"Great race with challenging weather" (about: 2014)
2 previous marathons
| 1 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I ran the 2014 edition, overall it's a beautiful race, as mentioned by others, 95% next to the blue Mediterranean sea. The winds and the rain made it more challenging. The only thing to improve is having more direction signs after the finish line for food location and to leave for the train station.

"A real Holiday/Marathon. Gorgeous but small issues" (about: 2013)

| 1 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This course is possibly the most beautiful marathon in the world ! It is 95% of the time next to the beach. The 2013 edition had 70km/h gusts, so some of the sand was blowing into our eyes after km 30, nevertheless it just made the experience more epic for me. We ran along turquoise blue waters, and in mostly upper middle class neighborhoods, so I couldn't help keeping an eye out for the fancy properties. The course is simply fantastic. Organization was overall quite good, but not perfect. My biggest gripe was at the end of the race, I was waiting in line for 10 minutes just to proceed to get a bottle of water, then another 10 minutes for bananas and oranges, then another 5 minutes for the medal (meanwhile all I wanted to do was just collapse and lie down on the floor after running my heart out, but I felt like a sheep in a pack). There are some spectators but not as much as I would have liked. The medal is a bit uninspiring. Overall, it was a great experience, would recommend it for a weekend getaway.

"It's very nice maratahon, but could be better" (about: 2013)
2 previous marathons
| 1 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 I ran 2013 edition. This marathon is very nice - route is really cool, but it's not as flat as official vertical drop shows. In 2013 we experienced extreme wind conditions - it's mostly beach route so you should take it into consideration. I don't like behind the scenes organization. Website is very dirty, expo is poor, but the biggest problem is that they don't publish official results in any clear form like PDF. You can't check your net time anywhere to compare with other runners. It's really annoying. But to pay honor: on-route support is excellent and marathon overall is really worth to run!

"Freak Weather Made 2013 A Brutal Experience" (about: 2013)
6-10 previous marathons
| 2 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Canness
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 My second time running this fantastic marathon and I applaud the organisers for continuing to set high standards to be proud of. Freak high winds made the latter 20 K brutal and challenging. Pine cones stripped from trees, peppered runners, sand in every orifice as it reach sand storm levels and I will never risk another race without at least carrying sunglasses. It took 15 hours for the last bit of sand to leave my eye. This Nice 2013 will be a marathon I will be pleased to have attended and proud that I beat the weather along with the everyone who refused to quit when it may have been a sane option at times.

"A Must Do Marathon" (about: 2012)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon and I could not have chosen better as it is such a beautiful city, an excellent Marathon with a superb route. The supporters are not evenly spread but the groups are enthusiastic and the locals are very friendly and helpful. The food is excellent. The goody bag was very generous and the price reasonable. I have booked a place later this year as I was so impressed.

"Predictably flat and safe course" (about: 2012)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 I was satisfied to have included this race on the back of a trip to Corsica. There was one tiny incline mid-race and the remainder of the course was flat making it an easy run. Course officials blocked traffic from using the roads, which was good. Inconveniently the train system was under repair so the bus shuttle arrangements for runners who paid EURO 5 in advance online or at expo were a little confusing for them to understand. Some people had paid online but didn't know to collect the shuttle admission sticker at the expo were almost not allowed to board the shuttles that morning. The volunteers should have informed clearly those runners how to obtain the shuttle stickers; I was a volunteer who didnt know to impart such information, but maybe next year we will know better how to inform fellow participants about such important details. Then the shuttle I was on for the return from Cannes to Nice required 90 minutes to travel from Cannes to Nice due to the driver's misunderstanding the traffic situation. Advice: This marathon is one-way, not round-trip, so please understand how you will return from Cannes to Nice (train-which was under repair in 2012, taxi-which would probably cost a fortune, bus, friend, or shuttle service provided by marathon organisation). The course PowerAde drink was sufficiently potent and not watered down, bring your own gels, post-race food is minimal, and the walk to the return bus shuttles seemed to take hours. 2012 race was not sunny which was good; if the 2013 race will feature Nice to Cannes and will be sunny then the runner will need to apply sunscreen to the left and back side of body because the sun exposure on that side will be continuous for three, four or five hours. I liked more the sister race, the 2012 Geneva UNICEF Marathon, because the course scenery was more visible and prettier (in my opinion), the Geneva spectators were much more lively throughout the event than in the Cote d'Azur townships and Geneva Marathon communication was in multiple languages (not exclusively French). But still I quite enjoyed the French Riviera Marathon.

"Great first Marathon" (about: 2012)
1 previous marathon
| 1 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This was my first Marathon (2012) and I was really happy with everything about it. Great organization, great route and good aid stations. Nothing to complain about except that it was not sunny during my three and a half hour run, but cant blame the organizers for that :-) Other real complaint I have is that much of the information sent out prior to the race via email is only supplied in French. English translations would be good.

"A Must-Do Marathon" (about: 2011)
11-50 previous marathons
| 1 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is one of the best organised and beautiful marathons I have ever ran. The organisation is top notch as well as the atmosphere on the day. As the previous reviewer said, we are lucky as the sea is on our left all the way from Nice to Cannes peppered with picturesque French Villages. If you just stop for a second at mile 14-15/ and look back towards Nice, you are greeted with a breathtaking view of the towns you past, the surrounding mountains, as well as some of the snow capped peaks of the Alps. Aid stations at regular intervals too, with plenty of water, sports drinks and food. Two things to note- you need to submit a medical cert from your GP about a month before the run, and, on the day itself, it can get a little congested around the 10-11 mile mark and at the finish. Brilliant Marathon!!!

"Great course. Perfect weather" (about: 2011)
6-10 previous marathons
| 1 Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Super marathon. 11000 runners along the coast d'azur. Good organisation. Plenty of water-stations. Few stations with energy drink. Plenty of bananas, chocolate, raisins. Start is on a big boulevard so no problem there for running your own pace. Nice is lovely for a weekend out! recommended! |
