Race Details

Over the years, one of my favorite times at our Running with the Devil extreme heat race in late June is when the sun sets, and the night air just beckons you to be outside and run! Devil After Dark brings you that magic with a late summer evening run.

Commencing just before sunset, run through Lovell Canyon while enjoying the stunning sunset as day falls into night. Sun is replaced by stars and moonlight lights the way. The omnipresence of the surrounding canyon under the moonlit starry night is magical! Pinion Juniper trees dance in the shadows and the neon lights of Las Vegas are just minutes away. An enchanted late summer evening run.

*This event is held on the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, under a special use permit.

Hot start, chilly finish

Devil After Dark is a unique marathon due to its location, course and timing. It is a small race with less than 50 runners. You start at the entrance to Lovell Canyon in the Spring Mountains, West of Las Vegas. The start is just before the sunset in a hot evening (~30C) followed by long run uphill with a single steep downhill section (about 1 mile long). You run on a pavement and after the sunset the race becomes a marathon of ghosts with headlamps and reflective clothes. The late evening part was rather chilly (~5C). Way beyond the half way turning point the 1-mile long hill became a steep mountain. From now on it was a long downhill run to the distant finish. Finish was rewarding: medal from the Race Director, hot meal, snacks and drinks. This is not the race to find your PR, just an unusual and beautiful event to remember. Final word: thanks to all volunteers who did an excellent job in the dark and chilly night.
