The weekend of May 9-10, 2026 delivered a full slate of marathon action across North America – twelve events in all, drawing a combined field of approximately 1,229 finishers from the Atlantic provinces of Canada to the Texas Hill Country, from the Northwoods of Minnesota to the shores of Portland, Maine. The results ranged from a stunning dead-heat finish at a major Canadian marathon to a women’s winner who outran every man in her field to a women’s sub-3:16 that beat the second and third men across the line. There was no quiet weekend in May.
THE WEEKEND’S HEADLINE STORIES
A Tie for the Ages: Louis April and Jean-Marc Doiron Cross Together at Fredericton
The most remarkable finish of the weekend didn’t belong to a single runner – it belonged to two. At the Stewart McKelvey Fredericton Marathon in New Brunswick, Louis April and Jean-Marc Doiron crossed the finish line in exactly 02:31:40, sharing first place to the second. In a sport where chip timing is precise to thousandths of a second, a genuine tie at this level of performance – both men under 2:32 on a full 26.2-mile course – is vanishingly rare. Whether they ran the final miles together by design or pure coincidence, the result is one for the record books. Sarah Mulcahy won the women’s race in a commanding 3:03:08.
Lake Wobegon’s Competitive Fire: A Three-Way Men’s Battle in 2:38
At the Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon in St. Joseph, Minnesota, the men’s race was decided by barely two minutes across three finishers – Alan Twomey (2:38:11), Ben Johnson (2:38:23), and Cody Anderson (2:40:13). Erin Francsis added to the drama by winning the women’s race in 2:58:15, the fastest women’s winning time of the entire weekend across any event.
Women Outrunning the Field: Watkins at Starved Rock, Bopp at Pine Tree
Two of the weekend’s most eye-catching results came from women who didn’t just win their gender division – they beat multiple men. At Starved Rock Country Marathon in Ottawa, Illinois, Sydney Watkins ran 3:16:58 – faster than both the second-place (3:19:31) and third-place men (3:20:01). In Portland, Maine, Katherine Bopp’s 3:15:31 at the Pine Tree Marathon bettered second-place Jay Lackey (3:20:57) and every other man except winner Mike Kutcher (3:14:37).
RACE-BY-RACE RESULTS
Stewart McKelvey Fredericton Marathon – Fredericton, NB, Canada
The flagship event of the weekend by field size, the Stewart McKelvey Fredericton Marathon drew 465 finishers to the capital of New Brunswick for what proved to be one of the most memorable finishes in the race’s history. Louis April and Jean-Marc Doiron tied for first in exactly 02:31:40 – a genuine dead heat where fractions of a second typically separate competitors at this pace. Third place went to Yannick Dupuis in 2:40:36, nearly nine minutes back. Sarah Mulcahy ran a strong 3:03:08 to win the women’s race, followed by Sacha Hourihan (3:06:47) and Danielle Keefe (3:07:26) in a tight women’s podium separated by just four minutes. The field average of 3:55:47 – the fastest of the weekend – reflects a highly competitive and experienced field.
Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon – St. Joseph, MN
The second-largest event of the weekend, the Lake Wobegon Trail Marathon winds through the wooded terrain of central Minnesota. Alan Twomey won in 2:38:11, edging Ben Johnson (2:38:23) and Cody Anderson (2:40:13) in one of the most compact men’s podiums of the entire weekend.
