Race Details
This beautiful and challenging course follows a northern extension of the Finger Lakes Trail system along the eastern rim of the Letchworth gorge from Mt. Morris to Portageville. The trail is very runnable, well-marked and lovingly maintained, but by no means easy. Your meander through the wooded single-track along the rim will be punctuated by a seemingly interminable series of gullies, each entailing a rapid descent and a climb again to the rim. Many small stream crossings and ever-present roots will keep you on your toes. Pace yourself well. The course does not get easier as you near the finish. Prepare to test your endurance, prepare to have a blast, and prepare for an adventure!

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Running this marathon was one of the most incredible adventures I have ever had! The course was absolutely breathtaking! The terrain was brutal and totally exhausting.. I wiped out twice and had several near misses! It was extremely well organized and the volunteers/spectators were amazing in their support and enthusiasm!! This was the toughest but most gratifying run I will probably ever do!!! I would recommend it to anyone!!

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 2014 Sehgahunda Trail Marathon was run after a week of Flooding rains in the area. If I had know how bad the conditions would be, I might not have started the race. Deep mud over much of the course made footing dangerous - especially for the tail-enders like myself and my running buddy. The woods is beautiful as is the Letchworth gorge. There are no spectators except at the checkpoints - but that's what I like about trail running - the solitude. Without a doubt this was the most difficult run I have ever accomplished. A good deal of the time we could not run but had to slog through the deep mud and try not lose a shoe. There were a record number of dnf's this year they told us. I was not proud of my over 7 hour finish but I did finish without injury. And my wife actually waited at the finish - thanks El! My running bud who is ultra marathoner with a ton of trail experience said I could do any other race after accomplishing the 2014 Sehgahunda trail.

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 A wonderful venue! Add about an hour to a road marathon if you are used to trails. Organizers and volunteers do a good job and are really nice. Most courses the more aid stations the better. This one you wonder about that toward the end:) It was a great break in my long drive from PEI to Fort McMurry Alberta

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I have run this race 3 times now and each year has had its own challenges. From the deep mud in 2011, the heat in 2012, to the great weather that we had in 2013. Each year I expect this race to kick my butt and my expectations have always been met. Its such a fun day with great runners, great volunteers and a beautiful trail.

"Looking for a challenge?" (about: 2012)

| 1 Sehgahunda Trail Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This is an awesome trail marathon. There were several things that made the course tough. You cross over 100 'gullies'. What does that mean? Some of them you simply step over a small dry creek.(it was bone dry when I ran it) Others its an actual climb to the other side. As soon as I got some momentum going with a good pace Id hit another of these crossings. That being said the climbs to the aid stations also made this a difficult run. Almost every time you came to an aid station(8) it was a climb. A couple were pretty steep. Around mile 18-22 it got very difficult but if you can get past this point the finish is easier. You actually finish on old road/grassy trail. But just for a kick in the butt one last hill on pavement! The aid stations were well stocked and the volunteers were great. Not sure if I would have finished w/out their support.

""Gullies" is an understatement!" (about: 2010)

| 1 Sehgahunda Trail Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 The course runs point to point, following the Letchworth Branch of the Finger Lakes Trail on the east side of Letchworth State Park from Mount Morris, NY to Portageville, NY. Letchworth is referred to as the Grand Canyon of the East. For a first year event, it was extremely well organized by the Fleet Feet/ Salomon Endurance team, which is backed by Fleet Feet Rochester/ Yellowjacket Racing event company. Fleet Feet/ Yellowjacket racing (two companies owned by a husband and wife team) produce many events a year and know what should be done and how to put on races. The trail itself is mainly single track, with many ups and downs because of drainage gullies dropping off into the Letchworth gorge. The trail has many roots, rocks, stream crossings, and hills. The most mentally challenging part of the course comprised the out-and-back aid station checkpoints, the first of which was a little over 6 miles into the race. Water is required to be carried on course because of the this. Many parts of the trail are in remote areas so the organizers use the available access points for aid. The volunteers were great and helpful throughout. There also is a relay event that starts shortly after the marathon starts. I had a lot of fun and would recommend to anyone who enjoys a challenge. |
