sent my husband down to ask for late check-out to 3:30 p.m. It was honored. A pasta dinner at the Hyatt was great; the food and service was great. The manager, hostess, waitresses and waiters were so friendly and very professional. The salad was healthy and consisted of high-quality greens. NOT A PIECE OF WILTED GREEN!
I would like to run it again next year if I don't have a conflict with another marathon. We stopped and stayed Sunday night at Letchworth State Park (the Grand Canyon of the East), and hiked to the Upper Falls, Middle Falls and Lower Falls. It was so beautiful. I have lived in New York State for 39 years, and this was the first time that I visited Rochester and Letchworth State Park. I feel so lucky to have had the experience!

Good first marathon
This was my first marathon. The volunteers were great, the spectators wonderful, and the course was, well... a little boring. I didn't think it would get to me, but whoa. By mile 15 I was done with the Canal. Must have been the equivalence of a treadmill run. If you're planning on running this, just make sure you're prepared mentally for the stagnant scenery. All in all, though, it was a good first-marathon experience!

Well Organized, Well Marked, Friendly City
Had a great weekend in Rochester running this marathon (my 27th, and 19th state) and also visiting with some old friends (as I grew up in Rochester). After rain being forecasted most of the week, race morning started dry, then misted for awhile, then stopped, and the overcast skies made for perfect running temperature. I enjoyed the variety of the course - streets, bridges, canal trail, etc. The course was perfectly marked, patrolled, and marshaled. The water stations were plentiful and very well staffed with enthusiastic volunteers, even for this slower runner. The Hyatt Hotel was super - really appreciate the discounted rate and late check out in this fine hotel. The only one thing I would change would be to have the timing chips available at the packet pickup expo to eliminate the extra walking race morning. Overall, a great marathon I would wholeheartedly recommended it to anyone (unless you need a lot of crowd support, which I do not).

Well run, beautiful race - put chips in packet
I've run this every year since it started up again in Rochester and love this race. The organization is flawless. The course is beautiful and mostly flat. My only criticism is the one I make every year. Please, please, please, please put the chips in the pickup packets like most races do. It saves time and confusion at the morning activities. If you are concerned about not getting them back, then just take a credit card number as a deposit. Also, the strap is not the most comfortable thing to wear for 26.2 miles.

Wonderful Race
I ran the Rochester 1/2 on Sunday, and it was well organized, on a very scenic course and with awesome spectators. This is the first major race I've run in my own home town, so it was great to see so many familiar faces. The only problem I had was the lack of port-o-potties throughout the race. I had to stop of at Walgreens to go in the middle of the race, which was not fun. Other than that, it was a great race.

Great small marathon
I ran the half-marathon here last year and my first full this year.
Overall: a well run, smallish, flat and fast marathon.
The course: thumbs up. It's flat and fast. OK, there are a couple easy rolling hills in the first 10 miles, but they are more like bumps in the road. Flat after mile 10.
Tip: the couple of miles of gravel on the canal path can hurt your quads (only a little) if you run only on roads. But no biggie.
Organization: thumbs up. After last year's heat wave and water station problems, everything was perfect. I confess to skipping the expo and picking up the packet on race morning. No problems. Port-a-potty lines a bit long, but no big complaints. No idea about the hotel - I'm local.
The weather: thumbs up. Great this year (50ish in the am, 72F by noon).
The scenery: thumbs down (though that really depends on what you like). If you are a city person, you'll hate it. If you love pretty parks and nature, you'll like it.
Volunteers and spectators: thumbs up! It's not the race where two million people cheer you on. You (probably) won't get free beer from spectators. But the people who make it onto the canal make themselves heard and stay around for slowpokes like me.
All around: way cool.

Great, little, well run marathon
I ran this race in 2006 (its second year) and while I generally liked the race and the organization, I had a problem with the host hotel and the race director who inserted herself in the middle of a discussion about the accommodations.
Three years later, I think this race has really improved. The course is still fabulous (I may be biased - it's my hometown). While some find the canal towpath boring, I find it beautiful and serene. The race organization is improved.
The big pleasant surprise was the new (to me) host hotel! I simply cannot say enough about the Hyatt and how they accommodated the runners (my beef with the host hotel three years ago). When we asked for a late checkout we were informed that all participants already received a 3 p.m. check-out and they would supply us with extra towels on race day. After the race we found a card on the extra towels telling us if we needed more time to just call the front desk. I brought 8 friends from Houston and we were ALL impressed with the Hyatt. My coach has run over 60 marathons and ultras and he rated the Hyatt as number one in all the races he has run. Kudos to the Hyatt and the race organizers for making these arrangements!
I'll be back.

Nice Small Marathon
This was my first marathon, and it did not disappoint.
Plusses: While the course doesn't start out great, the long stretch along the Erie Canal was just beautiful; I found myself gazing off plenty of times. Crowd support, while scattered, was enthusiastic and the volunteers were fantastic. I liked the finish at Frontier Field.
Minuses: Too few port-a-johns! I had no chance at all to go before the race and had to duck into the woods when the call of nature hit - not cool. I didn't like that chip pick-up and bag drop-off were in different spots; that's stupid and a pain dragging an overnight bag. Also, the first part along a busy road stuck within cones was not really fun, but that's quibbling.
Overall, a great first 26.2 for me and I highly recommend it. While downtown Rochester is sort of dead, the city is surrounded by many fantastic areas and you should look around. Thanks to everyone for putting this on.

Great Race and Perfect Weather (2009)
Great race. It's well organized and continues to improve. Canal is a little boring, but it works. Nice, fairly flat race so you can run a good time. I qualified for Boston. (This was my ninth marathon.)

Interesting Marathon! Beautiful course!
I was not sure what to expect based on last year's comments. The course was beautiful and probably safer for those traveling in packs. Those of us alone for 2-3 miles as women were a little nervous. For those of us who don't finish in 3 or 4 hours, we were not fortunate enough to receive our medals; it has to be mailed to us, and that is VERY disappointing. The staff were very apologetic and I understand it was no fault of their own. It would have made the blow a little easier if I would have seen at least ONE photographer snapping a shot of me on the course!
Great support and encouragement from ALL of the kids who were serving the water and giving direction! They made the rough moments the best! This made the day less painful because of you. Thank you!

An excellent, small-city marathon
This event is a little-known gem, with great heart in a tired city. While the course may look as though it's flat and fast, my Garmin told me that for much of the 15 miles or so along the Erie Canal, there was an ever-so-slight incline. The male winner crossed the line in 2:36, which, to me, indicates it's nothing like CIM in Sacramento or Tucson. The expo is dinky, with nothing much to keep you there after you've picked up your race packet. Pre-race parking is excellent, as is timing chip pick-up, and there was good food at the end (pizza and hot dogs!!!). My only complaint, and I mean ONLY, is that the Erie Canal segment, which is most of the race, is deadly boring after 2-3 miles. I needed something else to look at. I am not one who needs cheering Chicago-style crowds, but there was practically no one out there saying stuff like, "Looking good" or "You're almost there." I made a five-day trip of it, including visits to Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and the jello museum. It was great fun. Here's hoping the event continues and helps revive a struggling city.

Class event. Thanks to volunteers and spectators!
It's so refreshing to see a marathon organization incorporate suggestions over the first few years, tweak the event, and come out with an even better product the next year. It seems like so many nowadays just care about taking your $90. Great job, Rochester! This is about as logistically easy as it gets. Only suggestion for next year is dump the outdated timing chip/ankle-biting Velcro strap. Go with the built-in strip on the bib or the disposable shoelace strip.

Great Marathon for New York State
A great, basically flat race! I would highly recommend it to anyone. The organization was good, and there were friendly staff everywhere they were needed. Beautiful and unusual course, including the Erie Canal. (Some may have found that boring, but I really enjoyed the traffic-free views and path surface.) Rochester is a great place to visit! What snow?

excellent experience
Flat, fast course. Many water stops had gel, as well as PowerAde and water. Pace groups very helpful. Well organized. Spectators were great. Host hotel service was excellent. All runners had late checkout available. Fresh towels were left in the room for after the race. I will definitely do it next year.

Love the 1/2 Marathon
I'm a newbie - and I just ran my first half-marathon. I was very pleased with the course and the spectators. I didn't have a problem with water supply at the stations. I can't way for next year. I'll definitely run again, and hope to run the full marathon in September 2010.

Nice, small marathon
This was my first marathon; it was a nice experience.
The course started out badly, after running through downtown Rochester we were pigeonholed into cones alongside a major road - not fun. However, then we veered into a park and were able to run alongside the Erie Canal, which was just plain beautiful. A lot of nice sights here. Then near the end you pass the very nice campus of the University of Rochester, and it ends near Frontier Field where the minor league team plays.
A couple of gripes about organization: one, chip pick-up and bag drop-off were in opposite places. This was really annoying for me as I brought my own overnight bag and had to drag it all over the place. Also, there were not nearly enough port-o-johns; I didn't get to go before the race and had to duck into the woods when the call of nature came. Finally, they advertised music along the course, but all we got was a recording of "The Final Countdown" at mile 25. Still, I want to thank as much as I can the WONDERFUL volunteers throughout the race who busted their behinds to make it a nice experience. Thanks so much; you are not forgotten. Their enthusiasm alone is what made me give this a good score. This is their marathon and they are proud of it.
Spectators, it's a small marathon but there were many small groups along the course - again much appreciated, as they were very enthusiastic.
Overall, for a small marathon, I give good props. Thanks for everything, and for making my first marathon a memorable experience.

Hmmm.... Where should I begin?
Well let's start with the good part of the race experience. Two thumbs up to the Hyatt for taking care of the runners. We had a very relaxing stay. The pasta buffet and late check-out were great. Now to the race: Is there some reason the timing service can't show up at the expo or the starting line and hand out timing chips? That would be way too easy. We all got to walk/drive to the finish line (Frontier Field) the morning of the race to pick up our chips. I guess they lose fewer of them that way? Then we all get to walk to the start. Pardon me if I don't want to get a tour of the city the morning of the race. That in itself killed my warm-up and focus before the race.
The race course is fairly flat. Mile 9 takes you onto the canal path with 6 miles of gravel path - which is great for joggers, but horrible for runners. At mile 15 the path converts to a paved bike trail that twists and turns through to mile 24. Three miles after the gravel path I was fading fast. I wonder why? If you want to PR or run a sub-three-hour marathon, don't bother with this race. If you want to be treated well, don't bother with this race for that matter.
The crowds were great at the water stations, and downtown the last two miles. The rest of the course is no-man's land. Congrats to the volunteers at the water stations. They seemed to know what they were doing more than some of the race officials. The finish was great. The announcer was very enthusiastic, calling out racers' names. The refreshment tent, aid station, and ice pool were great. The massage tent was a different story. I had to wait over an hour to get a massage. The half-marathoners had started finishing more than an hour before the first marathoner crossed the finish line and had taken over the massage tent. Tell me something. If you expect a massage after running a half-marathon at a 12-minute pace, what would you expect after running a full marathon? Well the marathon runners definitely weren't going to get the VIP treatment today. Could they have a massage table or two designated for marathoners? That would be too easy. The awards were a total fiasco. Awards were supposed to be at 12 noon. The awards MC didn't even sound like a runner or that he even cared. He would rattle off the top 3 names in an age group and move on to the next - giving no finishing times or anything. The half-marathoners got their awards then the waiting began. The race officials wanted to wait for every last marathoner to finish. All of the runners that earned awards had already finished a long time ago, but that didn't matter. By now it was 1:30 p.m. The band had packed up and left, so there was no PA system for the marathon awards. Some of the marathoners had grabbed their awards and left. It was a total joke! The MC was running back and forth from the finish line to the refreshment area like a chicken with his head cut off. A handful of runners gathered around the awards table. Mind you, the MC didn't even announce that he was doing awards. He just started reading names out. Everybody cheered when a runner came up to the table, almost mocking the MC for not properly honoring the runners who had busted their humps all morning.
I will not be back to this race! My relatives who live in Rochester were absolutely embarrassed to see such a sloppy event in their city! It's sad to see how a few little details ruin a race experience for so many people. I can't imagine that the only problem with this race last year was the heat!

The part of the course along the canal was a bit boring. It was pretty to look at but there were not many fans. More port-a-potties and more Gatorade at the stations would help. The volunteers were great, and the fans who were there were fun.

Fantastic RUN!!!
I just finished the 2009 Rochester Half Marathon, and I have to say, what a major improvement over the 2005 full I ran. I got there at 6:30, and got my chip right away. The bathrooms were stocked, and there were even porta-potties at the start on Andrews Street. Breaking out the full and half start worked REALLY well, and there was TONS of room at the start for both groups. I would have liked pace markers for the half, but that's just being greedy, s I went out way too fast. ;-) Those 7:30's helped in the end, I think. ;-)
Mile markers and aid stations were appropriately placed, and the variety of running locations was good (i.e., road, path, road). The finish line was GREAT to see, as I started cramping badly at the end - a full body cramp. The post-run eats and drinks were GREAT! In 2005 we finished inside the stadium, but the outside worked just fine and was closer anyway. I liked the chocolate milk, pizza, fruit, and water at the end. Overall: 5 stars. I appreciate all the volunteers and officers on the route. I thought that the 1/2 was a little light on spectators, but I loved to see all of them dearly! OVERALL: 5 STARS - this was a fun run.
- Dan W. from Penfield: 1:54:30, with an average pace of 8:45,I think ;-)

Rochester - Make it a whole trip!!!
It is great to make a whole weekend in Rochester! There are many theaters, parks, cute shops, hiking paths, bars and pubs, and music venues to keep you busy over marathon weekend!

Great Half Marathon
I'm a newbie - and I just ran my first half-marathon. I was very pleased with the course and the spectators. I didn't have a problem with water supply at the stations - there was plenty during my run (and I only run an 8:30 pace, so not at the front of the pack by any means). I will definitely run again, and hope to run the full marathon in September 2009.

Lots of water, no cups
This is the 3rd time I have run Rochester (the half this time). When we arrived at the first water station, they told us they were out of cups and were handing out gallon jugs of water. The third water station station also was out of cups. At the fourth water station, I witnessed a volunteer picking up cups and re-using them to offer to the runners. I turned to another runner and said, "Did I just see that?" She said that she had run about 20 marathons and had never seen that before.
Some of the mile markers were wrong. Since the start line changed this year, I think that some of the mile markers were at the 2007 spots instead of the new spots. If you watched the painted marks on the path, you could see that there were 2007 and 2008 markers about 1/10 of a mile apart.
There aren't too many spectators along the way, but the ones there were supportive. I like the band along the canal that responded when I yelled, "I need more cowbell!"
I wish the finish line was inside the stadium, as it was the last time that I ran. The set-up in the street allowed for spectators and finishers to cross in front of runners to get to the parking lot.
I would probably return, but it will be hard to convince my wife to join me again!

Nice course - more water
This was my second half-marathon, and while the course was lovely, the water stations were lacking. Towards the middle of the race, there were about four miles where there was absolutely no water at any of the stations. I had a fuel belt, but I gave my last bottle of water to a woman who looked like she was about to pass out. While it's hard to plan for such a brutally hot day, there were many more people being brought out on stretchers than I would have liked to have seen. My husband, who also ran the half, told me that he was actually taking two cups at the stations: one to drink and one to dump on his head! While this was understandable in the heat, no wonder there was a lack of water!

Thank You, Ice Man!!
Despite the tough conditions, I enjoyed this marathon. The chips should be handed out with the packets, like at every other race I've been to. While the organizers had plenty of fluids/gels on the course, "The Ice Man" brought me back to life a couple of times. Maybe the organizers should consider having contingency ice/misters for future races. The course was very nice and the support of the spectators was much appreciated. I found the host hotel to be very nice. I will definitely run this race again.

Great Course - Brutal Day
The mile markers were definitely off, starting at mile one. According to my Garmin, the course was actually about .2 long. Heat and humidity were the worst I've ever raced in. Volunteers were terrific and let me fill my 20-ounce bottle at every water stop, and believe me, I needed it. The first part of the course along East Ave. is great, with some nice ups and downs out in Fairport. The canal, especially on a hot day, can be agonizingly boring, but it's great on a cool day. I'm not a big fan of the roughly six miles of cinder either, but at least it's a break on your knees. Running the half marathon last year on the same course was considerably more enjoyable, but the temperature was about 35 degrees cooler. Most of the water at the water stations was almost warm this year, but understandably, and probably unavoidably. Race medals were almost unchanged from the prior year, which was also disappointing. A tech shirt would also be better than a long-sleeve cotton one in the goody bag. But overall, great volunteers, good field size, and nice course.

Will be back with a vengeance
With over 30 half's under my belt, I strongly recommend this one to any caliber of runner. A fellow runner and I returned this year instead of traveling to the money-hungry Philly distance run. I have absolutely no negative feedback, but who turned the heaters on? I will be back next year, with a score to settle.

Half Marathon
This is my second year running the Rochester Half Marathon and it was once again a great experience in terms of the organization and on-course support. The weather is out of the hands of the race directors, and I feel they did a great job with making sure every runner was OK. My only real issue is with the water stops, because nearly half the water stops on the half course did not have cups. I had them pour water in my hands so I could lap it up, but on such a hot day, that didn't help much. Also, the traffic getting to Frontier that morning was horribly backed up and I agree, couldn't they open more gates to the parking lot? I waited forever and had to drive all the way around it to find an open gate on the far side. Otherwise I thought everything went smoothly. I'm definitely planning to run it again next year - maybe even try the full! Thanks, Rochester!

Well done, considering the heat and humidity
This was my second Rochester Marathon, and thanks to the weather, it was brutal. That said, the organization seemed to be excellent and I was impressed with the obvious presence of emergency personnel even on the more remote areas of the canal path. Water stops were plentiful and volunteers were enthusiastic. I also really enjoyed not having to run the extra block or two at the end of the race this year. In the "to be improved" category, larger water cups would be appreciated in the future, as would more prominent and more accurate mile markers. Everyone in my cluster of runners during the first mile commented that the yelled-out mile splits were way off (a minute or more slow). Also, we had been informed earlier in the summer that we would be using the new canal path bypass through the Dept. of Transportation in Pittsford, but we instead were routed the older - and slightly longer - way around. Much of running a marathon is mental, and I didn't like trying to deal with the heat while also worrying that I was going to have to run MORE than 26.2! These quibbles aside, it was a nice race. Next year I'll just cross my fingers for cooler weather!

Another great race
This is my second time running the half, and it is a great race. Very well organized. I liked the walk to the starting line rather than the shuttle buses - that change worked really well. The water stops along the half were plentiful - on such a hot day I was glad to have so many. The only negative was the traffic into the parking lot. I waited about 20 minutes just to turn the corner to get into Lot C to park. There were a number of entrances to the lot that were closed. Is it possible to open them for next year? I think that would have helped with the traffic. The parking was plentiful - you just couldn't get into the lot.
Loved the cheering HS track teams! They did a spectacular job! I will definitely do again! Great job!!

How to make the best of the worst conditions
I've run this marathon since it started up again, and this was my 15th overall. It was the absolute worst conditions I've ever run in. High heat and humidity with a baking sun. The organizers were outstanding, however. It was a bit disconcerting to see golf carts used as mini ambulances on the canal; but for the very dangerous conditions, everyone who needed it received appropriate attention. My only criticisms are (again!) the need to pick up chips before the race and the apparent incorrect mile markings for at least some of the race (certainly the first mile). If you are concerned about people not returning the chips, just take a credit card number as a deposit. I'd happily give mine to avoid having pick up the chip. Regarding the mile markers, did anyone else think these were off?

overall a very good race
A great job of organizing. Superb volunteer staff. Interesting course. It was a very hot, humid day and staff did everything they could to see that adequate hydration was available and that the runners were protected.
There was one major negative and that did not pertain to the actual running of the race. The host hotel was the downtown Hyatt Regency. Their concern for the runner was zero. When the reservation was made, they led you to believe that a late check-out would be available (although not promised). When you arrived, they had a letter waiting for you saying that if you weren't out of the room by noon, they would do what they could to force you into bankruptcy. They were not nice to work with. The bottom line on this was that if you were not a sub-3-hour marathoner, there was no way you were going to get a shower before heading home, a fact probably not lost on those traveling in the same conveyance as you. There is ample parking at Frontier Field. Stay outside Rochester near an interstate highway and some restaurants, and drive into the race in the morning.

The Rochester Marathon Needs Improvement
I have run both the half and full marathons for this race. This year was less organized than previous years. At the start, there were not enough bathroom facilities for the number of runners. Much of the course runs along the Erie Canal Path and that inhibits access for spectators and makes the run no different from a long training run. The course would be better if it made a few loops through the city to help with spectators. Also, the staggered start of the marathon created a situation where the winner of the marathon was in a pack of half-marathoners. I would recommend running the half-marathon as a two-person relay. The organizational problems were especially highlighted at the end of the race, where spectators were allowed to be in the path of the finishers due to the lack of barricades and monitored crossing points. The water station at the end of the race ran out of cups. At one point, the inflatable finish line broke and needed to be replaced. Rochester needs to do better.

Host hotel not worth it!
Marathon organizers did a good job handling the high heat and humidity, and the organization ran smoothly. Only 2 gripes, neither of which should keep you away from this great race: First is the chip pick-up issue, which is just plain silly. Second is the host hotel, the Hyatt, which gave runners a note on check-in that there was no late checkout on race-day. They cited the "complete turnover of the hotel." Maybe next year the race organizers will drop them as host, and they will realize that having an empty hotel is much worse than a full hotel leaving late.

Great race!
This is my first time running the Roc Half Marathon. I was really excited to run this because the last 3 miles are quite relaxing and beautiful. However, the first two water stops had run out of cups! Some runners - including myself - asked for water to be poured in their mouths, while others drank from used cups. Next time, I will suggest running with a water system to prevent this from happening.

They really tried but need to plan for heat more.
First off, let me start off by saying I train and race in South Florida. In the race brochure, it was advertised that in the unlikely event of tornadoes, hurricanes or extreme heat, the race could be canceled. Well, unexpectedly, they got 2 out of 3 that day, as Ike paid a visit later on in the day. Go figure - in Rochester! This could be a great marathon but probably should have been shortened to a half marathon this day. The course is beautiful, I especially enjoyed the canal path and area around the university. Race organization was very good, although the mile markers could have been more visible. The volunteers and police were AWESOME! I would like to thank them all over again. I mentioned to my support team (my brother) that if it was hot out, I would need ice, as that's what we make sure we have on long run days in Miami. My brother showed up with 12 bags of ice in various places and shared it with as many runners as he could. If had not been for the ice, I would not have finished. So thank you to my brother, also known as "Ice Man" on the course. I feel this race could have been great, but you just can't control the weather.

Solid race
The GOOD:
The course was relatively flat. The first 5 miles were a gentle downhill, then rolling with a mild climb just before entering the canal path at 9.5 miles. The canal path was approximately 14 miles of the race. The first 10 miles or so of the canal path were extremely flat and in direct sun. It then was tree-lined until the trail ended at about mile 22. Then onto some city streets that were well staffed by police and volunteers. Water stops were well staffed with friendly folks. Spectators were sparse along that first 10-mile span of the canal path. The course was friendly and the actual race was well organized.
The BAD:
The host hotel (HYATT) did not allow for late check-out, even though I was assured this while making reservations in mid August. The manager had quite an attitude when questioned about it. (Thankfully, one of the race directors at the expo was kind enough to set us up with alternative post-race shower arrangements.)
The marathon room rate ($99) was no longer available even though a deadline of 8/22 was posted on the marathon's website.
The pasta party was ridiculous. It was advertised as lasting from 4-7 p.m. We arrived at six to only pasta and salad. They had already run out of the advertised meatballs, bread, dessert, and drinks (water, soda, etc.). I saw some people get refunds, but then the money collectors packed up by 6:30 and left. As we were leaving, people we entering with tickets in hand.
Neither the expo or the pasta party were held at the host hotel.
I had to drive everywhere after driving over 4 hours to get to Rochester.
The UGLY:
The weather - high 87, humidity 90%. This is obviously out of anyone's control, but it was BRUTAL!!!!!! They shut the race down at 12:30 (mile 20). Luckily, I came in around 11:15. No more September marathons for me!

leaves a lot to be desired
I just ran the 2008 1/2 Marathon. I was there with running group and we were in both events, the 1/2 and the full. We all got rooms at the host hotel, the Hyatt. Upon arrival we were informed that there would be no late checkout available, even though it was advertised and promised at time of reservation. Therefore, we couldn't get post-marathon showers, which is tough, considering the weather and our four-hour drive home. We also had preregistered for the pasta party, which was the worst experience of the whole weekend. They had a grand total of two tables in a lounge area at the Athletic Club. That meant eating standing up or sitting on a window sill for most there. It was advertised from 4:30 to 7:00, and we arrived at 5:15, and they were out of food all but salad. After scraping up leftover pasta from the bottom of the pan and waiting for a refill, we looked for the organizers at 6:00, but they had closed and vacated the area so we had no recourse for food or our money back. I will admit that both the hotel and the pasta party were held by different company/organization, so they were not directly affiliated with the race. Yet it was a bad start and taste for the weekend. The race went off okay, even though the weather was terrible for a run. Obviously not their control. I would not do this race again, nor my running group.

Even better this year
I have run this event for 3 years now, and this year was the best organized. The course remained largely unchanged, but there were lots more spectators and lots of people cheering. There was a small band and a violin-type group. My compliments to the race organizers. There were lots more volunteers along the course and they were needed due to the heat and humidity of the day.

Scenic, Friendly, and Fun Race
This was my first "small" marathon-1/2 marathon race (versus tens of thousands) and I enjoyed everything about this event. Although I expected pre-race stress in having to pick up my chip and walk to the start; I did not experience any due to signage and organization, lack of crowding, and a very short "warm-up" walk to the start with time to spare before the graduated starts for each event. The course was beautiful, especially along the river, and without killer hills. And I greatly appreciated the police, who were very encouraging towards the end of the race and who knew exactly how far to the finish. I would have appreciated more mile markers and splits, but that did not detract from the overall quality of the race, which was scenic, friendly, and fun.

Hot = Slow
Weather player a major factor in '08. At least that was the case for me. After completing the initial 10 miles in 80 minutes, I drastically fell off around the 13-mile mark. The heat and humidity took their toll on many of the runners. I passed a lot of runners who understandably had resorted to walking. Fortunately, I was able to recover and finish the final 6 or so miles in a rather fast pace.
I ran the final two legs of the relay in 2007, so I was familiar with the course for the most part. The canal path is rather boring, in my opinion, but I understand many out-of-towners enjoy the scenery.
I really enjoy the fans that line East Ave. and the few spectators that venture onto the remote portions of the canal path. Running through Shoen Place in Pittsford is always uplifting. Many thanks to the guy near mile 16 who had ice cubes for all passing runners and to the Penfield X-C team and the other local HS and college teams who really know to get you moving.
I'm not sure what to think about the new starting line, but the new finish is perfect. Eliminating the final one block that leads to Frontier Field was a no-brainer.
I plan to run this marathon as long as I live in the area. No doubt about it.

Chip pickup issues
I walked the half last year and really enjoyed the experience, except for the (already mentioned) chip pickup on race morning rather than with packet pickup. Although I know there have been a lot of comments made about this issue, I just found out that the race director has not made a change for this year's marathon. So disappointing... it was inconvenient and time-consuming to have to go to the finish line before the race, to say nothing of the poorly organized shuttle buses!

injured
This was my first marathon and I was enjoying the experience and running a great race until I was injured. I had been given the ok by my orthopedic physician to run the race on a stress fracture. I did well until the uneven canal path cause my leg to cramp up. One misstep and I could no longer walk, let alone run. There was a bicycle official quickly by my side; however, the phone numbers to call for help were not working. After an alternate number was found there, was no way to get me off of the canal path. Since I could not walk, an ambulance had to be called to get me to the finish line. Unfortunately, there was nothing in place to get injured runners off of the canal path and to a nearby road, where an ambulance could get them medical attention. Two volunteers had to place me on a bicycle and push me to the nearest road, which was very painful for my leg.
My situation was not life-threatening; however, my concern is for a runner with heat stroke or other life-threatening condition. The delay could lead to an unfavorable outcome. My injured leg prevents me from running the full marathon this year, but in an attempt to qualify for Boston I plan to run again in '09. I hope consideration will go into providing quick transportation (for example a golf cart) to runners in need on the canal path.

Great first-time experience
I ran the half - my first - and the weather, course and organization were great. Only complaint was the buses from registration to the start line: very, very slow and unorganized. Several buses sat empty within sight of the long line of people - we didn't know what they were doing. But it was great overall. Nice free chiropractic adjustments and mini-massages. I would come back for this one.

A great first marathon
The '07 Rochester Marathon was my first time out, but I think it made a great first race. The organization overall was very good, though I echo the comments of others about the silliness of going to Frontier Field to get the chip on race day and then walking a mile back to the starting line. I'd also like to see more going on at the expo. Parking was surprisingly good, weather was great, volunteers friendly, post-race munchies excellent! The course showcases the best of our area.

First-Timer Loved The Rochester Experience!!
O.K. this was my first marathon, so I cannot compare it to others, but I loved every minute of it. I stayed at the host hotel, which was fairly close to Frontier Field (starting area and finish line). The expo and packet pick-up was farther away from the hotel than I would have liked, but the staff gave me some good directions. The morning of the race, we (my wife and kids came along) made our way to Frontier Field to get my timing chip and find the starting line. Other posters have mentioned that the chips should have been given out with the packets, and I agree. An easy solution to having to go to Frontier and then 1 mile or so to the starting line would be to start and finish at Frontier! This way, no delays at the start while waiting for busy shuttle buses to arrive.
The race started and I quickly found my pace. Water stops were plentiful and well staffed. I had brought my own power gels, and the course also had gel stops. I had heard the run on the canal was long and boring. Long, yes, but very scenic - and the time passed fairly well. My wife and kids met me at miles 8, 13, 20, and at the finish. If you can have someone meet you along the course, it gives you some short-term things to look forward to. I arrived at mile 26 and was VERY ready for the finish line on Morry Way. I saw the road sign ahead and was ready for a left turn to the finish, but was directed around the block to the finish line! The LONGEST block in my life!! Finally, I saw the finish line ahead. Lots of crowd support, and I located my wife and kids.
Crossing the finish line was one of the most gratifying moments of my life. When I embaced my wife, the tears were flowing. What a super feeling! All the training and hard work were definitely worth it! I didn't realize how hungry I had become until I saw the pizza in the food tent. Ordinary pizza, but it tasted like heaven. Had a few slices, then made the slow and somewhat painful walk back to our car for the ride home. I had brought some ice bags for my legs and some PowerBar recovery drink. I think they both helped. That's how my first marathon day went. Couldn't have asked for better weather, and had a nice course, well organized race, and good crowds. Like I said, I can't really compare this run to other marathons, but I would certainly recommend it to everyone! Happy running!!

Best marathon I've ever run
This was my first marathon and it was wonderful.
1) Early in the season and beautiful weather.
2) Other runners were very friendly.
3) Fantastic spectator support (except for most of the canal path, which was quiet and very relaxing and serene).
4) Great course by the universities, museums, beautiful old homes, parks, canal, and impressive downtown. Not too difficult, either (fairly flat).
More water stations wouldn't have hurt, but it wasn't too bad (they are about every 2 miles).
Thank you, Rochester!

Outstanding job by organizers
I have run the previous 2 Rochester Marathons and this was my favorite. The weather was perfect and there were many more spectators than usual. The organization was great from beginning to end with only 1 exception: the chip distribution. Please listen to the people here who took the time to make comments and suggested that the chip be handed out with the packets. Otherwise, I don't think you can improve on anything!

Great course and crowd.
This was a good run and a great excuse to come back and run in my home town. Overall, I found the course quick but challenging. Like at a lot of others (with cool temps and downhill slopes for the first few miles), I came out too fast. I missed my goal time by a hair in the end, but it was a mental lapse - not course difficulty - which tripped me up.
Like one of the other posters, I really got re-charged by the folks with jug and coin noisemakers!
Post-race massage was a very welcome treat - with no waiting for an open table!
I will be back next year for sure.

Favorite Course
This was my 5th marathon in 2007 and by far my favorite. The course was near perfect. I heard comments prior to the race that running along the canal path (big chunk of the race) was boring. If you are looking for NYC crowds, perhaps you will be bored, but for me, running along a historic, shady canal path, through little villages was perfect. I will definitely do this race again and again. I was using this race as a long training run for another marathon in a few weeks and therefore tried to maintain an easy, relaxed pace. The course was so favorable, however, that I still was only 7 minutes off of my PR. The only negatives were the chip pick up at the finish line coupled with the long bus lines to the start. Rather than waiting for the bus in the cold, I walked to the start (about 3/4 of a mile), which turned out to be a perfect warm-up. One other thing: The Gatorade-type drink that was provided along the course was clear in color and several time, when I asked a volunteer for water, I was handed a cup of the Gatorade-type drink instead. It would make sense to switch to a colored drink so that runners and volunteers can differentiate.

Gets better each year
What a great day. Everything was perfect. Increased crowd support from previous years was a pleasant surprise. Race Committee was very responsive to my needs.
Over 2000 runners this year. Guaranteed, numbers will continue to grow as word gets out about this one.
Can't wait until next year.

Great, Small Marathon
Excellent small marathon. Organization was spot on with only one exception. I didn't understand why the timing chips were not provided in the packet pick-up or at the start line. Runners had first to stop at the finish line to pick up their chips, and then make their way several blocks over to the start line. This wasn't any big deal; it just appeared to be a little unnecessary. The course was scenic and well marshaled. The gravel portion of the canal path was a welcome change from the asphalt. This is a course that is fair and can produce a PR. I train alone and typically run in smaller events that don't tend to have large crowds. So I am not the best judge of fan support. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the number and excitement level of the fan support. Granted, most of the crowd was located at the relay points and finish line. Still, they were significant numbers and they were loud. The relocated finish line turned out to be a vast improvement over finishing inside the stadium. The finish line area was lined with people and at that point the support was welcome. The post-race food was plentiful, and what one would expect. All in all, well worth the $50. I would run this again.

First-time half-marathon - great race
This was my first half-marathon and I really had a blast. Water stops were plentiful, crowds were very supportive - cheering sections all along the way. I really like the e-mails that Fleet Feet sent out leading up to the race that kept participants well informed and also got us psyched for the race. Packet pick up was convenient, and the emails gave great directions to packet pick up and to the race start, letting us know where we could park, etc. I loved that Fleet Feet tirelessly announced all names as we crossed the finish line, that made for a really great finish to a long summer of training and really personalized it! I also loved the bag drop so that we didn't freeze as we stood in line for chips and the shuttle buses - that was VERY appreciated! The only negative part was that chip pick-up was in a different location and the shuttle bus line was extremely long - giving some last-minute stress to the start. Many people opted to walk to the start rather than wait in the shuttle bus line. Perhaps next year the chip pick-up could be done at the site of the start? My goal is to run again next year because I really had a great time at this race!

Great volunteers, but food stations were random
What a perfect day to run through our beautiful city. I loved the course and the fan support throughout. Several people that lived along the course set up their own informal water stations, which was fantastic. This was my first marathon, so not knowing what to expect I probably planned more and relied more on the map than I should have, which brings me to my only complaint. The Gatorade (which was supposed to be PowerAde) was very sparse. I was also expecting gels at approx. mile 10, 15, and 20, which was not the case at all. They had them around miles 5 and 7 and then not again until 15, with very little Gatorade/PowerAde in between. I unfortunately did not take one at 7 because I was expecting to see another one somewhere around 10. It made the 10-15 mile stretch much longer than it needed to be. Other than that, I absolutely loved the entire experience! The drop bags were also a huge help, since it was super cold at the starting line. I thought that was very well organized.

Outstanding!
My first marathon of any type and it was a full marathon. Rochester did not disappoint me. I thought the entire program - from expo and packet pick-up to post-race party - was outstanding! The volunteers were all cheery and smiling, and the fans and cheerleaders at all stages were so supportive that I couldn't help but get a big grin on my face. Plenty of food and drink post-race!! Great number of water stations. The live band was really cool!!! Course was beautiful, with a superb finish! Thanks to local police for their support and keeping runners safe. The last 4 to 5 miles were brutal, but, hey, for my 1st marathon, I expected that and wouldn't have it any other way. Thank you all. I'll be back next year.

First Half-Marathon Was Awesome!!
Thank you to all who put this wonderful event together! I had a great experience - from the expo to the finish line, it was very organized! The volunteers were so supportive and helpful, the fans were enthusiastic, the scenery was gorgeous, and the list goes on. I targeted the half marathon as my first marathon experience (I started running in May '07) and I truly must say I've been bitten by the running bug after this event and will definitely be back next year... running the full, I hope! Thank you, Rochester!!

Chuck the Chip
Overall great race. Really appreciate everyone's efforts. It's usually a thankless job to organize one of these. Two pet peeves, though:
1. Start on time. No excuses.
2. Timing chip. Give it out at packet pickup or don't use it. Having to go by Frontier Field and then stand in line to shuttle to the start JUST to pick up a chip is ridiculous. In fact, next year if the chip set-up is the same, I'm going to forget the chip. Why do I need it? I have my watch. I know what I run. There are no mats on the course. And I dang sure am not going to need it to claim any prize.

Great Potential - Overall Great Experience
Good: Fans and volunteers were fantastic. Water was ample, but Gatorade was sparse.
"Definitely Needs Improvement" Category: Not receiving chips with packet pick-up like every other marathon I have run - insult to injury when we had to pick up at Frontier and then make our way to the start (race was actually delayed due to late shuttles).... This is an easy fix. Question: Did the course seem long? My computer showed 26.9 miles (probably wrong, but my time reflected a longer run as well). Curious to hear what others think.

Wonderful course
This was my 3rd marathon - not as a runner, but as a walker. The course was beautiful. The only problem is that at the end of the course it was very difficult to know which way the course went because most of the race crew had already left the course, even though the course was technically open for 7 hours. Other than that, I would do this marathon again.

great course, great support
I loved this course. The canal towpath was easy on the feet and pretty too. I liked that part very much. The first part of the race was shady and lazy downhill street with old houses and greenway. The water stops were frequent, crowded with volunteers. The road crossings were well managed by the police even when I was the only one needing to cross. My only critical comment would be to change the location of the entry to the medical area to provide easier access. I would run this one again.

Super; perfect weather, great fans!!!
The Arthritis Foundation did an outstandidng job!!!! I was on a new relay team this year and the other members thought this was the best relay they have ever done. We drove to the drop-off spots and enjoyed the fans and the sights as well.

Great run along the quiet Erie Canal
I finished my first Rochester Marathon in my average time; however, the marathon was well above average. Some runners complained about the long Erie Canal section but I liked it very much Green, quiet and free of any traffic. The event was very well organized, from the start to the finish line and afterwards. Highly recommended to anyone who likes medium-size runs.

excellent race
I ran the half marathon and a friend ran the full.... It was a very well organized race, the finish line festivities were great (live music, good food - pizza, soup, pretzels, energy bars, plenty of Accelerade - the announcer at the finish line announcing names and facts about the finishers was awesome, especially for a half marathoner watching the marathoners finish), the logistics (bag pick up, bus to start (good signage) etc.) went smoothly, it is a great course for a PR (very flat) and of course the weather this year was perfect. Running along the canal path was great (only about 5 miles for the half marathoners, much longer for the marathoners). One suggestion: as a half marathoner, I received the same medal as the marathoners and relay participants (the ribbon was a different color) and I don't feel as if I deserve a medal that says, "marathon" on it if I didn't run the marathon. Perhaps there could be different medals for each category, as opposed to the same medal and different ribbons. Great race! Will highly recommend it.

Great Course, great weather, expectional
The weather was perfect for the race. There were plenty of water stops (especially between miles 18 and 24 where I really needed it). The spectators were great. One group had filled milk jugs with coins and shook them as I ran through - very cool. And the woman announcing my name as I approached the finish had tireless enthusiasm. Everyone associated with this event deserves my sincere thanks.

There was good and there was bad
First the good: This course is truly fantastic. This was my second Rochester Marathon and I love, love, love the course. Mildly challenging, but great scenery. Weather was picture perfect. Now for the bad: The race changed the logistics of this and the expo location was not convenient to the host hotel and no real place to park, and we were told for the first time, the week before the race, in an e-newsletter (the one you usually delete), that chip pickup could only occur the morning of the race. That would be okay if the location of the pickup was at the starting line. But it wasn't, so you have to interrupt your pre-race routine to get your chip the morning of the race, and then go to the start. There was not enough Gatorade on the course (every other water stop so about every 3-4 miles). Last year the race seemed better organized.

What a beautiful run. Well organized - great job!
This my second time running the Rochester Marathon. I thought everything was well organized, a lot of water stops on the way, and lots of great cheering!!! I was a bit confused after I ran through the finish line, I couldn't find the bottled water, and bagel stand. It was great when I finally did. I had wished that the medallion would have been a different color this year, but all in all we could not have asked for a better day. Thank you to all of you who worked so hard to make this race a success.

A pretty flat course, but a little too much was along the canal. Lots of water stops and the crowd was very supportive. The massage at the end was also awesome.

2007 Half Marathon a Great Event!
I ran the half on '05 and was back again in '07. This race was well-organized from shuttle buses to bag drop off/pick up and is beginning to take on the feeling of an established event. I actually liked NOT finishing IN Frontier Field this year (ended on a road outside due to construction). I didn't like running around the stadium and then around the outfield dirt to finish as in previous years. Because of the finish outside the stadium, there was a better post-race flow for getting nourishment and meeting family (and you didn't have to climb all those stairs up off the field finish to do so!). Plus, a live band helped add atmosphere!
The revised-from-2005 half course was much improved and interesting, and the canal/GV trail finish nice. My only complaint was on the narrowness of the canal path - if the event grows, the canal trails may not be wide enough, as I had trouble passing people running 2 abreast this year already.
Side note: I ran the full in '06 (first marathon) and thought the canal portion was WAY too long. Too few spectators - I felt isolated and could have used crowd motivation. One of the few spectators commented to me at the end of a long, narrow stretch: "The end of the Sahara Desert is just up ahead."

2006 Half Topped 2005 event!

Some of the best running Rochester has to offer
A quick nine miles out to the canal path; find your groove along the canal because, realistically, that is the race. Come out at the U of R and bring it home with a fast finish. Great marathon. You must do it!

Great 1/2 marathon!
I ran the 1/2 marathon in 2006 on my 50th birthday! It was also one of my training runs for my first marathon, which I ran in Chicago - October 2006! I loved the Rochester 1/2. The course was challenging and I loved the finish line! The medal and shirt are great. It was fun running with a shirt that stated "Running away from 50" on the back with my birth date! Many runners commented and laughed. I have recommended this race to friends and they will be running with me this year as "51 tries to catch me!!" Great job!

Too much canal
The canal portion was too long. There were long isolated stretches on the canal path. It was nice to finish at Frontier Field; however, I didn't appreciate a volunteer requesting that I move off the field. That being said, I'll probably run it again. We need to support our local marathon.

Too much canal path. Runners need more spectators.
Too much time on the canal path. Being on a Sunday, except for churches, businesses shouldn't be negatively impacted by closing a few streets for a few hours. Heard one bagpiper along the canal. How about signing up local bands/musicians to provide music at corners along the way? Excellent finishing up in Frontier Field.

Well Organized
This was my first 1/2 marathon and I felt it was well organized with plenty of water stops, BUT I do not like the canal portion at the end. I felt like I was running, but with the scene not changing, I never got anywhere - it tired me out. The rest of the course was wonderful and very interesting!

Great marathon... lots of improvements from 2005
Liked the course - it is great to finish at Frontier Field. All of the minor problems last year were addressed and it made for a great run. The weather was a little warm, but that was unusual for that time of year.
It is a fairly flat course and I beat my goal time. Looking forward to next year.

First Time Fun!!
This was my first attempt at a marathon and I chose this race because it gets me back to Rochester to see family and friends. It was a nice day to run at the start, but it got hot. I expected cooler temps, but I don't think the organizers have much control over that. What they do control they did well with. I'd like to see the course stay on the road and off the canal--it might be better supported thus making it easier persevere in the later miles. I'd like to come back and run it again as I missed my target goal by 7 minutes and feel the course owes me! All in all, an enjoyable experience in a great city.

Enjoyed the race - beautiful day and scenery!
Overall, my experience with the Rochester Marathon was very positive. The course was beautiful, not too difficult, and well supported. The only complaint I had were the warm temps. I wish the race could either be pushed back a few weeks into more fall-like weather, or start a little bit earlier (7 a.m.?) so that temps could be cool for more of the race. By mile 2 the sun was already bright and high in the sky! But I still enjoyed the experience and plan to run it again in the future.

Excellent venue for a race
As a first-time marathoner, it was a great race to do. I have been to Boston, New York, and Marine Corps., but never ran. The course was great and the water stops plentiful. The only downer was not enough port-a-potties at the start. Having only 15 for 1,500 runners is a little slim. Other than that, it was fantastic. I won't be running next year (deal with my wife), but may either volunteer or run the half. Organization, fans, and support were great.

This was an excellent run with a fine course (much of it on canal paths), water stops that were well spaced and enthusiastically staffed, a great finish, and lots of massage tables at the end. I highly recommend it, and will be back again next year. Great job, Rochester!

Thanks! Great fun!
Everything was great except the weather. Temperatures increased from 60 to 78 in three hours - 8 to 11 a.m. But after-finish care was great - an ice bath and a team of chiropractors instantly brought me back to life. Definitely will do it next year! Rochester, keep it running!

Flat, shaded with a nice end at the stadium
A perfect day in western New York for a marathon. This is a flat, pleasant course with a long section along the Erie Canal. Shade was very nice.
Ending at Frontier Field (baseball stadium) is a good idea, as it has plenty of space, seats and parking.
Downer: post-race party was pretty lame; check out the party after the Buffalo Marathon for some tips.

Overall a great experience
The race was well organized, the route fantastic, and while there were not a lot of spectators, Fleet Feet did an awesome job of putting together cheer crews. I'll echo the fact that traffic control was great and the water stops quite abundant.
My only gripe was despite three attempts to secure a late check-out from the host hotel, I encountered nothing but problems. The race director happened to be there the third time and jumped in the middle and just made things worse, and worse than that, was totally uncaring about it. I find it rather disappointing to say the least that absolutely zero arrangements were made with the host hotel to accommodate late check-outs when the marathon officially ends three hours after check-out. That certainly made for some unneeded stress - making arrangements to get a shower after before boarding a plane.
I'd do this one again, but would absolutely NOT stay at the host hotel.

Great experience in Rochester
For 2006 being only the 2nd annual Rochester Marathon, the directors and support staff really put on a top-notch event.
Race day organization was perfect, the course was clearly marked, police presence was great, Gatorade and Gu stops were abundant, and the volunteers were very friendly. Finishing in a baseball stadium was cool. The medals are very nice. The post-race party was filled with fresh food; I had to wait a mere 10 minutes for post-therapy. This is not a large race (yet), so my family was able to enjoy the party atmosphere and get lots of pictures on the ball field. They were not herded or pushed around, as there was only a small, friendly crowd.
A good portion of the race is on a bike path along the Erie Canal. With water on one side and woods on the other, crowd support is pretty minimal. There was decent support on the rest of the course.
My only complaint was the expo. I received a postcard stating it would be open until 4 p.m.; we arrived around 3 p.m. and many of the vendors were packed up.
This is a very fun, affordable race, and I intend to be back in 2007.

Well supported race
This marathon was well-organized and surprisingly well-supported. Great traffic control, loads of spectators, really lovely spots along the river, nice variety of surfaces, availability of shade, and great water stops. Volunteers were great, as was the pasta dinner. Nice town. Great finish. The temperature became a little too hot for me, and a little hilly, but nice overall experience.

Great marathon - fantastic finish
Well organized and fairly flat, which allows for quick times. The run along the canal was great for the first few miles but became a little tedious towards the end - or maybe it was just me hitting the wall! Fantastic organization at both the start and at the end made this a great experience. I really hope this marathon continues to grow and I will be back in 2007. Finishing in the stadium was brilliant.

Wow! Big improvement over last year - great course
I ran this race last year and it had a lot of room for improvement. The organizers clearly took the comments to heart and made major improvements. I liked the course last year but this year's was even better. It was great that they split the full and half course and that they split the start times. Most of the full marathoners, even the slow ones, didn't have the half running over them. The canal was hot, but flat and fun. The team fixed the issues with water spots from last year and they were plentiful, well cared for by volunteers and frequent. The spectators were awesome and the course allowed spectators to cheer people on many times across the event without traffic issues. The police and volunteers were amazing, cheering us on throughout the race. This is a great first marathon course since it is mostly flat with just rolling hills. It was so well run; I can't wait to race it again next year. Congratulations to the organizers and keep it up next year.

Wow. I think every previous negative comment was corrected and turned into a positive for this year's run. The organizers obviously listened, cared, and made adjustments. How refreshing from events that just want your money. The Rochester Marathon is a 5-star event all the way around.

They know how to run a marathon.
The organizers took care of everything but running it for you. Traffic control was great; water, Gatorade and Gu stops were abundant; and the post-race party had lots of grub. I especially enjoyed the finish lap in the stadium. Hats off to whoever organized this marathon.

Good Overall Experience
I ran this marathon 2 days ago and it was my first marathon experience. I got there about 45 min. before the race was scheduled to start. The race didn't begin until almost a quarter to 8 because we were waiting for Sri Chimnoy to show up and lead us in a meditation, which was odd and honestly took longer than it should have.
At first the course was lovely; it was pleasant and cool. I liked that it was a 3-mile loop course because I got to see my family a few times cheering me on, which kept my motivation high. The water stations were there every mile and stocked with electrolyte fluid, liquid amino acids, bananas, watermelon and the staff was super friendly.
The weather quickly took a turn for the worse when about 4 miles in it started to rain heavily and kept pounding for 2 and a half more hours. I could barely see more than a few feet ahead of me for a while and the track was completely flooded. You had no choice but to run through massive puddles, which were up to my ankles at parts. Never the less the staff stayed put and kept smiling.
I didn't know what to expect in terms of a the crowd but it did seem rather small but still enthusiastic and stuck it out for most of the horrific weather.
My only complaint is that they had no way of gauging how many laps around the loop we did. I know for a fact there were several that "finished" without doing the full distance.
I received many warm congratulations at the end and a nice medal as well to commemorate the experience. I would definitely recommend this to a first-time marathon runner and will probably run it again next year.

Highly recommended
Considering 2005 was the inaugural version, I would say the Rochester Marathon has serious potential for becoming a top-flight event. This was my third marathon and I was extremely impressed. Race organization, course marshals, logistics, and the course itself were all superb. The spectator support was not as good as in NYC or Boston, but certainly significant and surprisingly enthusiastic for a city the size of Rochester. The course takes runners through some of the most interesting and beautiful neighborhoods in the area and includes a very welcome pancake-flat section along the canal. The finish was especially memorable - getting to run around Frontier Field while spectators watched from the stadium seats was great. Post-race goodies were superb and race support on the course was phenomenal. I will definitely be doing this race again next year and look forward to some of the new course changes!

Date is too early
My 5th marathon. I nearly had my arm ripped off at the first water stop. As I reached for a cup, a half runner came flying through on his return trip and smashed into my arm. I hope they re-think the half for '06.
This was supposed to be an intermediate race before I try to B.Q. in '06. However, I bonked badly at this one. That's part of the reason I'm so negative. The humidity didn't help.
The date for this race is too early for me to do this again. I like the course, although it's hard at the end.

Expo should not be called an expo... it was lame. It didn't seem that the businesses were very supportive... not many spectators. Lots of traffic congestion. Water needs to be at every mile.

Great experience overall!!
I ran the half-marathon, and was very pleased with everything overall.
However, a few minor items to improve on:
1) I never heard the announcers for the opening speech. I wasn't very far back from the start line, and suddenly the race started! Need better sound system.
2) On the return leg, I never saw a mile-marker after Park Ave. If they were there, then it was my fault for missing them. I was struggling at that point, and was looking for the markers for motivation.
3) The event received a lot of negative press from city business owners and residents in the local paper due to street closings, lack of event press, etc. I thought there was plenty of press leading up to the event, but these issues should be considered for '06.
Overall, a great event! THE FANS WERE AWESOME!! Looking forward to '06!

Solid 1st-Time Event
Being a 1st-timer, I defer to experienced runners re: course layout.
Biggest Opportunities:
* Pre-Race - Improve chip distribution, open up frontier bathrooms. This is when runners seem most anxious, so addressing this would provide "relief."
* Course - Although probably due to the heavy rain on previous day, East Ave. would have benefitted from a power sweep prior to the race. Too tight in there with runners in each direction. Improve Gatorade/water stations. (One vote for PowerAde!)
* Post-Race - Food quality and access wasn't impressive; and I was in the middle of the pack. Consider improving that and providing some to runners' family members for a nominal fee so they arent separated post-race?
Positives:
* Fan base was great. I don't expect support, so anything is appreciated.
* Convenience - Being local, an interesting race with big-league potential should have staying power.
* Security - Marshals, police excellent.
* Administration - Great effort put into the race. I think this crew knows what they need to fix and will do it for '06.

Great Marathon. Looking forward to 2006.
Great run, I agree with nearly all of the comments already posted. There was plenty of water and gel when I went through. I ran NYC and this is easier because there are far fewer runners. A little more organization would have helped but it did not impede the experience.

'Must Run' for all Marathoners
Rochester was my 10th marathon and I have to say one of the most enjoyable. It was very well organized - obviously put together by people who were runners/athletically-inclined people who knew what they were doing. Volunteers were very friendly and enthusiastic with their support. Water, gel, etc. were readily available. Spectators along the course were very supportive and cheered all runners. Traffic at intersections was well controlled by local law enforcement and volunteers. The finish in the stadium was easy for your family to see you finish. This is a 'must run' for both the seasoned as well as the first-time marathoner. It's an experience you will never forget. I'm looking forward to returning again next year.

Only one problem....
I recently moved to New York from Florida. This was only my second race up north. I was very pleased with this first-time race UNTIL a few days later. I was an age group winner in the half. We were awarded envelopes with certificates for Saucony shoes up to $90. It was announced that only the winners of the age groups got shoe certificates. The following Monday I got an email stating that our certificates were null and void as those were only supposed to go to the full marathoners. The group email said that we would be sent replacement awards in lieu of the shoe certificates. You can imagine my disappointment after spending the weekend reading up on Saucony shoes and deciding which model I would choose. As of today, October 22, more than a month later, I have not received a single thing from them.

Good for a first-year event.
Although I this was my first marathon, I have run 3 halfs. The course was awesome, I liked running next to the people heading back on the half-marathon course. With the exception of the Mile 4 water stop, all the other water stops had water when I got there. Crowd support in Fairport was fantastic.

Marathon Relay
I had a really good time with this race. This was my first marathon relay. Maybe next year I will run this as my first marathon. We ran this race to help support the return of the Rochester Marathon.
I will keep my comments to the relay.
Pros:
You offered the relay.
Cons:
The chip hand-out was confusing. Our lead-off runner was given the wrong chip. You may be wondering why did our lead-off runner pick up the chip? We were given two different instructions as to who was to have the chip. The packet information was different from that posted on the website. Frantic Friday phone calls, with no calls returned added to the confusion.
What was the relay? We decided to hand off the chip due to the confusion as to who was supposed to have the chip. The Great Race in Auburn had a wrist band to hand off.
No relay markers on the course.
Shuttle bus schedule and directions were not clear and busses got lost.
The relay points didn't give each runner equal distances to run. The last leg was 8.2 miles and most of it was uphill.
I personally felt bad as I passed other runners. I felt that I needed to explain to others that I was a relay runner. I noticed that some full marathon runners didn't like being passed and tried to keep up with me. It would be nice to have a back tag that identified the relay runners.
Having to sort out the confusion of the wrong chip minutes before the start I was impressed with the lady giving out the relay chips. She was very helpful in getting me in touch with a Fleet Feet official. The official gave me the impression that the relay wasn't that important. Almost as if it was a last minute thought. Funny how things go: The Fleet Feet team won the relay.
I'm sorry if I sound negative but I really would like the marathon to be a success here in Rochester. I will be running again next year.

A marathon with great potential!
I ran Rochester as my first marathon, and had a fabulous time! I smiled for 5 hours (well, maybe not so much at mile 18!) and appreciated all of the volunteers. My fellow runners were so helpful and supportive, and The Penguin was a tremendous inspiration.
As a 'penguin' runner, I was often disappointed (but not surprised) as water stations were out of water or Gatorade. Running over gel wrappers and orange rinds was disheartening since the tables were out of these by the time I ran by.
Frontier Stadium was a great start/finish spot, and real bathrooms were a race-day 'treat' compared to the typical port-a-potties. I could not find the finish food area without a great deal of direction and too many stairs. Food on the field would be much better.
I know I am penguin, so I lined up 1:33 behind the start line, figuring that I had a chip timer so it would all work out. Why did I have a chip if there wasn't a mat at the start? In the future, a start mat and splits would be a big motivator.
There weren't always big crowds, but I was so very impressed and appreciative of all the volunteers who kept us safe at all of those street crossings. I loved running along the canal and Fairport was wonderful. What a dedicated race community.
I can't wait to run another marathon, and I recommend Rochester to everyone. I hope The Penguin comes again, because his inspirational books motivated me to run a marathon, and his spaghetti dinner-talk stayed in my head and got me through mile 18!

Great first time in Rochester!
As my second half-marathon, and not picking up running until 2000, this was a great time. I PR'd by 18+ minutes. Who couldn't love that! Downsides? Missing pictures from bibs 51-100 on line, and the shoulder-to-shoulder running for a good section of the course. It helped me on the return loop, but going out and seeing the return runners was a motivation kill.
Suggestions? More water stations and a better fan base. I am sure that will build, but we all know it would help the runners a lot!

Overall a good event!
Ran the half-marathon. Enjoyed the course... but along East Ave. it was difficult to pass runners because of the narrow space and two-way running! More port-a-potties and mile markers would be good. Also, it would be nice if medals (on the front) and t-shirts were specific to the event: marathon or half marathon. Chip distribution seemed to go quickly even with long lines.

A great time.
My only complaint is that there were no posted mile markers on the canal section of the course. Other than that, it was a terrific first marathon experience for me.

Great Race - Great Fun
I was very happy to run my first marathon in my hometown. It was a great course and well organized. Seeing the long lines of traffic and for timing chips I was very pleased when the race started just a few minutes late. I was a little concerned about the uphill grade towards the end of the course, but it turned out that it wasn't too bad.
Having run in many other local races, I'd say the fan support for this race was excellent. Of course I'm hoping for a better crowd (and a better time) next year.

A great first marathon!
Loved having the marathon in Rochester. Only two points for improvement:
1. Water stops seemed to vary. Literature stated they'd be every 2 miles. It shook my confidence a little when there was no water left at mile 4!
2. Chip pick up seemed a little disorganized.
Overall, I really enjoyed the race and plan to run again next year.
Thanks to all the volunteers for your hard work.

First Marathon and Loved it!!!
This was my first marathon and I have to say it was a ball. The fans, the runners and the course made it a great experience. Here are my two cents.
* PROs -
-Frontier field
-Course < besides the doubling back >
-Fan support
-Other VERY SUPPORTIVE runners
* CONs - minor complaints
-Road construction.
-Start line chaos and banner gaff.
-Bathrooms being locked at frontier field before the start.
-Post-race food location.
-Bathrooms 'on' the course < trees were the location of choice >.
-Ceremony was too low-key.
-Chip distribution and collection.
-And lastly... I'd like it not to rain next year. ;-)
These are all correctable 'live and learn' and I'd expect next year to be even better.
Overall, 'Great job.' I'll see you all out on the mean streets of Fairport. #662

Great marathon for me!
I thought the course was great; being off-road for 5 to 6 miles was nice on the legs. Missing mile markers only bothered me a little. However, if the sun were out or it was any hotter, I would have definitely needed more water stations. Also, I needed much more direction on how to get out of the stadium. We ended up down by the dugouts and locker rooms and couldn't find the food. By the time we got there, there was little left. But, overall I did enjoy the marathon, the weather was perfect and course was nice.

An excellent first half-marathon for me!
This was my first half-marathon and it was a very exciting training summer for me and culminated in such a fantastic event on the 17th – I thought it was very well organized by Lynn Doescher at the Arthritis Foundation, as well as Greg Brooks, the race director!
I loved the course running through areas that are so familiar to me and beautiful too. I loved starting and finishing at Frontier Field!
I would have loved having more spectator participation in the city as well, but I think that not only takes better media coverage (D&C and WHAM), but also word of mouth from us to get our friends and families out there, as well as time passing. I would hope that with each passing year, it would become an event similar to the Boilermaker in community support and festivity! Except for right in the city, the spectator support was excellent all along the half marathon route.
I was disappointed in WHAM’s coverage – I anxiously waited for the 11PM news to see the coverage and it was such a short spot squeezed in between all the high school football coverage.
I agree with the comments about the chip retrieval system – I didn’t like that the moment I crossed the finish line they made me stop to get the chip.... A little longer walking chute would have been nice.
I was so happy to have this be my first half-marathon experience and can’t wait for it next year! Thanks so much to all the organizers, race director, volunteer support and police support – I have a great appreciation for the amount of work it took to pull this event off and I thought it was great!

Great Course, More Water Please!!!
This was my first marathon and I live in the city so was thrilled to have it here. The stadium finish was awesome!
Pros:
- volunteers/race coordinators
- traffic control, police
- spectators cheering tirelessly - thank you!
Cons:
- need more aid stations, at least at the higher mileage points
- I was at mile 4 in under 40 minutes and they were OUT of water???? Not everyone runs 8-minute miles, and those of us who don't probably need the water/Gatorade worse than those that do!
- please don't make me stop cold 10 feet after the finish and then fumble for my chip - if there's a way to turn in the chip farther down the lane that would be better
All in all a wonderful experience that I hope turns into a Rochester tradition. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to pull this together.

Not having any marathon experience to compare this to, I thought that it was well organized (chip distribution went very quickly even with long lines). Great spectator support.

Excellent for a premier race!
Very well organized. The course was fun, combining the canal with the Park Avenue area and East Avenue. Fans were fantastic and the weather was mint. There needed to be port-a-potties on the course though... only one was seen and it was up a hill off the course!!!

Great Experience
I originally signed up to run the half-marathon, even though I didn't really prepare enough. I'm just a part-time runner. At race-time, I felt great. As the race progressed, the fans and runners really inspired me. I felt so good, that at the 6-mile turnaround, I decided to go on. I did 21 miles pretty much effortlessly, then struggled throuth the last five. The fans along the way, the volunteers, and every runner I met were amazing. I loved the course, the weather was great, and the overall experience was one of the best of my life. I can't believe how much fun I had, and how great I felt. People treated us like celebrities! I can't wait to do another one.

Nice race, needs some help
I enjoyed the race to a certain extent. I know that it has been awhile since we had it here, but there are some improvements necessary for it to survive. If I had been a first-time marathoner, I would have been more disappointed becuse of the lack of water on the course - for the slower runners, they had run out.
Rochester, being a pretty good town for runners, had no real fan support, and maybe it was the lack of media attention, or advertisments for the race. But, hopefully it will get better.
I liked the fact that we could run down east avenue and park avenue; those are great areas of the city.

Great course - great volunteers!
The only thing I could see changing is allowing the runners a bit more time to have their timing chip removed. I felt like I had sprinted to the finish and then was forced to stop within seconds and have my chip taken off. I almost fell into the guy taking mine off.
The other thing would be to hand out the age group awards at the awards ceremony. I felt like I had to wait forever for that to start and then wonder what was going on. It was confusing.
It was a great time and I'm so glad it's in Rochester! Way to go!

My only negative comment is that I wish the second half of the course was marked as well as the first half.
Othewise it was great all around.

more organization!
I think that the timing chips should have been given out with our packets the day before. Also the water stops did not seem to be every 2 miles like they were supposed to. a few times I wanted a powergel, but no one had them in their hand, they were sitting on the table and i did not notice them until I passed them. The course was good, but the canal path was secluded and there were very few spectators to cheer us on.

Just a great day with all the spectators and all the runners...It was special... The course through the city and the weather could not be better...I would like them to alter the start times for the Half and Full in future races....

Good first time experience
Great energy and support for first 6.5 miles, but at the 'back of the pack' 5 + hour finisher, water stop at mile 4.5 was empty and no gel till 20 miles. Spectators a little sparse after the 1/2 split point. Not much nourishing food left at Frontier Field either! Still a worthwhile effort.

Excellent race
This was my first marathon. I thought that it was organized well. The Town of Fairport was the highlight of the run (besides the finish) simply because there were a lot of supporters out there chearing us on. I also enjoyed running along the canal. It was a nice break from road running.

Overall experience
First off I want to say this was a great event. I have been a runner/triathlete in the area since the early 90's. It's great to see that Rochester has finally put itself on the map for marathons.
After 30 years of running I decided to run my first marathon here in Rochester. Again, I can't say enough about how great the course, the people, the organizers, etc. were.
However, I do have 2 things that I think need to be added. The first and most important, more aid stations. I was amazed at how few there were towards the end of the race. Around mile 21 it seemed they were further and further away. I have spoken with a number of other runners and they felt the same way. Having competed in many tris including 5 1/2 ironmans, the aid stations become closer at the end of the race. I know that at mile 20, the slower folks didn't even get any water. So please think about adding more aid stations toward the end. The second change would be, more of a festive feeling again esp. towards the end of the race. If you have ever experience the Boilermaker you know what I'm talking about. People lining the street from start to finish, music everywhere, from local bands to radio stations. When I came back into the city I honestly thought I made a wrong turn, I felt like I was running through a ghost town. Even by the stadium there wasn't a whole lot of support. Again that's when you need a lot of commotion happening.
Overall it was truly a wonderful race, a great first marathon for me, I qualified to go to Boston which was my goal. I'm hoping to compete in the Rochester marathon again next year, so keep up the great work, and think about the couple of suggestions.
Congratualtions to all of you, and thank you very much....

Organizers did good job on inaugural marathon.
* Nicely run for inaugural event.
* Course was a little rough due to street constuction. I assume this will be better next year.
* Course was not boring and had enough variety to keep race interesting. Race included a number of miles along the Erie Canal and a tour of historic houses in Rochester.
* Course was not flat and last 6 miles had a net uphill climb - never too steep but definitely enough grade to slow down many runners (myself included!).
* Despite a 'chip timing system', results were not posted quickly so people had to hang around a long time to see place (or leave and miss awards ceremony).
* Bottom line: I recommend this race.

Great Potential
First year back for this marathon and it showed. This has so much potential, I hope the organizers, runners, and supporters stick with it.
The good:
1. The Course. Fantastic potential. East and Park Aves are beautiful. The canal path is a wonderful running surface, flat, and peaceful. Frontier Field provides an uplifting finish line.
2. Convenience. Great start/finish area. Plenty of free, easy parking.
3. Plenty of energy gel. Thanks.
4. Nice crowd support at places along the canal, in Fairport village, and along East Ave near the finish.
5. Police support. Excellent traffic control to protect runners at a lot of busy intersections.
The bad:
1. The Start Area. The Start banner ought to go up sooner than 12 minutes before start time. Lose the wimpy megaphone and get a sound system people can here. Blast out some feel-good music. Have Pacing signs up and tell people what they're for.
2. Where was the Gatorade for the first few aid stations?
3. Timing Chips. Good lord, if you're going to make us stand in a winding line for 20 minutes prior to the race to pick them up, use them. Get some mats out. Use a mat at the start at least and publish both clock and adjusted times. A half-marathon mat would be nice too. Otherwise, can the chips.
4. Mile Markers. Whew, I don't think I was that spaced out but I sure don't remember seeing many. Was the half-way point marked?
5. Add a course map into the pre-race packet. The D&C had a great map published. Ask them to print up a couple thousand extra as advertising and throw it in.
And the ugly:
1. The Course. Doubling back of the half marathoners into the face of the rest of the pack was nasty. Road construction might have been the reason everyone was squeezed into a lane that was, at best, 4 people wide- 2 people ea way- in places.
All things considered, a nice job for the inaugural. With a few specific improvements, this one could be in the big leagues soon.

Great event all the way around. Will be back!!
Kudos to race director. Event was well organized, fans were great. This is a race Rochester should be incredibly proud of, it will surely grow in profile in the years ahead!!
Congrats to Eric Garsin (2nd male finisher) - only his second ever marathon, could become a dominating runner at that distance.

No gatorade / powerade on most of the course
I am shocked with an org that miscalculates water / powerade for a marathon. Stops at 2 miles apart. At mile 4, no water, no gatorade 40 minutes into the race. Only water at all stops after mile 10. It was lucky that it was 70 degrees. No food at the end of the race except bread and fruit covered by flys. On the other side, volunteers, police, spectators were amazing and made the race.

first half-marathon
I've seen better-organized races than this one. They ran out of water at mile 4, so I had to run another 2 1/2 miles until I got my first drink of water/Gatorade. There weren't many spectators there, but that might have been because not a lot of people knew about it. As it becomes an annual event, I think more people will come out to cheer.

very well done, world class , my 9th marathon
This was my 9th marathon and my first in my home town. Everyone who attended the pasta dinner was entertained by the Penguin and it was awesome and the dinner was great. The day of the race the course was a joy, no cars or problems. Lynn the organizer was reachable for any questions and made us very special at both the start and finish line.

Great marathon - Beautiful course!
What a great way to start off the this marathon. Top Notch!
I finished this years marathon (my second marathon so far) and I had a great time! The course was interesting and had extensive marshals, water stops and traffic control. The villages of Pittsford and Fairport really came out to cheer us on and by mile 14 we really needed it. Park Ave has some work to do for next year, I think most were still asleep from the East End Fest
The only suggestion I would make is regarding the finish. Frontier Field is a great venue for the finish line, but having to climb those stairs after 4+ hours of running was almost impossible. I really think the finish shoot and post race nourishment should have been down on the field and not 2 flights of stairs up on the stadium concourse. Also it was a bit cool that day, those shiny plastic wraps/blankets would have helped keep runners warm while they get their snacks.
Overall I was very impressed. Compared to the Nissan Buffalo Marathon, I will absolutley stay home for this race again.
Cheers,
Jamey

Excellent potential but must work out the kinks
I ran this marathon as one member of a team relay. I loved it and I would love to see this marathon succeed year after year. It is a small race (almost 800 full marathon finishers) with sparse crowds, but it has the potential to become larger. The course was interesting and reasonably flat, with an awesome start and finish at Frontier Field in downtown Rochester. The volunteers, as always, were great, and the weather cooperated very nicely.
All that said, there were some first-year kinks to work out, especially with regards to the relay organization. The relay points need to be marked better out on the course. It was difficult at the first point to know where the 'handoff' was supposed to be and there was a lot of confusion and worry that maybe 2nd leg runners weren't at the right spot. Secondly, shuttle bus schedules and course map handouts with directions to drive to each relay point seemed to be totally nonexistent. Many relay teams were very confused. If two of our team members weren't Rochester natives, we would have had a very difficult time knowing what to do. And lastly, but most importantly - race results were not posted after the marathon! My team was in contention to win our category and we had to wait three hours, until the award ceremony(!!), which started half an hour late, to find out if we had won. Nobody seemed particularly interested or willing to help regarding the lack of posted race results. The person in charge later said runners had been stealing the result pages after they were taped to the wall. That seems a little odd, since we were checking the posting area very frequently, and never saw anything to suggest this was true. Besides, have you ever known runners to steal the posted results pages?
Despite these gripes, my experience was very positive. By next year I think they'll have worked out these problems. This could easily be one of New York's best marathons year after year, and I would encourage everyone to give it a shot.

dream comes true
Ontario shore was rather annoying, too boring and in the middle of no where. I was constantly praying to have in back to Rochester and finally it happened. For first time marathon it went pretty smooth. It needs a few polishing touches it promises to be perfect.
The course is spectacular however is not exactly fast, - there are some hills including constant incline on the last miles, the 26th however is downhill. Stadium finish is truly nice. I was counting on fans support and was not disappointed. Big thank you to all who came out the Saturday morning to give support and cheer us up. Looking forward to run it next year. Thank you, very nice race!

Good to see this back downtown
I ran this yesterday as my tenth marathon. It was great to see the Rochester Marathon return to downtown after a fifteen year hiatus. The marathon was very well-run. Nice course, great variety, and fairly flat. The crowds were a little thin in spots, but really great at many points along the course. Really good running along Park Ave past the restaurants late in the race -- fans were very supportive. Fun to finish inside Frontier Field.

NOT flat, GREAT support, GOOD Start
Flat-yeah right-maybe if you are comparing it to the Adirondacks! I trained flat cause the course was advertised to be flat. I won't make that mistake again. Yes again. Despite the misadvertisement, busted-up roads on the course under construction, narrow passages w/two-way running traffic for all 3 races (1/2, relay, and full marathons) and too many absent mile markers.. I would do this again. After all this was their first marathon in a while. The support was phenominal (Albany could use a lesson from you)! The cheerful audience and helpful, enthusiastic volunteers made it all worth while. I will come better prepared for your hilly course next year.

Excellent inaugural race
Even though I was a bit disappointed with my time, I thought this was an outstanding race. The course was great with a surprising number of spectators for a rainy morning in Rochester. Running through the city I live in was incredible. The finish was especially exciting, ending with a lap around Frontier Field with many people sitting in the stands cheering. The only negative was the confusion getting the timing chip. They really need to give this out with the packet to avoid having 1700 people waiting in line. Otherwise it was very well organized. I can't wait to run next year!
