The London Marathon is the richest marathon in the world and is arguably more committed to its elite field than any other marathon in the country. Of course when the long-time race director is a past world record holder at 10,000m, it makes sense that he cares about the elite field and enjoys the prospect of trying to set new records at his own event. Admittedly the race director we refer to, David Bedford, has stepped down from his leadership role in the marathon as of 2012/2013, that spirit remains.

Post-Race Writeups The Men’s Race: For the second year in a row, the men’s field went out well ahead of world record pace – but for the second year in a row it was not to be. Eight men ran through the half marathon in 1:01:34; and four men were still on WR pace as they passed mile 30K in 1:27:49. But the men could barely hold on and ran 1:04:30 for the second half. After being outkicked for third spot in 2012 and being passed over for an Olympics berth; Tsegaye Kebede did the kicking and busted into the lead ahead of a slowing Emmanuel Mutai. Kebede wins, Mutai runner-up and Ayele Abshero is third. Read the full story:  The Men’s Race The Women’s Race: Tiki Gelana, the Olympic Gold Medalist and fastest woman in the field suffered a collision with a wheelchair and ultimately slowed to barely finish – had she not collided…who knows… Instead, after a slow first half, Priscah Jeptoo, the Olympic Silver Medalist and 2012 London Marathon third finisher, pushed the pace and ran away from the field to easily win in 2:20:15. Edna Kiplagat was second in 2:21:32 and Yukiko Akaba took third place in 2:24:43.
